AutoZone for mine. 1/2 drive breaker bar with a pipe extension. Then a dab of no-seize grease on the threads when reinstalling to just "snug" .

If you want the best tool for the job, you want the Hazet socket. This is what the VW, Mercedes etc mechanics buy because it is low profile and squeezes into tight trans tunnels very easily.

OR trim an M17 hex key to length and use an M17 box-wrench. That get's you to "minimum height" and the least likely to affected by leverage that dislodges them. A friend actually "epoxied" the hex in an M17 box wrench for just the ZF service.

I got mine at a local auto parts place....either O'reilly's or Autozone. None of the Sears in Augusta, GA, Columbia, SC, El Paso, or Las Cruces, NM have the 17mm hex. No luck at Lowes or Home Depot.

It came as part of a hex socket set and not individual. The whole set was cheaper than the single socket Sears was willing to order and it's held up without issue doing 3 car's worth of fluid changes over the last couple years.

Ok, yeah, those Snapon ones are way nicer than my cheapy parts store one..... it's nice they give you some extra clearance, although it hasn't been too much of an issue.

An easy and cheap way is to take an 11/16 bolt and put 2 nuts on it and
"Lock" them together by tightening firmly against each other. To make a permanent one
you could put a spot of weld on the nut but not everyone has a welder. Put the head of the
bolt in the recessed hex of the plug and use a box end wrench or breaker bar with a socket to remove plug.
11/16 is close enough to 17mm to not make a difference and easier to find in your box of assorted nuts, bolts and junk we all collect over the years or you could
use a 17mm bolt and nuts if you must...

I got the 17mm hex wrench from the local Sears Hardware for $10.
Put it in the plug and used a 17mm end wrench to turn it. Easy peasy. I do like that socket one though....;)
