Yeah, but are we talking about a measurable hp difference?

Zero additional hp. Just like a lightweight flywheel.....a light weight flywheel and/or lightweight pulleys driven by the harmonic balancer allows quicker engine acceleration which in turn allows you to get to a higher engine hp output quicker.
In other words......you reach 7,000 engine rpm quicker which multiplied by torque is Horsepower. Omega X T where Omega is Radians per second and T is torque in ft lbs......
550 ft-lbs/sec is one horsepower. Take a look at L98 Frisbee Horsepower below ;)

So if F=ma, w A being increased, then you have a greater force but you've also reduced the mass. A wash?

So if F=ma, w A being increased, then you have a greater force but you've also reduced the mass. A wash?
NOT ;)
a=F/m where a is vehicle acceleration and m is mass of ZR1.
F = Wheel Torque divided by wheel rolling radius. F increases with engine rpm and increases faster if engine rpm increases faster by reducing pulley inertia. m decreases by reduced pulley weight albeit such a small percentage as to be Negligible.
Keep in mind these pulleys have the largest part of their inertial resistance......The fluids they are pumping such as water and power steering fluid.
All that being said true meticulous, fastidious, picky perfectionists like some of us install these pulleys on all their Zs (me included) :D
Pete is offering aluminum pulley colors (Colors are Black,Blue,Red,Silver) not offered anywhere else. I am assuming these are Powder Coated or better yet (anodized) colors.

My brain hurts lol. Valid question is however Pete PCed or Anodized ?
Ok.
Anodized.
Never Dyno tested the pulley's to me it's like going to a lighter (aluminum)flywheel, they serve 2 purposes dead weight and rotational weight and of course looks, ok 3 purposes :-D
Jeff, i do have the under drive WP add $40.

Any chance of getting Purple like the Tial Wastegates and BOV?
Put me down for a set and I want the underdrive water pump pulley too. Since i'm local I may pick them up instead of paying for shipping.
BTW is the under drive water pump pulley made of the same lightweight aluminum?
And i'll take silver.

With Pete's approval to post here, I am offering to purchase your take off pulleys, P/S & W/P, for $30.00 apiece, shipped to me. Must be in good condition, straight & undamaged. Send to the address listed on the web store, www.jerrysgaskets.com. When the pulleys arrive, I will send your payment.
Are the pulley's specific to the lt5? I assume the crank shaft, but what about the water pump?
I assume yes but don't want to assume anything.

Who knows.... sometimes the same part number is used consistently on other applications. The PN for the ZR-1 pulleys doesn't show any other applications to the best of my knowledge, but that doesn't mean anything.

I don't know if these match up to anything else, these are copies of the stock pulley's.
No Crank pulleys

Ok,i will put in the order Tuesday.
If anybody else wants a set please let me know before Tuesday morning.

Hi Pete,
I'd have seen this sooner (like, last time around) if it was in the FS section.
2 Qs if you will,
#1 how much weight are we talking about? I haven't had either of these off the car.
#2 how much underdrive on the WP, and will it still cool at idle on a hot day?
Thanks much, glad I saw this. I don't get by here like I used too (been busy).
Best,
- Jeff

Stock Water Pump 28.3 oz
Aluminum WP 14.3 oz
Stock Power Steering 30.5 oz
Aluminum PS 20.5
The Water Pump Underdrive Pulley is 10%
I have not done real world test but there are a few ZR-1's out there with
the UD WP pulley's i haven't had any bad feedback.

I have a thought about under drive on the water pump. I know they cavitate at high speed, but at low speed is the pump moving enough water to cool the engine. Maybe over heating at low speed is not an air flow issue, but a water flow issue. If this goes anywhere, it may warrent a new thread. Sorry Pete, didn't mean to side track the thread.

I don't believe you "side-tracked" anything. I brought attention to the thread for a member who was looking for a PS pulley and suggested this thread to him to help in his search. It's revived some interest it seems to Pete's original post that was in 11/2013.
I'd think "all is well"..

I think it has been accepted that higher coolant temperatures in traffic and at slow speed is definitely an air flow (through the radiator) issue. I think it has also been accepted that Coolant Flow Water Pump Cavitation is definitely an issue at high engine rpms when the Water Pump is driven by the Serpentine Belt with stock Water Pump Pulley. If you are running continuously at high speed/high rpms you would not only want but need an under drive water pump pulley or other power source for your water pump. There are also several technical discussions related to Engine Coolant Flow Thermostat Selection.
There are existing threads including technical discussions of both situations and options (Air Flow through the radiator and water Pump Cavitation). The Air Flow discussions include options related to higher flow rate Cooling Fans. The Water Pump discussions include Under Drive Pulleys and electrical driven Water Pumps (driven by lower speed electrical motors vice the serpentine belt at very high engine rpms). Thermostat opening temperatures are also discussed as that relates to Engine Cooling.
Other issues discussed in these related threads include the Cooling Stack which consists of the Engine Cooling Radiator, Engine Oil Cooler, and ZR-1 Interior Cooling (AC Condenser). These related discussions also include the Engine Coolant Thermostat Options. There are several Aluminum Radiator Options that DO offer better engine Cooling in traffic at slow speeds or when idling at stop lights.
I can find the various threads and technical discussions related to Engine Cooling and post here as desired. ;)

We are right back with Pete as he has used Electric Water Pumps
Electric Water Pumps (http://www.zr1.net/forum/showthread.php?p=227285)
I had a 55GPM electric WP in my Z for about 4 years, as everybody knows i don't road race or any kind of circle track racing only drag race.
The 55GPM with 160* t-stat with holes and fans on at 170*it was awesome in hot summer traffic if i left my Z idling for a while she would run up to temp fans on at 170* it would cool her down 165* fans would go off it would do this all day long.
Remember the electric pump constantly pumps 55GPM no matter the RPM.
Went back to stock water pump what i notice is my fans run nonstop (fans on 170* same T-stat) in traffic once i start moving and get air to the radiator is the only time she will cool down to 160-165.
I think with stock water pump we need more air to radiator.
Tony Davila has tested/added an extra fan to the front of his radiator and he has mentioned it helped keep temps down.
Hope this helps.
Pete

One point regarding engine control and coolant temps. I believe Pete runs his calibration in Open Loop. The ECM goes Closed Loop ~ 64C, but it does not update the BLMs until CTS reaches 80C or 180F. So if your chip is programmed for Closed Loop, it will not update fueling as you drive because it does not "Learn" at temps under 80C.

So, same air flow, more water flow equals better cooling.
I have a thought about under drive on the water pump. I know they cavitate at high speed, but at low speed is the pump moving enough water to cool coolergine. I have the ud water pump pulley and after the install my engine temps always are near 180 - 190. Hottest day here in Chicago as about 93* with high humidity, 45 minutes in rush hour traffic and my car gets up to 214* at most. Once I start moving again the temps come down quickly to ~200. This is with the a.c. on and a fluidyne radiator.
The car can idle in the hot weather all day and not pass 200*. I believe with rush hour traffic the heat from all the cars, and me needing a new front air dam I can run cooler.
I have installed a pusher fan in front of the radiator but I have not needed to connect it.
I have no regrets with my setup and no over heating issues.
XfireZ51
08-25-2015, 10:42 AM
My experience w the Fluidyne is the same as Karl. I have the fans come on at
87 and 90C and that's enough to keep temps below 212F even in the 90s. Once driving, temps don't get above 190F.

Pete.....received the Stock size Aluminum Black Water Pump Pulleys today.....very very nice. Can you get one more Stock size Black Water Pump Pulley by any chance?
Thanks,
Cliff
P.S. For those thinking it is complicated to remove the original stock water pump pulley.....NOT :p
All you have to do is remove the Air Duct and Air Horn (6 torx). Then remove 4 (8mm heads) Water Pump Pulley bolts (Take tension off the belt tensioner and hold). Slip old water pump pulley off and up in front of the Alternator and out. Reverse for installation of New Aluminum Water Pump Pulley.
Cliff, I don't have one on the shelf but can order one more for you.
The only issue is these are the last ones with the holes he doesnt want to do holes the only way he will do them is at extra cost.$100
The holes started cause i wanted them as light as possible for myself.
Now on no holes same old price with holes add $100

Just give me heads-up so I can clear space on the schedule to do your dozen. Looks like we can go even lighter than the 6 holes. When you are ready we'll discuss that and I can do 12 holes for still less than you were quoted. :dancing:dancing
