Tires on my recent purchase are 9-10 years old about 1/2 tread left. Not using car on Drag strip just Summer weather cruising around town. Will need to replace soon. Can I get some recommendations? I see prices all over the map.

Jeff,
Are your tires P275/40ZR17 and P-315/35ZR17? If so the Michelin site say they are not available any more.

Actually they are 18s
Do they have PS2?
If not I think Nitto still has the 555 which also is a nice tire I had those on my 89

If PS2's and Nittos are better than Vredisteins ultrac then prove it. Because Vreds have blown all those tire rack possers away and only cost $845 shipped. Y rated for 186mph and 280 AA/A which is the highest traction you can get. I get tired of hearing the plugs for Nittos and Sport pilots without any mention of the tire that is their fiercest competition for far less. The price on them has been going up steadily since their introduction and won't be cheap forever but they are more than worth mentioning while they are half the price of the tire rack darlings.

I have never used Vredisteins, So I could not comment on those.. I commented on what I have used in the past and current
I paid around $900 for the Nittos.. but that was back in 2004 I think
I paid $500 for my Michelin Pilot Sports (they had less then 3K miles on them)
My pilot sports are 275/35 and 335/30 both 18s, yes I got a killer deal

i'll be happy to try them out next year if someone wants to send me a set of 4Well Kevin you know I'm not a new comer to this site. And I've had many different tires on the Z. So If I say they are very impressive tires you should probably pay attention. Sorry but you will have to foot the bill for them yourself. I don't plug for them for the way they look. It's for the way they handle and grip. Also for the way they perform at top speed with our cars most of which don't even reach the speeds these tires are made for anyway. PS2's and Nittos are top tires. But so are Vreds. So if getting the most for your money matters to you then I highly suggest them. I've personally tested them and put my life in their hands more than once and made it home for dinner. I don't spend twice as much on a tire of the same performance just because 5 dudes with ZR-1's I know have them. Especially when those 5 dudes have never even taken their precious ZR-1's above 110mph or drifted in them with complete control. I'm just saying. It's your decision. I'm just giving you more options.

I was looking for the Vreds because they looked like a great bargain. Unfortunately, at the time, they didn't make any sizes to fit my 18/19" Z06 wheels. Can't comment on them. I do find the Invos to be very good in both wet and dry, and even tho they're not DRs, they do a nice job on the drag strip.

I also ran a set of Vredisteins for a few years very good ride & handling, well balanced tire two took less than 1/2oz weights. The only down side is they are not as wide as say GS-3s by about an inch. I still have mine just took them off this year with 15k miles on them still have 50% tread left.
The only reason I took them off was I got a great deal on some GS-3s. If I can find a set of wheels I will use them for winter driving. Here is a rear view of both.

8. Tires (some helpful hints from Marc Haibeck)
a. There are four or more brands available for the ZR-1. Sumitomo, Kumho, Nitto, Vredestein, etc.
b. Sumitomo's may flat spot when cold because there is one nylon cord. They will thump for about the first five miles when cold.
c. Kumho's racing tires are excellent.
d. The Nitto NT 555 provides 95% of the performance of the Goodyear D3 at about 60% of the price. The soft thread on the NT 555R wears out in about 20k miles.
e. The Tire Rack does not sell Nitto. Discount Tire has them Discount Tire (http://www.discounttire.com).
f. AFS Wheels sells Vredestein tires Vredestein (http://shop.afswheels.com/VREDESTEIN...A-TIRES_c5.htm). AFS Wheels are the same as "Cleanin-out-the-garage" on Ebay. I noticed that about the sizing, too. I'm running Invos on another vehicle and like them so that's the way I'll go. Would like to run 285/30/18 fronts and 335/30/18 rears,if possible.
Might even buy Ron's 19" CCW's and go that route.

I have the Z06 sizes on my wheels. Altho the Z06 guys will run a 345 on the rear and stock is a 325. As it is, I get a slight rub on the inner wheel well on the passenger rear wheel. It only happens on a severe, abrupt dip but I can smell rubber and can see the rub mark. Not so on the driver's side. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the C4 rear ends were not symmetrical. Passenger side rear is tucked in just a bit more than driver's. Guess I could go w a slightly thicker spacer for the passenger side.

I've gone the cheap tire route in the past and i almost ended up selling a car because of it, not something I'm going to do again. I'm leery of running nittos but not sure I can come up with the money to buy the GSD3's or PS2's that I really want to run on the car. Now I'm reading that they're nearly an inch smaller then the gsd3's and that's just not something i'm willing to have on my car

If I have the extra funds when it comes to replacing the tires,Michelins will always be my first choice. However,I sure won't have a problem with Nittos,I don't think.
Is Bridgestone or Dunlop still offering a 315 or wider rear tire?

I really haven't worried about tires for a while because back in the 00s I ordered two sets of F1 Supercars while GY still made them in 315. I have the last set on the car but they'll last for awhile
But, my, how times have changed. None of the major tire companies offer a good ultraperformance radial in 315.
Looks like there are still good choices in 275/40ZR17s and 335/35ZR17s. Just curious...how tall is the 335/35 and what's the recommended rim width for it?

Michelins my choice by far. It is true Michelins no longer make 315's so I bought 335's. No body issues for me. They are slightly wider and minutely taller. I measured against my 315 I took off and looked to be about 3/8 in h taller. Speedometer

Recommended rim width for a 335/35/17 is 12"-13" but they seem to work fine on a 17x11". Diameter is right at 26" tall compared to 25.7" for a 315/35/17.

There is a set of Nitto 555's on mine. And they are junk. Literally. Only have 1/32" worn off the tread, and tires are 2011 mfr - but the sidewalls failed the "Road Force Balance" machine at my local Chevy dealer. Can't get Nitto to warranty them (long story in another thread here somewhere), and they won't balance. So if I have the $ this spring I will have to put something on mine so I can drive it over 60mph without shaking my fillings out. Probably look hard at those vred whatevers...;)

this right here is reason enough for me not to get themGee I wonder what reason that would be? The Vreds are exactly 12 1/2 inches wide. That 3/4 overhang on each side of the 11" wide rim. I highly doubt that GS-3's are an inch wider than that. I'm going to put my machinist hat on. Lets do the math. 315/25.4mm=12.401 wide
335/25.4mm=13.188wide
Now I highly doubt that a Dunlap GS-3 made for an 11" wide rim measures 13.5 wide. That would make it wider than a 335 tire. I think it's more of an optical illusion than anything. But that's ok I get it if some people don't like the looks of them. It's a preference purely on cosmetics and zero on performance. I have a good ZR-1 friend on this forum that doesn't care for the Vreds either only because he thinks the tread is just so strange looking compared to his Nitto 555's or whatever they are. So while we were sipping some beers in his garage and looking at each others tires I just said hey man! I don't care if the tire tread is in the shape of a chicks boobs. If they perform with the best tires available and the tests prove that then it's good enough for me. The first set I bought I completely destroyed them in one year. Not to mention I needed a complete suspension rebuild which I completed.http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn63/keeno1970/rearsuspen010.jpg

The DSG -3 have always had a sharper more square corner which gives the illusion that they are wider that's all. Both great tires. I've had them both. Just comes down to tread pattern for some. The first set I paid $745 a set shipped. The second set I paid $845 shipped. Now I see they are heading north of $947 a set. And this is from the same seller. But I had the car at Marc's in September - shook like crazy going up and shook the same coming back after he worked his magic on the LT5. The TIRES FAILED the "Road Force Balance" the Chevy dealer did on them due to "bad sidewalls". I have checked and re-checked other parts of the car that could cause vibration and found nothing. So I have no reason to believe that anything is wrong other then the tires. And the kicker was the whole runaround that I and my local tire dealer here got from the tech guy at Nitto - was going to warranty them so dealer ordered the tires and had 2 of em on the car - then reneged and said they wouldn't warranty them. SO from my experience I have no faith in Nitto - and I have a set of tires that won't balance and I'm stuck until I can come up with a grand to buy new ones...

OK.......I am assuming (maybe incorrectly) you bought the car that way (poor tire balance).
I just went through trying to balance front tires after moving wheel weights around to clear C5 Z06 brakes on a 90'. It was NOT easy but finally got job done (not Nittos). It took a lot of wheel weights on the inside and finally outside of A-Molds.
It would be interesting to have someone near by with a Z switch tires with you and isolate which wheel/tire is the culprit or otherwise isolate the issue.
I do know that running a Z with wheel imbalance is NO fun especially on curves/cornering where it shows up the most. The width of the front wheels makes tire balancing even more difficult on a Z. And.....most difficult when you want ALL wheel weights hidden.
Let us know the outcome in your previous thread regarding your specific issue.

I had a similar situation with Sumitomos. They were on the car when I bought it but I had had them before so I was fine with them for everyday driving. However, when I went to BG last spring I experienced a noticable shimmy. When I was there Jim Van Dorn kindly offered to balance them and tried but really didn't have the right weights or balancer. So I stopped at a shop in BG which had a Road Force Balancer. He had to rotate a couple of tires on the rims and finally said one tire was "Out of Spec", meaning it couldn't be balanced completely, like your tires. But the work they did improved it substantially so I am OK with it for now. Still detect a bit of shimmy but nowhere near what I had previously. I will be looking at tires this spring also. --Bob

I learned about 30 days ago from the Marketing Manager at GY that they will not be producing GS-D3s again until at least late-summer/early-fall...IF they do decide to produce them. This info cemented my decision to go with Toyo Proxes R888s and I am thrilled with that decision. Hopefully this helps.

vredestin Sessanta tires are the best deal period. they have great handling characteristics and are quiet and great in wet weather. Even though they keep on getting more expensive they are my choice for a new set of tires. I have bought several sets for my corvettes and the have all been great.

Bought a pair of Nitto NT555`s for the rear in May and i`ll be mighty glad when they wear out. The worn out Goodyear GSC`s handled much better. Too much sway in the rear when turning the steering wheel from left to right. Running 35 lbs. pressure. I`m thinking that the sidewall strength is the difference??? Thought i`d go "CHEAP" and i got what i paid for.

Just before Bowling Green I bought a set of Michelin Pilot Sports from Costco. Stock fronts and 335 rears, since that is all Michelin makes. The rears definitely look wider than my previous tires. They ran fine down and back, seem properly balanced and provide much more grip than the old Sumitomos. Unfortunately Marc H drove WARP TEN at the BG drags and wore off about $400 worth of new rubber doing a burnout!. Also ran 12.4/116 without power shifting. Overall the new tires feel much better in terms of both traction and handling. --Bob

Thanks for all of the insight and knowledge you have shared with me regarding tires. Not sure what direction I am going to go, but appreciate the many options you have shared. When I make a decision, I will let you know. Again, thanks!

I wasn't happy with the Nitto 555s either. There was a brand new set with about 50 miles on them when I bought the car, but the car had sat long enough to flat spot them. They never fully rounded back out and were rock hard. When I put on the nearly new (about 100-200 miles) set of Goodyear F1's I got from USAZR1, I couldn't believe the difference. Handling, traction, ride quality, road noise, etc were all incredibly better on the F1s. Even my Corvette guy buddy who was there when I swapped the set on said he wouldn't have believed the difference if he didn't experience it himself.
The Nittos are out there and available, but I wouldn't ever buy a set. I had a set of Summitomos and they were pure garbage. They use a similar size tread piece for many different width tires, so the 315 tread patch isn't much wider than the 275. If you search the internet, you'll find all kinds of comparisons. They were cheap when I bought them (for an '88 383 street/strip Vette), but I was so disgusted with them, that they were off long before they were worn out and that was when I was on Army lower enlisted pay.....
It's too bad there aren't many tires to choose from these days in our sizes.

Same here with the 555's. Had new ones on the car when I got it. Car had sat for awhile. Flat spotted, failed 2 road force balances. Got new ones due to they were the cheapest - still not totally thrilled...

I'd like to hear if anyone has had experience w the Ultratrac Sessanta by Vredestein. Unfortunately they didn't make 19's when I was looking. It's been three years and I am pretty satisfied w the Nitto Invos I have.

Since this thread is back up, I noticed a TireRack special on the Kuhmo Ecsta XS, with 315s in stock at $250/ea - but the fronts are backordered at $189/ea (usually means there's a container on it's way somewhere, call/chat and ask).
Although I haven't run these myself I did an awful lot with their precursor, the MX. My wife tried them on her autocross 88 z51 but preferred the Toyo R1R (no rears available for us). Would not hesitate to run the XS as an excellent street tire.
Cheers,
- Jeff

Kumho Ecsta XS
I like mine! Tire Rack reviews rate them highly.
Can't understand why more Zs don't run them?
3 seasons on them and they're wearing well and still hookup.
Neat tread pattern too.

I have had them on my c5 supercharged corvette and now my zr1. They are great tires. Very good in the rain, great side lateral handling, quiet and reasonably priced. These Dutch tires are the best at there price point. In fact, I would take them over almost all other brands except for michelin which are way more expensive. Everybody that has had a set has loved them. They have a really unusual tread pattern that make people inquire all the time about these tires. I highly recommend them. I bought my sets on the internet only.

I have the Vredesteins under my Z, I like them.
Michellin Pilot sport tyres I prefer the most but they where not available here any longer in Holland.(17")
The price was 600€ for two rear tyres including balance and re- alligment of the car.

Because you can't get them. The fronts are on indefinite backorder...exactly the same situation as the GS-D3.

BTW, I've heard nice things about the Vredesteins' ride quality, etc. In fact, I've actually heard some guys likening their smooth, serene ride to that of the Michelins. But the problem is that they are narrow, no different than Nittos and Sumis. I don't drive my car on a track, so the Sumis were fine, other than the fact that they looked like bicycle tires.
If you want a good tire, then there are several choices. If you want a WIDE, good tire, then it's Michelin or Toyo...at least until Goodyear gets off its azz and decides it wants our money again. It's all about your priorities; mine was to make my car look like a ZR-1, as opposed to a base Corvette.
If I was to find out tomorrow that Toyo was discontinuing the R888 in our sizes, I'd probably buy 2 sets.

I was at Parts Arama in at Butler Fairgrounds on Friday looking for and checking out tires. Our task is not getting any easier. Various suppliers tell you they can get them and then comeback with the backorder stuff.
Kevin I did receive your pm but couldn't get a response back to you through pm system. Not sure what problem is. If you get back to Hubbard try again. Thanks

There were Khumo's on my LT4 CE when I got it. I had no complaints about them at all. Good all around tires.

Yep, no such thing as Toyo R888s in our sizes. And I've heard they suck azz anyway. Don't bother with them.
