View Full Version : Installed No Flex Frame Stiffener Bar System

Very interesting day yesterday....
Installed a new No Flex Frame Stiffener Bar System and to be honest I was very skeptical before installing it. Saw it 2 years ago and wondered "IF" it would make a huge difference.
Finished installing the kit about 8pm and drove around for about an hour after it. My car did have a little squeaking and rattling (it has 82k miles) and after, MINIMAL.... Turns were much tighter!
Need to drive it much more extensively and play with the tightening bars more.
So far, very impressed!
http://www.vette2vette.com/product/86-96-c4-no-flex-frame-stiffener-bar-system
I did call the makers of the no flex system and they are interested in giving a system away @ Corvettes of Carlisle! So another reason to come to Carlisle! More free bee's!
They said they would also do a group buy once or twice a year as well (Just for us)

Jason did say that a GM employee had designed this and offered it to GM but that they rejected it so as not to pay that person royalties. That person had already been collecting other royalties for some other improvement. Maybe it's my memory but I just don't recall the name being Killebrew. Again, I can be totally wrong on that and wouldn't be surprised if I am.

Bob,
The hypothesis behind this is that the front and back flex relative to each other, not side to side torquing or twisting that is the issue. So the helps the chassis keep from folding on itself along the width of the car. Basically augmenting what the targa top does now when in place.

Thanks for posting and reminding me to install these that I bought several years ago when Jeff posted. I'm going to make time this weekend after finally having some time. A few weeks ago I was in the Phoenix area and did the Z06 Experience at Bondurant (C7 Stingray did not arrive in time) and what a blast it was to drive that car. I want to stiffen up the chassis and will also add the Brey Krause harness bar with harness too. I think it will complement the DRM coilovers and other rear suspension mods to get all these parts off the shelf so gotta get off my arse. Thanks again for the motivation and reminder.

I really think these should have been a part of the ZR-1 package. The motor has so much HP that hammering the throttle twists the frame and causes the positraction to react further amplifying the problem. I believe this sets in motion a back and forth momentum in the chassis that prevents low speed hookup. Once the car finally dampens this motion it then can really start to roll. JMHO,

Tyler,
So you think these would help the ZR "bite" better at the track? And w more power, getting it to the ground gets more problematic. Is that why the ZR appears to accelerate stronger in the second half of the 1/4?

Just using 60 ft times you can see there is something going on, the only car I know of that solved that was Fastlane and he went with a Ford 9 inch which would resist the torqueing better. The only other solution would be a computer controlled traction control and even then I think the flex would still be a problem.
Tyler
Jeff,
With your black ZR-1 the mounting bolts show up. You could just paint them
black ,or install 49th street rockers to hide the front and rear mounting bolts.
I drag race my Zr-1 and my 60ft. times avg. 1.73 to 1.78 , 1/4 mile times
avg 11.65 to 11.72 @ 118- 120 mph. I might have to look into frame stiffener
bar system.

Yeah, I have the rockers waiting to get painted
I ordered the no flex frame stiffener for my 1990 auto eq. zr-1 on Dec.
17. 2013. installation was completed on the 21 of Dec on a 4 post lift.It took
a little longer then what the instructions said. Front brackets took about
20 mins to install. The rear brackets took a bit longer because i have DRM
c4 trailing arm brackets installed. the lower dog leg had to be moved to gain
access to the lower trailing arm bracket bolt.
After installing the rear frame stiffener bracket and bolt, torque the assembly
to 80 lbs. The lower dog leg was reinstalled and ride height checked.
Without adjusting the frame stiffener i jacked up the car at the right front
(about 5in off the ground) i could not open the doors. lowered the car tighten
the frame stiffener bars and raised the right front again, i could open the door.
Took the z for a ride Sunday the 22nd, car felt more stable without body
flex.
I drag race my z and have pulled 60ft times of 1.73 to 1.79 running 11.69
to 11.76 @ 117-119 mph. Next test and tune will be Jan 4, 2014, I'll
you know how this works out.

Well i hit the track this past Sunday with the frame stiffener bars in place.
Made 5 runs, temp was between 71 to 80 deg, good bite , air was good but not
great. With the bars in place the car hooked good but did not improve 60ft.
times. 60ft. times for all 5 runs ranged from 1.74 to 1.76 , 1/8 mile E.T. time
from 7.66 to 7.68 with mph between 92.84 slowest to 93.05 fastest.
The quickest 1/4 mile run was 11.87 @ 116.70 and the slowest run was
11.93 @ 108.53. I have to say that the bars did a good job, the the car ran
straight and steady. If you want to see a run ( 2nd run of the day ) Go to
www.raceosw.com, click on photos and video ,click on OSW Funday Sunday
01-05-2014, page 2 4th row down 3rd pic, click on on photo for full page
shot. Note that i still have the stock front tires on not the skinny tires.
Thats about it , i need to go outside and cover my stag horn plant as the
temp will drop to 32 deg or lower tonight.
Next time out i will have the skinny tires on the car.

John- I see the photo. Is there any video?
Besides the automatic, what are the mods on your car? Gears? Tires? Stall speed? Have you taken any weight out of the car?
I've got a similar car (see below), and I've always thought that an automatic would improve the qtr. mi. times by getting a better launch.
My stick shift car has done a best e.t. (12.06)- .13 slower, but 9mph faster. @117, with a 60ft. time, (1.76), under similar conditions.
So, in a hypothetical race, they launch the same and are even at the 60ft. mark. At mid track you're pulling away. In the traps I'm catching up but not enough to catch you. And you win by what? 2-3 car lengths? Interesting. It looks like the auto is allowing a good consistent launch, but is taking away some h.p. at the other end of the track.
I doubt if the stiffener bars help in the qtr. mi. Probably more suited to a road course where the stiffened chassis would keep your tires planted better. What do you think?
BTW, the weather in Fla. now is like the Chicago guys get in the Fall, probably ideal for making power. I'd bet you could pull an 11.75 in this cold air with the same setup, if the car hooks on a cold track.
We've got to race some day....but I'd better find some more H.P. first.
Bob Eyres
01-07-2014, 07:18 AM
Well, Duh. I just re-read your post and see that I was looking at your slowest run, not fastest.:merror:
It looks like we're trapping at roughly the same speed, but your e.t. is almost two tenths quicker. Looks like the auto helps in the qtr. mi., but not just at the launch.
I still want to race, but I better go see Haibeck first.
Hi Bob,
Mods are SGC 368 550hp engine pkg with stage one cams, 3.73 rear gears
jeal headers, front sway bar removed. lite weight racing seat (driver)
4-point roll bar from DRM with swing out door bar. Relocated batt to rear
pass side. Motor makes 418 rwhp thru the 4l80E trans, do not remember what
the rwtq numbers are.
I think the frame stiffener bars made the car leave better. AS it appears to
raise the car up and out and not make the rear squat down.
Go to personal racing stories, check out "a little test and tune ".
I foot brake at 1600-1800 rpm when leaving the line.
Some time this week i will change out the front stock tires and rims for the
pro street tires and 6in wide modified 1990 rims.
If you can make Orlando Speed World on the 18th of Jan. Its $10 to race
and free BBQ. Check their web site www.raceosw.com for information.

I doubt that these bars affect the 60ft. times on the average ZR-1, because it seems to me that the only flex that would affect rear-end geometry is if there were frame flex longitudinally between the rear end center section, and the front mounting points of the trailing arms, (which is not a great distance). Isn't that what the Rippie trailing arm brackets are for? To create ideal rear end geometry at launch?
In fact, the entire bar assembly is mounted forward of the rear-end center section. And although it affects overall chassis stiffness significantly, does not really affect rear-end geometry.
It's clear that the affect of these bars would be much more noticeable on a road course where overall chassis rigidity comes into play to a greater degree.
Any chassis engineers out there? My main question is: Do the bars do a better job of stiffening the frame than a four point cage would?
Or, would a combination of the two be the best of all worlds.
My thinking is that neither would improve the drag racing launch significantly enough to incur the penalty of increased weight, (and cost). And, so far, no one has presented any data that suggests otherwise.

Clint,
I haven't taken any pictures of it on my car, but I can this weekend. Installation difficulty, not really...
Figure it takes a few hours to get it set up and it only needs 2 wholes
drilled. It bolts into where the X brace would in the front and it uses
2 wholes in the rear dog bones.
Gordon did a hell of a job creating this. Kudos!!!

Clint,
I haven't taken any pictures of it on my car, but I can this weekend. Installation difficulty, not really...
Figure it takes a few hours to get it set up and it only needs 2 wholes
drilled. It bolts into where the X brace would in the front and it uses
2 wholes in the rear dog bones.
Gordon did a hell of a job creating this. Kudos!!!
David
Sounds great,David. Looking forward to seeing some photos of it on your car.

I should add, I don't have the added hole drilled, it was added after I got my prototypes and I never got a newer set from Jason. if anyone has a picture of where the hole is I would appreciate it

yesh lowered and actually brought it up recently due to replacing the top shock bushings. Still need to work out the Pass rear
wheels are 18s and the front brakes are Wilwood 6p Narrow Superlites ( like the guy has on CF)

Is that the 14in or 13in Wilwood kit? Need to do something about my brakes soon and Wilwood is one option I've been eyeballing. Unfortunately our 18in Shelbys are more like 17in wheels when it comes to brake clearance.

Thanks for the link to those photos,Jeff. I had it in my head those tied in the front shock towers, somehow. That system kinda reminds me of the subframe connectors we welded into the floors of unibody Camaros and Novas,to tie their front & rear frames together.

I like the looks of those,David. It also doesn't look like ground clearance is affected very much,at all.

Where may one find the members only section?
Is the member's only section on the ZR1 registry site. How long does it take to sync up the forum with the paid membership.

It was nice meeting you as well.
I didn't realize there was a paid subscription before reading this thread. There is a wealth of knowledge here so it is worth supporting this community.
I tried looking for these frame stiffener's on the member's shop, but there wasn't anything listed. Is it the standard discount for paying members at Vette2Vette? Is there a group buy that is going to happen?

I recently installed the No Flex Stiffeners on my car. It is possible that I don't have them adjusted properly yet but they did not help as much as I had hoped. Going to try to tighten them a little more. If I can't obtain better results they're coming off.

Just make sure they are even on both sides. Count the threads and get as close as you can.
