View Full Version : 8 cams are better than four!
New owner jumping in. I just bought this '90 ZR-1, brought it home tonight and I'm looking forward to really getting to know it better. This is my first Corvette, let alone a Z. Always been a euro guy, but this car is just flat amazing. I've liked them from the time I saw the original MT article and now I've got one in e garage. Black/gray with 43k on it, has a few needs which I'll be documenting, but it's 100% original and the underside is clean clean clean. Came with the pizza box and receipts for a lot of recent work.
The original owner bought it new and drove it daily for three years, then bought a 93 and parked the 90. Drove it sparingly for the next five years and then parked it for good. So there it sat until January of this year, didn't move for fifteen years. The guy I bought it from picked it up then and brought it back to life. Now it's my turn to take the next step, and I'm really looking forward to bringing it back to #1 condition and driving the hell out of it. :D
Oh and if you can't tell, I'm a big 4-cam guy. The Z is in good company! Better pics coming soon once I get out in the daylight.

Welcome 4 cam. My Z is blk/gray too and has 56,000 mi. This ZR-1 forum has great people and outstanding info in it. The ZR-1 net registry has good info of what to do next concerning possible issues with an original car. Because of these folks I feel very confident that I can fix any issues on this car which makes driving it a real pleasure. Like blue flame says ... Permagrin is what they call it.

It is either a late model 308 or an early model 328. The early model 308 had a very large front crash bumper and the late model 328 did not have the rubberized crash bumper. Either way I am sure he is going to have 3x the fun in the ZR-1.
BTW welcome to the group.

Good eye, yes they are 93 wheels. I know where the original wheels are and I'm going to see if I can get them. Always good to have multiple sets. The glass top is in the same place, going to try to get that back too.

Maybe I should have said 64 valves are better than 32? It's kinda funny that I doubled the number of cams and valves in my garage, but almost tripled the displacement!

Nope, that's a new one. I definitely need to collect some American-centric resources. Everything I have speaks with a euro accent. :)
There's a Cam in my Watch???
Depends on the watch. :D
The PO did a nice job getting it back on the road, replacing anything that fuel touched, belts, hoses, etc. All injectors are new, brand new tires, and some other stuff. It drives strong, and I'm really surprised at the quick turn in considering the size of the lump up front. Didn't expect that. But it sat for fifteen years and you can tell. The paint desperately needs a good cut and buff, and the car just needs a really thorough cleaning. There's dirt in every little nook and cranny.
That said, this will not be a show car other than some local fun events. It will be my almost-daily-driver and will definitely see autocross and possibly track time. That also means I have to address a couple things immediately if not sooner. Open to any suggestions!
There's a pulley up front that is screaming. My current guess is the tensioner or water pump. The tensioner has a distinct wobble at idle so it needs to be replaced anyway.
Water temp creeps up at a stop light, too high for my comfort. I suspect the fan switch isn't working.
High idle, very high. Like 2k. And when my wife followed me home last night, she said the car smelled really rich. I'm guessing vacuum leaks somewhere might cause both issues, but I really have no idea where to start.
Climate control refused to turn off for a while. Then mysteriously the Off button worked. Weird. But it worked just fine, cold a/c, warm heat, and it maintained the interior temp like it should.
How the hell do the high beams work? I thought Ferrari had a bizarre headlight switch, but I couldn't figure this one out in the dark. :) Oh and I'll be looking into a light upgrade - the headlights are pathetic.
I'm sure there will be more, but this is a start. I'll probably use this thread to track stuff if that's ok. Sun is coming out, I'll have some better pics by lunchtime!

2) The second fan doesn't turn on until the temp gets almost to the hash mark, used to scare the hell out of me.
Marc H (http://www.zr1specialist.com/index.html) has a chip that will address what temp the fans come on at, and addresses some other common issues. Highly recommended. Look Marc's site over, there is a wealth of info on it. -Steve
Welcome to the forum, and congrats on the purchase.
Oh and I have got to disable that damn 1-4 skip shift. The first time it happened I thought something broke, scared the hell outta me. Then I realized what happened (and saw the idiot light on the dash), and scared became irritated. I know if you push 1st a little harder it's not an issue, but I will be driving this car in heavy traffic and it's going to drive me completely nuts.

efnfast, just posted a link to all your fixes, If you look into Marc's site it will address the 90 prom issues with idle and give you the info. the see what prom you have. Marc's chip will fix that and the temp. The stock prom cuts the 1st fan on at around 225 and second fan around 235.
The AC controls. This may help

I'm sure we can get along :) I love HREs for many reasons but don't worry .. It won't be so much a rediculous looks only slam, more like lowered with nice offsets and reduced fender gaps. Sacrilege! If you've ever been in a 308 ripping at seven grand, you wouldn't want one in there either. No the power isn't the same, but it's a very light car and the sound is something else.
Just like I wouldn't put a Ferrari engine in a Corvette...just wrong. :)
Here's a better pic out in the sun. Going to give it a nice bath and then I'll post some better ones. Second pic, you can see what I'm dealing with in the paint. Those swirls are mostly dirt, but once it's clean it will need some serious work.

Add one more item to the list. Driver's window stopped working. And of course it's down, which means no washing today. Passenger window works fine, so it's not the circuit breaker. Now I have to do some digging. I think my first purchase is going to be the factory service manual, unless it's available online somewhere?

Get it off of eBay. If you go with the eBay .pdf download, be careful of what you're paying for - some of the .pdf downloads don't amount to much more than Chilton's / Haynes / Clymer's, and they're good for only one thing:
1) Hang it in the 'library', where the seat has a hole in the middle ;).
2) Tear off a page
3) read
4) wipe,
5) flush,
6) repeat if necessary
3a) between 3, and 4 (krinkle if you're tender in the hindquarters :bootyshak ).

The high idle is almost surely the result of a common vacuum leak. there are a couple of tubes under the plenum that are highly likely to be the cause. (Popped off)
The hot coolant temp is classic C4. Probably the radiator is partially plugged. If not with actual garbage and paper, then with fine dirt which can be sprayed off. An aftermarket chip also can address this by commanding the fans to come on sooner. You can also force the fans on with a/c.
I found the early climate controls different than the later ones (like on a 95 C4). keep playing with it- some people report dirty button contacts- these can be taken apart and cleaned.
The LT5 tensioner has become difficult to find new- I bought one two years ago, but the quickest solution would be to see if Marc Haibeck can rebuild yours. new pulleys and bearings are easily bought though- if the spring part isn't bad.
Thanks Mike. I was sure the fix for a high idle wasn't a chip, since I doubt the factory intended a 2k idle! I'll know more this morning, when I finally get a chance to do a little work on it. Yesterday got too busy, but today is pretty much open and I'm giving myself the day off. :)
Quick question before I break anything. I'm going to find the problem with the driver's window too. Does the switch panel simply pop off? Otherwise removing the door panel looks pretty straightforward (yes I found the screw behind the lock bar).

I had the problems with window switches and AC. Go to Dynomite's Solutions (top of page-sticky), Electrical and then "AC and Wndow switch connections". The AC is more often than not the long prong connector between the switch face plate and the control head body. Needs cleaning. On windows I found the switch contacts arced over a bit. The switch panel comes out with 2 screws. Good luck. --Bob

Well it's not the switches, definitely the motor. I pulled the switch panel and they are working fine, and I can hear the motor clicking as I push the switch, without actually turning. Time to dig further.
Oh and the noise up front is definitely the water pump. Tensioner bobbles a bit but it is not the source of the noise. I suppose this is bonding. :)

Sorry your having issues, but sometimes happens when a car sits for many years. here is a link to replacing it.

Got the window regulator out. Looking it over its clear water got in there at some point. I'm going to bite the bullet and order a new one rather than try to just replace the motor. At this point wife's eyes are just rolling. :)
Also had time to pull the air horn and get ready to pull the belt. Headed out of town now so the car will have to wait until Sunday.
And fwiw while I was listening to the pulleys and determining that it was indeed the water pump, the idle was perfect. Go figure. This was with the accordion removed but the air horn still in place.

Mark,
Check the numbers on the prom, the 90's had a change to fix idle issues. Marc's site lists them.
" The performance calibration AYBKG is based on GM's latest release of the calibration for '90 LT5 engines. GM calibration AYBK was released as a service part via Product Service Bulletin 476503, dated February, 1994. It was released to address problems with idle fluctuation after a hot restart, increase in idle speed after a hot restart and excessive engine speed during coast down to a stop with the clutch disengaged."
http://zr1specialist.com/HAT%20Web/presentations/Calibrations.pdf
Great info and considering how this car sat for so long, I'll bet its original. Come to think of it, the engine was warm when the idle was so high. This afternoon was a cold start and the idle was perfect. Maybe I'll buy more from Marc than I planned...
mike100
10-11-2013, 11:47 PM
When my evap purge line vac source had popped off the plenum, it would idle at 900 rpm cold, but creep up to 1400 or ?? whatever when it warmed up. These cars do tend to run on with a high idle until the car almost reaches a stop, but parked, it should be able to idle at 700 rpm.
I would still do the stiff binder book in front of the air horn to see if the engine stalls out or not. You will hear he leak if it can still manage 600 rpm with the intake blocked

Take that window motor apart and see if you can clean the magnito and the magnets, hookit up to a battery and see if it works.
Sometimes they get water in them I have fixed some in the past without replacing them.
The rust is just enough not to let it turn.
I probably will see if I can clean up the old one and get it working again, just for the hell of it. But for a car I plan on driving a lot, I felt better about installing a new one. One of the motor housing bolts is missing and isn't in the door, which means someone has been in there in the past. Probably for the exact same issue. The housing itself doesn't fit flush any more either.
So Ecklers just got my first order, and I'm calling Marc tomorrow morning for my second - water pump, tensioner and maybe a tune. Too bad he doesn't have a tensioner in stock, so it will take a bit longer to get mine rebuilt. Today's project, determine the prom currently installed, pull the tensioner and the water pump. And since the door panel is off, I'll take a shot at cleaning it to see what it takes.

jeez I didn't know you had so much euro stuff. and the 68! if that's disturbing, I prefer to be disturbed. nice collection. I really like the 355, very pretty car. just needs a couple of turbos hanging off it to get to 800 or so HP and it would work for me just fine!
Yesterday work interfered with work. I had to deliver something for a client, thinking it would take a couple hours at most. Eleven hours later and I finally finished, never had a chance to get into the garage. Not my favorite way to spend a Sunday. And to top it off, Ecklers is out of stock on the window regulator, with nothing until late November. I can't wait that long, so I either find one locally or start hacking the motor on the old one. Maybe tonight I'll just sleep in the garage.
I got plenty of garage time last night, but finally cried uncle around midnight. The serpentine belt and tensioner were out in about 10 minutes and I thought, this is really an easy job. But 2.5 hours to remove 16 bolts and the pump wouldn't budge, making me think it was glued on. Then I finally spied that bastard bolt between the power steering pump and the alternator, hidden under an inch of crud. Getting that one loose was a challenge by itself, and then the water pump fell off like it should. Problem is, it's still attached to the lower hose and no amount of blood, sweat or swearing would get that hose off. It's stuck on there and I simply can't get my hands in there to get any leverage to get it off. I even donated blood, just like you're supposed to. At the end of hour 3 it was closing on midnight and I called it quits for the night.
Any hints/tricks to getting that hose loose? It's ridiculous that a hose has me stopped at this point.

Take a single edge razer blade and cut hose length wise over coupler. Use flat screw driver to raise edges of cut hose and remove hose. Replace with new hose ;)

I have a complete set of hoses which are in very good condition. Took them off when I went w Samco. PM if interested.
After digging so deeply into the front end of the engine, it's pretty apparent that lots of stuff like the tensioner, water pump and hoses are original. So I think I'll be going with new hoses, just for the peace of mind. Thanks for the offer though, appreciate it.
Got lots of bolt cleaning to do too. Some were downright crusty when they came out, and it looks like a couple get into oil passages? The oil that came out smelled burnt too, so an oil change is in the cards.
Let's see, I planned on a water pump and tensioner when I bought it. Now I've got a window regulator, hoses, oil change and misc vacuum connections too. Then I noticed the driver's seat "wings" don't work, climate control seems a bit random, and maybe a couple more small things. Hoping the wife doesn't kill me. I just want to drive! :D
Hose cut, pump is out and on its way to Marc. Tensioner too, and as luck would have it he's parting out a '91, so I'm getting the window regulator from that. With a little more luck, I'll be on the road by the weekend. I figure I'll solve the idle issue it has now and get everything running properly, 100% stock. Then I'll see about what kind of performance enhancements he's got, and get rid of that damned 1-4 shift.

You can just unplug the solenoid on the left side of the trans for now to get rid of the 1-4 lock out, you will still get the light on the dash but no lock out.
Care package from Marc Haibeck arrived and work commenced. The old gasket came off pretty easily and I cleaned up the surface. Then I started removing all the old hoses including the crossover pipe, and I am very glad I did. Incredible amount of corrosion in the crossover, totally unusable. I think I know what killed the water pump. I'll have to replace it, which means my goal of hitting the road tomorrow is not gonna happen. Also means I probably should flush the whole system a couple times. Does the block have freeze plugs?
Oh and two things. First, whoever decided to use all those pinch clamps should be shot. I'm replacing them all with proper hose clamps. Then that bottom hose to the thermostat is an incredible bitch to remove. Stupid pinch clamp, zero room to get any leverage, and an original hose completely glued in place. It took a combination of cutting the hose, the smallest channel locks I have, and a screwdriver slowly walking the clamp off. Oh and a nice finned cooler to make hash of my hands is a bonus.
So in the interests of getting at least one thing done, I installed the window regulator I got from Marc, worked perfectly. Window adjusted and drivers door back together, felt good. At least now I can roll the car out, wash it and get some decent pics.
Laugh if you want but getting that lower hose attached to the water pump has got to be one of the most difficult things I've ever done on a car. And I've changed motor mounts on a 928. It took hot water to soften the hose and practically climbing into the engine bay trying to get enough leverage, millimeter by millimeter. Holy hell my arms hurt.
But it's on and tomorrow I should finally button everything back up and bring the beast back to life. My wife is really looking forward to it.

Marc Haibeck seconds your complaint. When he had my engine out for porting last winter we talked about a preventive of replacing all the radiator hoses. He said they were all fine but said he wanted to replace the lower radiator hose anyway because it is such a pain in the butt to get out when the engine is in the car. Which he did. --Bob

jeez I didn't know you had so much euro stuff. and the 68! if that's disturbing, I prefer to be disturbed. nice collection. I really like the 355, very pretty car. just needs a couple of turbos hanging off it to get to 800 or so HP and it would work for me just fine!
Turbos would make it scream but I'm not that rich haha. Now I need a proper shop for all of it!

Nice breakfast, won't need to eat for a week!
Let's see... 86 valves, 13 cams, 4 carbs and one 1000 watt searchlite in cars, lawn mowers, a snowblower and a weedwacker (no cam...) at my house

How many valves you got, counting everything?
How'd that "Mess" work out?
It's ALIVE!!
Got my ZR-1 back on the ground yesterday afternoon and finally took that first real drive. OMG that engine is addictive. Incredibly smooth and just pulls all the way to the moon! I used Marc's coolant filling procedure and it worked perfectly, no issues at all. The car warmed up nicely, fans operated like they should, and wow does it ever run well.
Thanks to Steve (We Gone) for some last minute advice. When I first tried to start it, lights, camera, nothing. I was sure I had somehow tripped the security system and he had some great suggestions. Turns out I had just killed the battery. A quick jump from the wife's car and I had a rumbling 4-cam, 32-valve monster in the driveway.
Now that the car is running well and I have a functioning window, cleanup day is finally here. I'll give it a good wash and polish, and post some real pics. And I'll do some more driving.

Everything came out fine!!
410 valves!!!

Finally got out the cleaning supplies and went to town. A good wash and wax and it looks much better, but the paint still needs help. I may go to a pro detailer and have him really bring it back. But in the meantime it looks pretty good. I also took my wife for her first ride in it and she likes it too. Later this afternoon I'll pick up my daughter from her band competition, and she's definitely the "car girl" of the school. Should be fun.
The interior and engine are still dirty but I'll get to those next. The plan is to drive a lot, debug all the little stuff, and slowly bring it back to what it should be.

Lookin good....:dancing
My wife and I took the Corvette on our first real road trip today, up into the north GA mountains on a gorgeous fall afternoon. After 140 miles, everything was absolutely perfect and damn near 20mpg overall. Very happy with how it's running now, and my wife likes it a lot more. :)
