View Full Version : Clutch Slave Cylinder Question
I know it pops up often but I just can't seem to find a solution by searching. My clutch slave cylinder went bad; I bought a new one that is supposed to fit. The new one is a cast model and I can't make it fit. There's not quite enough clearance for the clutch hydraulic line to insert into the slave cylinder; other than that I have enough clearance for the bleeder screw and can bolt the cylinder to the transmission. I've looked around at zr1 slave cylinders on different websites (Rock Auto, Ecklers, Corvette Central) and they all look the same as the one I purchased (off amazon, supposed to fit) Am I missing something here? What have I done wrong?

I have the cast iron one on my car. The bleed screw faces down. Screwing the hydrolic line is a little tricky because its against the tunnel wall but it's do able. Its been on my car 4 years now.

Let me expand a little on installation. In order to have enough room you have to unscrew the mounting screws from the bell housing. Line the slave up with the bell housing holes then insert the mounting screws. You'll need 1/4 drive and extensions and a swivel to do it. Just take your time otherwise you risk cross threading the threads in the bell house. Lining them up while holding the slave up to it can be a little challenging and threading them in striaght but a little finness you can do it.
Ok, here are pictures of what I was able to do; it's mounted on the housing and I can start tightening the nuts but there's no way I can actually get the flare nut onto the slave cylinder. What the heck am I doing wrong?
And yeah, I think I might get the factory one rebuild. The slave cylinder is the second to last job before the Vette is totally done. Anyone have an idea on how much a rebuild will set me back?

Seems everyone complains about these cast ones, they don't fit well.

If you call Jim J at powertorquesystems, he'll explain the options. I purchased a NOS slave from him for $160. He does rebuild them also.

I think you got the wrong kind/application. I got one of those $50 cast units and it has a bleed screw that points straight down and i do not recall the tube fitting being hard at all. bleeding it before putting it on the bell housing was interesting, but the mounting was a snap.

Here were mine (old/new). Something doesn't look right on your part. Are the later years different than 90-91 slave cylinders?

Mine looks just like Mikes. The one you got looks fugly. I'd take it back and go down the street to a different auto parts store. I'll bet they give the right one.

Before you get another Slave Cylinder....set the old Slave Cylinder and new Slave Cylinder side by side to make sure of the issues...then take the old Slave Cylinder with you to the Parts Store ;)
Mine lines up exactly with my old one. I thought it was the 1990 that was different from all the rest. The 1991 and up is the one with the bleeder screw facing up at an angle. Or so I thought. Mine has a V shaped setup so that everything is facing the transmission tunnel and impossible to do anything with. I cussed at it for about two hours yesterday trying to make everything work.

I believe your are correct. The 1990 is different from the 91+

I have my master and slave (and a few other parts) from my automatic conversion. PM @ me if you need parts...
So this is a follow up post and a plug for Jim from the power torque systems web link mentioned above. I mailed my original slave cylinder off to him after a chat with him on the phone and I am very impressed with the work he did on it. He rebuilt everything for about $60 and had it turned around and mailed back to me 24 hours later. Installed everything back on the Vette and finally got to take back down off the stupid jackstands. I had no idea my slave cylinder was so worn out until I bled and installed the rebuilt unit. It was like learning to drive the Vette again! Kudos to Jim! he really saved my butt. If you are reading this thread and are in my shoes please don't hesitate to make use of his services.

Jim was also super helpful when I dealt with him. I bought a new SS from him (still need to send my old one back to him for rebuild) because mine was seeping fluid.
As long as I'd owned the car, it would never go into third gear cleanly, I assumed the synchro was bad. Once I replaced the SS, she shifts nice and smooth into third ever since.
If your SS is wet with fluid, call Jim and replace it!
