View Full Version : Need a new steering wheel

I sold my steering wheel so now I need to replace it. I'm looking for suggestions from the brotherhood. The car is a 95 black with black/red interior. I'm not concerned about the airbag just the horn. I would also like to do a quick disconnect while I'm at it. Thanks in advance for any help

Ricky..............my #1 mod brother,
I love Momo and you know what I went with (Competition) as well as quick release (NRT), etc.
I am recommending an Isotta wheel for you because I think I know your taste and what your future plans are for the future.
I hate the stock wheel like nothing else on the car and feel it belongs in a bus (on the 90at least).
Check out Crowder's Customizing since they have a huge selection, free shipping, and Jason Howard knows what he is talking about as to what works with what and the adapters, etc.
Here is a link to their offerings:
http://www.crowderscustomizing.com/Steering-Wheels-s/1961.htm
Take your time (I won't tell you how long it took me to decide......) and also consider with the quick release you can get 2 wheels for different look and driving situations/shows, etc. I imagine you want one 2 toned for the look you're after and another with bling for show only? Take care and best wishes......you Z if friggin awesome.
Aloha,
Craig

Sorry, I realize that Crowder's does not show all the Isotta wheels like they used to. You could contact Jason and maybe they are not dealing with them or just custom order because from Italy. Don't you have Italian blood? Just kidding. Anyway, they are nice wheels and check out the videos of the making and factory.......first class like everything you do.

Some nice wheels, I think which ever I decide will still have to be modified to go with my car. I plan on doing a complete interior upgrade over the winter months. As Craig has mentioned he and I
can never leave well enough alone lol. I will reach out to Jason at Crowders. Thanks Brother

-=JEFF=-,
I almost went with a two tone Isotta that was black/tan w/polished spokes and then settled for the more subtle Competition. I like your choice in the Nero though. What helped me was to feel all the different steering wheels too and fortunately I went to Tokyo Auto Salon so I could do that last Jan. If I get a chance later I can measure stock wheel, my Momo Competition is 13.5" to give you a comparison. It really makes the stock feel like for a bus driver and looks butt ugly in comparison. I also like the fact with these you can quick release it and it sure makes getting in and out easy, plus no putting weight on the column.

Yes, that is the wheel I have. Sorry, it is not mounted yet and won't be until around Nov when I finish school (been buried for the past year and a half working on another degree).
The stock wheel is 15" from outer diameter compared to 13.5" with the Nero and Competition. They have smaller, but I like this size and seems perfect. Best wishes.

I believe most Momo wheels are actually 350mm (13.8) diameter and if you liked the feel/control of the Momo and you were considering others that mention SAE dimensions you might want to shop 13 3/4. Is there a difference in actual feel? Some people do well with smaller diameter wheels and some after they spend time with them it becomes a nuisance. I know a couple that have made changes to steering wheels smaller in diameter but later changed back just for the feel.

That is what I thought all this time until I actually measured mine. Definitely no bigger than 13.5" so not sure where the 350mm comes from even though that is what they show as specs.

No - I've never seen or would expect to see one, the system that ignites and triggers them are very different among the manufacturers and then there's the "liability" issue!

That one is more for the original wheel.. I would longer something different. Besides I don't think my air bag would work in my car anyway.

-=JEFF=-,
I think that one for the 90-93 looks awesome in that custom original style from Europe. I think this is really one of those "Different Strokes for Different Folks" and we all have our own tastes and preference is all. I respect everyone's choice and decision and just feel that the OEM is a tad too big for me. Another thing to consider is calling Jason Howard at Crowder's about the short hub adapter. If you notice the depth of the OEM wheel you want to measure where you want your wheel to end up and with my NRG quick release and NRG short hub, plus the wheel, it is perfect where I want it. All of this is related to arm length, seating position, legs, etc. so each of us is different. You can make the measurements and calculate it with the specs from the pieces. Jason is very knowledgeable with what works with what and I went with NRG because you can bolt any brand wheel to it. I might buy another one later to change up the look and feel later. When I go to the next Tokyo Auto Salon, I will get another very nice wheel that I should have bought this year that was cheap for shipping the car (just in case it gets stolen once arrives out of the container in Hawaii). Another plus with quick release is the locking feature to the hub and another theft deterrent when there is no way to drive the car.:handshak:

In lieu of some pictures, this might give you an idea of an aftermarket steering wheel in our cars; this Sparco is a little bit smaller and it kind of tell what is needed to do the install:

thanks craig.. do you have the 350mm or 330mm? I measured my wheel, if I measure center to center of the wheel it is about 350mm. have you put your wheel up to OEM? it is smaller?
I remember some years ago I swapped a OEM wheel in my S10 for a Grant wheel, it was smaller but worked out well

Jeff,
It is a 350mm as ordered, but does not measure that to me. Disregard the hub adapter only showing to 1983 (not correct). I measured in inches and definitely smaller than OEM. My OEM does have a wheel skin on it as your does, I believe and that adds a little. I will take a picture later with the 350mm Momo as advertised on top of the OEM so you can see the difference.
Momo has some new wheels since. Did you see the Momo Commando in Red?
http://www.momousa.com/tuning/steering-wheels/commando-red.html
If you are looking for two tone they also have the Millenium, Devil, or Drifting in Red that is a little more subtle that you or Ricky might like. I really like the Millenium with a touch of red piping.
Here is what I ordered and prices with free shipping.

After taking more time to measure, I stand corrected and Momo specs are on the money at 350mm or 13.78 inch. I can't tell exactly what stock is with the wheel skin on and pretty thick. I would have to guess that there is about a 1" difference in overall diameter. It does not seem much, but I would not want to go smaller like someone else mention, or 330mm would be absolute minimum for me. I like this feel myself and I think I remember thinking a 330 is too small. The best is if you can drive a car that has a smaller wheel to see how you like it as I was able to. I really was sold on the quick release for sure and ease of getting in and out as well as the anti-theft factor. Sorry, I can't promise when I will have time to do the install, but will document and post it when I do.
The more I look at this one, I might buy it and sell my Competition or keep both to swap out easily:

Rick,
That sounds awesome and I think you found the perfect wheel for your bad ride. Today at the car show that I attended, there were quite a few cars with QR wheels and very cool. Sorry, I forgot to take photos of those to show you.

Some nice looking wheels here, might have to do something like that one of these days. What is the big deal about the QR hub? Is it really needed for something? Is it cheaper to go with a non QR mounting?

Hey Locobob,
No need for quick release and you can just get a standard hub to bolt the wheel to the column and it is cheaper without; I got a short hub due to QR and it brings the wheel back the almost the same location, if not then a standard hub. It seems the C4 guys mostly just replace the wheel w/o QR. IMHO the QR is just to make it easier to get in/out of our C4s, anti-theft, and cool factor is all. I think most don't want to do without the airbag and I can understand that too.

You guys need to hurry up and get those custom steering wheels on.... I have decided I'm going to do this too and I want to benefit from your experience :D Might go with the Commando for the D shape - tired of my knees hitting the wheel.
