Curious to know how y'all drive your Zs. I assumed all Z drivers hammered then on a regular basis. Apparently NOT.

So, lets take a poll, just for fun!;)

I'm not a warrior, but I don't consider myself a waxer either. I purchased it for the historical piece that it is, The REL1C. :handshak:

I voted # 1 because I don't race on any street, however it does see 6000 on occasion just to keep things working. I almost never slam through the gears.... just love driving it. I owned a 68, AC 427 mint condition roadster for a number of years, also a 69, 427-400 also in mint conditon, but my Z drives so much better and no corvette tops its historical heritage!!! none. Just need to find an excuse to drive it more.

I like waxing it. dont race much any more but I can be provoked. I have a drag racing history and license but those days are gone. dont enjoy the breakage with that sport so I just enjoy the ride.. but if some punk makes a manuever and yanks my chain, I become John Force in no time. Even my Zr1 is not as fast as my C5 I am selling, I enjoy the car more. That is why I am keeping it. It has good mods and runs very well just not as fast as my C5. 400 rwhp to the wheels compared to 525 rwhp?? no comparison. I will keep my z forever or until I sell, which are not in the plans. If I do sell, it will be my last Corvette. At least I will end with a bang!:-D

This poll is an either or poll which just doesn't work for me because I'm both. I'm a warrior that likes to rip but I also am anal about keeping it clean. So I guess I am a waxer warrior. Your never going to see a speed like this with your ZR-1 in the 1/4 mile anyway unless you had the balls to push it like I have.

I have yet to see fewer than a hand full that have done much beyond the 1/4 mile. Just saying.

I voted for the second option from the top.

There seems to be some negative connotations from the warrior crowd about waxers. Why?

I am a waxer... and proud of it. I love automotive art on wheels. I've been known to sweat the details. I do love a car that looks nice. (Although....I will say, I think it is a little nutz about some of those Zaino types that have put 10 coats of something on their car) -but, its their car! If that's how they derive enjoyment from ownership, then more power to them. I respect that.

I would like to think a person can be both...a waxer and a warrior. I am fortunate enough to have two Z's, (and caretaker of a third). Every time the Z's get driven, the power key is "ON". And everytime they are, I consider it a duty :-D, to excercise the secondaries...maybe not everytime to 6500+, but as others stated, our cars tend to run better when they are excercised frequently into secondary territory.

Just a sidenote to those that don't "wind up" their cars for fear of abusing them...Even when comparing the LT5 to the newer Vettes with higher HP ratings, I think the LT5 is far closer to an out and out "race motor". Especially as durability is concerned.

While most so called factory "performance" motors have been built to handle durabilty quite well from stressing them, prolonged and repeated abuse tends to take a toll on their longevity.

IMHO, not so much with the LT5. No, I don't beat my LT5's like dogs...I respect them too much and have too much waxer in me. But the reality is, these motors crave rpm's and cars whose motors are excercised periodically, tend to run better.

I have read on these forums over the years about guys who have over 100,000 miles (+) on their ZR-1's and in their totally stock configurations are putting out more horsepower and running better than at a tenth of their original mileage!

So, don't be afraid to "let 'er buck"! :iroc:

Waxers are beautiful people and want to preserve their gem and keep it in the best possible shape for future investment purposes. What's not to like about that? I'm just a test the limits guy. I've done that with everything fast thing I've ever had. From Rice rockets to cars. I'f I had Franks LPE 441 I would have already topped that mofo out to the limit on some road and made a vid of me doing it. Why? Because I'm freaking nuts that's all lol!:p

Not to sidetrack this thread, but I just remembered a story I have to share. I remember years ago, some crazy cockamamie story I heard (maybe on here) about legendary Corvette endurance racer Tommy Morrison. Not remembering all the details, but it went something like this... during one of their races, one of their modified LT5's had some sort of failure...(at least of something that wasn't going to allow them to finish the race with that motor).

Well, one of the members of Tommy's crew had a ZR-1 that he drove to the race. The story goes that they quickly pulled the motor from the street driven car, put it in the race car and finished the race. When done, they put the motor back in the street ZR-1, and the owner happily drove home.

---

Well. I was at the 2010 Gathering and got to spend some cool quality time hanging out and talking to Tommy Morrison (and Yvette!). I can't remember all the details, but yep, Tommy confirmed it and got a big smile on his face when talking about it!

yeah, waxer warrior. that is a good combination. I would not like to beat the snot out of my zr1 just for kicks every time. I have yet to bring it to 6k rpm. I did find it lacking low end torque when I first drove it. I needed to learn to bring up the rpms which is where the power it. I love driving it. I feel that I am driving something special. It does have more of a race car feel even with less power. when it climbs up in rpm it just wants to take off kaboom! Great fun and love the smooth 6 speed. I just bought hub centric spacers for my deep dish amolds so I expect a mean look out the back. I didint realize that nobody made deep dish amolds in our 36mm offset. that was verified by the distributors that make all the aftermarket oem rims. I will try to post a pic once the spacers are installed. I am slowly getting my car in show car shape. I had some imperfect leather restitched and the trim shop.. looks excellent. I need to clean under the car, retorque some bolts etc... and change oil.. got the 10w40 mobil extended miles oil with the heavy zinc inside. I noticed that when I put a heavier grade synthetic the smoke from the lack of the exhaust valve seals went away. no smoke at all. One of our members suggested it also living in south florida and the heat I need some viscosity in my oil. so far so good. Waxer Warrior is my proper definition for a guy like me.

7000rpm soothes the soul. If you drive a normal car and feel how it just poops out by 6k and you realize there's no point in revs, you might think that's how engines work.

But then you drive an engine that's made to rev, that pulls harder and harder the higher you go, that feels like it wants to spin to the moon.... :D You guys who haven't pushed it yet, try it. Just once. I guarantee it won't be the last.

Well, I'll fess up to the slant toward Warrior at the expense of Waxers. NO ill will intended, and in true hypocritical form, when at WOT and 7200+, I'm doin' it it in a Z with so many coats of Zaino that I've lost count!:p

I admit, I'm both WAXER N WARRIOR. I mean really...What better way to experience the ZR-1 than a 5-2 @ 50 and hammer it to blow the smirk off the faces of the would be bad azzes, AND look GOOD while doing it??

Mine usually gets a little exercise every time she's out of the garage. She's gone to the drags and the road course at Summit Point a few times. One great pleasure was passing a friend's turbo Porsche on the 2900 foot straightaway. I didn't have the skill to maintain the lead through the curves, but I sure gave him hell. By the way, I think she'd be even faster if I reduced her weight by not waxing her so often.

Paul I think a nicely waxed and polished Z is a little faster.
Funny waxer story. I remember years ago I woke up at 5:30am to clean and wax my Z. And and polish the interior to go to the Hooters corvette show here in town. I spent hours on that car. So I take off to head to the show to put it on display and as I'm sitting at the stop light I look up through the clear roof and above me sitting on the telephone line is a big black bird. So he decides to crap and I'm watching in slow motion as its heading right at the top of my car and I'm say ing Noooooooooo! But when it hit my roof I had waxed it so good it was like non stick coating and that big turd hit like a sunny side up fried egg and just bounced off on to the street surface and didn't leave so much as a poop drop anywhere. I just laughed. It was just to cool.

I don't think I have ever waxed my car since I got it in summer 2012. Just wash and the finish seems fine. I do plan to have a couple of small stone chips touched up than have it detailed this spring sometime. I run it strongly at least once every day when I am driving (nice weather) but usually shift at 6,500-6,800 rpm unless I am actually racing (1/4 mile, half mile), then I run to about 7,000. But I don't think I have ever hit my rev limiter. So I guess I am a warrior carrying a relatively small spear. --Bob

is not out of question.Second gear would be about 7400 and every other gear
would be the same. The absolute Rush and adrenalin I get from it is A natural

BINGO! I believe you're 100% correct! The un-initiated expect the LT5 to behave like a push rod motor, and almost expect stuff to start flying apart when the sound approaches that well worn 6k point learned in decades of driving.

A great friend of mine (just retired from 25 years as a deputy Sheriff in Cook Co) wanted to drive my Z, so I tossed him the keys. He "hammered" it up to only about 5800 rpm before shifting, and remarked afterward how it was about like someone's Mustang. I said, "Uh, huh.." We switched places.

Cruising up in first to about 4k rpm, a power shift to 2nd and a couple quick gears to the 7100 shift light, and a wide eyed passenger came away with a whole new perspective on what a healthy DOHC race motor is all about!:dancing

Frankly, it was the same reaction I had the first time I ran the quarter in (my then stock) Z. I'd never tracked it before, and was simply amazed at what a huge surprise there was lurking under the hood of the ZR-1! I remember releasing the clutch at about 2500 rpm and the hood suddenly covering the bottom 1/3 of my view of the track...through ever gear! Best of all, there was a C5 that got the jump on me, but at the top of every gear, the Z took a big bite as the C5 shifted to the next higher gear. The thrill of the Z reeling him in at the 1/8th and stuffing him at the finish...set me on the Warrior path forever!:dancing

shift light blinks at 7400 every time I'm warmed up and have the chance

car peaks at 7100, 508 at the tire, but is still at 505 at 7400 so it's a "table top" not nosing over up top

definitely NOT a waxer, dave bright scolded me a few times as I barely keep it clean much less wax it.

too busy DRIVING it. but I really do respect folks that are meticulous and keep their cars so nice.

I'm going to try and go from uber warrior to a street sweaper who keeps it clean!

getting a bunch of new nicks and chips up front, but they are a "badge of honor"

the LSV has 82k and I hope to hit the centennial mark soon and earn a high mile stroker badge.

like to the turbo the car someday but it wont happen until I can wear it out and it's not going to be ez, but it sure will be fun.:)

I haven't been to the track in 10 years, even though I live 15 minutes away.
But with some nice two lanes around here, it sees 7K every time out.
Not revving these cars to their max is like marrying an opera singer, and never going to see her perform, or dating a porn star and never.....well, you get the idea.

Hi Dom--Don't know who you talked with but there are some newer people who don't know all the names yet (high turnover business) and in any case are often trying to steal customers so they won't admit they know someone. Nice part of the car selling business. They mentioned Dave Benck, a good friend with whom I am occaisionally confused. I sold BMWs there for a couple of years and now reside next door in the MINI building (which as you might have noticed is under construction). Still sell a few BMWs now and then; have two working right now. Sorry I missed you. Give me a call next time you are coming up 847-975-3942. --Bob

Oh yes Paul. Your journey to the dark side was complete. Lol! Your orgasmic illustration of the high revving LT5 is quite vivid Pual. I guess you could say that we are all pornographically addicted to the LT5 in some way. The difference is we don't have to enter the adult book store incognito and rent our favorite porno. We just walk into the garage and slide into the tight seat "at least in the 90 model" and slap it into reverse to back out of the hibernation cave where the beast lies dormant to then tear up the streets with this out dated throwback to the late 80's "in style" but underestimated monster that lives within to surprise those not in the know "which largely culminates the masses in our society" Would you not agree with this most descriptive and colorful statement?
