Ok guys, Hopefully someone can shed some light on this for me. My 91 has a non operating high tail light. It was inop since I bought the car, so I figured maybe I would be lucky and the bulbs were bad! No such luck. Changed all four and no dice. I am referencing the FSM and it talks about checking for opens on ckt 20 or ground ckt 150. This is greek to me! Anyone care to offer some advice? I really am clueless...not afraid to admit. Also my backup lights arent working either!! Thanks guys!

Open means no 12V coming TO the light bulb socket. Bad ground means 12V is coming TO the socket, but 12V can't ground out to the frame.
You have a multimeter?
You need one, or you need a LOT of money to buy parts blindly, and hope to find a winner (NEVER works THAT way).

My high mount brakelight was inop when I took the car for State Inspection. The dealer changed the bulb, ran the wires, etc. When I looked it up online on my phone and told them there were TWO brakelight switches - they were like "Oh yeah....we were gonna check that next" (yeah right) Guess what the problem was... SO - check out the brakelight switches under the dash...

CHMSL check first at the pedal and the second SL switch. The BU lights yes could be the connector at the switch, if you slap the shift lever a few times while entering reverse you can sometimes free the detent ball in the switch itself. Run it up to temperature and just exercise the shift lever through reverse a few times. It's a tough switch to remove but if you remove it and clean/soak the detent ball there's often nothing wrong with the switch, it just doesn't get the "exercise" it needs. Everything electrical needs a little exercise. the mirror, window switches, a/c control, DIC and the radio controls.
Your FSM will point you towards the correct switch.
