View Full Version : Help Identify My Brakes

As the title states, I am looking for a little help identifying the brakes on my car. The calipers are easy since they say "Brembo" on them. How about the two piece rotors? I can not find a single identifying mark on them. The rotor hat and the mounting pieces are the same light blue color and are aluminum. Does anybody recognize these?
I would estimate them to be from around 1995-1998.
Below are pics of the rotor and calipers, front and back of the rotor, and last the mounts.
Any ideas?

Those are Brembo rotors. Looks like a custom adapter for the rear caliper mount.

Did a little snooping and found this fellow who is a source for Guido who built
Brembo system upgrades for ZR-1s in the late 1990s:

I doubt TF was around then but he might be some help. Your real concern is where to
get replacement pads and rotors - some of this stuff was 993 Porsche.
The other possible is Callaway who also did conversions in those years too.
Hope this helps,
Glenn

Hey Eric - who did you buy that car from? Does it have a roll cage and a differential oil cooler?

So what is wrong with them?
Mine have always squeaked; even when new.

No problems at this point... The wheel was loose so I inspected for a bad wheel bearing and found upon disassembly that one or two of the fasteners holding the hat to the rotor were loosening. Could have been trouble, but I caught it early.
I may revisit this and put some thread-lock on all four corners. Any thoughts on this? I know they get hot, so I would need to investigate the temp rating of the thread-lock.
These may be impossible to find, or at least very expensive to replace the rotors, so its worth preventative maintenance on my part.

No experience with Brembo but I have ruined numerous sets of the Wilwood 2-piece rotors and they still have the rings. You can get them from HRP World just take some measurements and you should be good. If in question call them they are very knowledgeable.

BTW it is not expensive I think somewhere around 300 for a pair.

Almost forgot don't use the thread locker just safety wire them.

Thanks for the link, I appreciate the knowledge share! I'm not sure what you mean by "safely wire them". The fasteners are a female hex head cap screw, so they just get tightened with allen wrench or a male allen socket.

Those look like extra long wheel studs. Is the hat very thick?
I wonder if the brake and emergency brake caliper adapter (backing plate)
pushes out the wheel offset?
And emm, what wheels do you use?

There never was a catalog item for Brembos on a C4. It's a made up set to work for Callaway. The rear Brembo looks very similar to the Camaro caliper of today.
Could be made to work as an alternative it seems.

You just run the wire through the bolts so that one bolt cannot loosen without tightening the other. Use any 20 ga steel wire you can get the wire from Lowes or Home Depot.
Photo is not mine I just googled and used one that looked like what I had done.

The wheel studs are 3" long. I was wondering about the offset as well. I have and can run the stock rims on the back. On the front, I was given a set of 1/8" thick spacers to use with the stock rims. Although I can't figure out what they are for. The rim clears the calipers by far. All it does is push the wheel out farther away and in my opinion this places an extra load on the studs / bearings.
I also have a set of Fiske FM5 rims with Nitto NT01 tires. They are very nice!

Ok, I didn't want to embarrass myself by asking, but here goes...
Does anybody who has worked on these Brembo brakes have enough knowledge they could share some basic maintenance methods? I have bled the fluid this week, that was easy, I am not seeing how to change pads, and don't have a good feel for what correct torque values would be for the bolts that need to come apart.
I can disassemble everything and put it back together, but that isn't what is needed to change pads, etc. I'm open and appreciative of any guidance.

It's hard to believe the rear pads are worn out and need to be replaced - especially the parking brake pads. Anyhow, the only person who has that setup (that I know of) is Bill
Wenzel - his 95 was one of the earliest users of the Guido/Brembo setup on all 4 wheels.
The ones you have might be from Callaway instead but the idea is the same and I'd bet
there was only one maker of the mounting brackets.
PM me for Bill's email address. Between Bill and me, we should be able to answer your questions.
Cheers,
Glenn

The Brembo caliper is different from a stock set up it does not need to be removed to change the pads they will come out throught the top after you remove some screws. This is the case with the AP and Wilwood on our cars. It's very simple... post a picture of the caliper from the top. I'll pM you my phone number.
Your parking brake pads should be fine.

Thanks, I'll call and PM. Also to clarify the parking brake pads are fine. So are the others for now. I just want to know how to change the pads on the fly so when I'm at a HPDE or AX and something needs attention I'm not learning how to do it in the parking lot....
The FM5 rims are 17" OEM sizes.

Those front hubs are thick, they push the wheel outward to allow clearance for the caliper.
the wheels (depending on the wheel) will still fit under the fender

That was the issue when I had the Brembos. The hub was thick and moved the offset further out causing my Z06 wheels to extend beyond the fender opening.
The stock Z06 rotors rectified that.

Would you post up a pic of this brake setup front and rear under the Fikses? I am considering the same setup
