I work outside on the Ramp at the airport. Today was one of the worst days in a LONG time. I usually get by with just pants, long sleeve t-shirt, and my medium weight uniform jacket. ( I'd rather be cold then sweat ) It snowed about 3" last night, and it was super cold this morning, so I put on under armor under the pants, and added a hooded sweatshirt to the top layer. Good thing - cuz DAMM it was COLD! Wind blew about 20 all day and temp was in the teens. The high here Monday is supposed to be like 3. Glad I'm off work for that one.....;)

sorry so many of you are freezing. today was at least 82 and sunny in Homestead, Florida. I wish it would get a little cool down here. I took my z to get it aligned. Damn car runs great. then I got my porter cable polisher with adams polishes and waxes and took out all the micro scratches that show up so vividly in black cars. Down here I tend not to drive it in the summer because of the heat. This is the best time of the year down here and I have noticed all hotels are full in south beach and everywhere else. OH!...oh....Pete...that is SO wrong it hurts my imagination "eyes":p
Just on a hunch, I thought I might check the antifreeze on the Z and Ami's C3. The Z was OK, but Ami's C3 tested good to only zero F. After removing enough antifreeze to add a gallon of straight antifreeze and re-testing, it was still "zero". Hmmmm???
More draining, another gallon and another test = NO CHANGE. Double HMMMMM & add a hearty WTF???
Turns out the chamber in the hydrometer (tester) has to be filled completely to read accurately. The bulb on my old hydrometer was sorta stiff with cold, and wasn't pliable enough to pull a full charge of fluid into the test chamber; hence the repeated "zero" reading, in spite of adding antifreeze.
The repeated "zero" reading made me suspicious, and after allowing the coolant to circulate (love the sound of a cammed SBC w/ side pipes) and after warming the hydrometer bulb with my heat gun, the test chamber filled completely. -34ºF is (according to the instructions on the meter) a 50/50 mix, and the the meter was pegged somewhere below -34ºF. The heater I bought and the thermal controller...will find another use, somewhere, (e.g. the snow blower?).

Same here Brett. 2-1/2 to 3 feet drifts, as barbed wire doan werk fer chit to stop the wind and drifting.
Driveway over 100 yards long. New record for distance: the snow blower sent a stream of snow 55 feet - looked like a crystalline rainbow. (I wonder if I put a turbo on it if I could break 100 feet?? What do you think Ron??)
But, my biggest concern was the water pipes freezing (crawl space). We don't see -45º wind chill this "far" south. So, my biggest worry wasn't the snow, but the wind chill. Got a chance to try out my "arctic suit" tho. -45º wind chill and I was "sweating like a HO in church" after snow blowing - (suit worked as advertised...but I couldn't put my arms down!) JK:)
NOW...if it would warm up just a little, maybe I can get some work done to be ready for spring driving season???

GC,
The last work I did on the car interior was to finish things up prior to New Year. Have spent as little time in the garage as possible this week. We had temps down to an actual -17F w windchill of -47F. We expect it to get into the +30s tomorrow and this weekend. So I have spent this time in the basement and disassembled the seats. Removed the seat covers, one for sale and the other to be used as a template for an upholsterer to make new covers matching the cognac interior. I've decided to have the seat back shells painted to match the other plastic of the interior. This will also help minimize the amount of black. As for scuffing the back, I thought I could put on something like ClearBra to protect that.
With the weather getting into the 30s this week, I may start on the rear Z06 brake install.
Should have everything to finish up the interior, other than the seat covers, sometime next week.

Dom, don't you have a heated garage yet? I blew some insulation in the ceiling and sides of mine and installed an electric heater hanging from the ceiling. The heater and 220 line cost about $600. I keep it at about 50 degrees most of the winter but if I want to work I can run it up to 60 or more temporarily. Here is a picture-- you can see it in the back corner. Very happy with the results. It doesn't seem to adversely affect my electric bills materially. -- Bob

My ramps on my Direct Lift drop downward when the lift is raised and then clear the garage door. When the lift is lowered, they extend outside the doorway. Luckily, I can drive a ZR-1 underneath the hanging ramps buy about three-four inches and still have one ZR-1 on top in storage. I just have to remember to turn OFF the radio so the antenna doesn't get bent.

Hi Brett- The garage was super clean when I installed the lift and took the picture. With our weather lately it is now a mess! I don't use the original steel ramps--they weigh too much and in my situation I have to put them on and off regularly. I got some Race Ramps which are only about 15 pounds. They work great. Also, I have replaced a couple of antennas and am contemplating installation of an antenna switch which some have done. Sorry I don't have a better picture handy, but in the one below you can barely make out at the bottom a sign I have posted on the lift in block letters: "LOWER ANTENNA". -- Bob

You know that isn't as bad as I was thinking..
And I went and measured and my ceiling in the garage is 10'3". I was thinking 9' because that's what my interior ceilings are... It is something to think about - I could put the Z up top and back my dd Civic in under it. That would actually give me room in my 3 car garage for an actual work space.
And I got one of these: http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll?parta~dyndetail~Z5Z5Z50000050f~Z5Z5Z59039~P 19.95~~~~S3Z111IS5Q24207217881b~Z5Z5Z5~Z5Z5Z500000 50F~~~ for my antenna. Haven't hooked it up yet - it's in the boxes o parts for when it warms up... Might help you guys with the lifts?

Yours is a 2.5car garage? What did the insulation cost you? I know I don't have any in my garage attic. Blowing it into the sidewalls would help rest of the house too. I do have a pair of insulated coveralls however. A bit cheaper.

Just some more info...I have a 9'3" ceiling height and have a 64 Chevelle Malibu SS vert on top of my Z with about 5" of room left. I was surprised how well it all worked out. 1 thing I did do was get a Liftmaster jack shaft garage door lift and eliminated the center ceiling GD opener. Also extended the door tracks so the door is 2"s from the ceiling for more room.:)

You guys have great garages and awesome lifts. I took my Z to Islamorada in the Florida Keys which is about 40 minutes from my house. It was a hot and sunny day and I went on the 7 mile bridge which has been totally repaired. It does offer passing lanes and of course you know what that means.. passing tons of cars at 130 mph ... oh yeah!! car runs great.. a little cold down here would be nice.. we dont have seasons here... just one long summer. It has its positives and negatives.... like everything else. I have a one car garage so not much I can do with that. I dont want to buy a bigger house because it costs me peanuts to live. I bought a foreclosure and paid 1/4 of the cost so its stress free but.... i dont have a 2 car garage for the first time in my life... oh well...

-- Bob

Wife wants to know how many times you have hit your head when getting out of your DD you park under the lift?

Hi Dom--
The insulation cost $900 as I recall and I am not certain that was the best price available. You might be able to rent a blower from home depot and do it yourself for less. I seriously doubt that the walls were actually filled up, but not worrying about it, as the ceiling was well covered.
My garage is 21'x21' with an 18' wide door. The door width helps a lot, as does the 21' overall width. Gets the lift post right at the edge of the door opening with a couple of feet of space to the wall. One thing I had to do was get a 90 degree bracket for the motor/pump mount which mounts it between the posts rather than sticking out towards the wall. There are a number of pictures and comments on the installation in my albums section. --Bob

I don't hit my head at all getting in and out but I have been doing it for a year and a half now so I am used to getting in and out a certain way. But I had a few reminders early on. :o The DD is wide enough that there is only a little ramp sticking out beyond the side of the car. It is a bigger problem if I bring home a narrower MINI Cooper from work and don't pay attention. Also when taking groceries out of the passenger door I need to pay more attention--hit a couple of times. And if I have passengers I usually remind them to watch their heads. But overall quite liveable and my wife has parked her 335xi under it from time to time without incident --Bob

Hi Franke--
I did the same with the Liftmaster 3800 and raised the tracks as well. Lots of pics of my setup in my albums--click on my avatar. Looks a lot like yours.--Bob

Good pics Bob. My GD opener is identical to yours. Did you get the backup battery option in your Liftmaster?
