I hear this aluminum flywheel saves about 15 hp loss.

Heard somewhere it's so lightweight that the tranny sounds horrible. Is this possible?

In some cases yes, in some no.....gear chatter is normal in the ZF. Not sure its the lightweight so much as the dampening effect of the dual mass which you lose

I have a DRM flywheel. The idle was tuned to 850 rpm. The chatter is hardly noticeable. But then again, my B&B is so loud, who knows. LOL

Seriously, the higher idle does help to quiet the chatter down.

i've heard rattles ranging from "you've got a lightweight in there?" to "yeah that sounds like a can of marbles" to "ummmm I think you're about to put a rod through the block"

I've heard a couple and found the sound annoying at idle.

The higher idle trick might fix that but otherwise not for me.

Suggest you listen to one and drive it if possible before
you put one in.

You can drive mine. 850 rpm idle and dead quite.

Just push in the clutch and the noise goes away. It is annoying at idle but she spins up real fast. As others have stated at higher idle the noise goes away.

Good advice. I have had a DRM, (Rippie), in mine for 15 years. The clatter at idle can be very obnoxious.
It doesn't hurt anything, and the performance improvement means it stays.

Henderson tune helps.

The rattle can be mitigated by the trans fluid used(BMW Castrol 10-60 in my case), use of a sprung hub clutch disk(LT-1), and tuning. On my car it is only audible at idle and then its not too intrusive until after some hot running. Not audible at all in cruise.

btw, I think its 15# less. Not sure it returns 15HP. It does reduce rotational mass. Someone told me its as if you remove 200# of dead weight since its riding at the crank.

Stock dual mass is around 40#.. Lightweight one is somewhere between 15-20#

Henderson tune helps.

It must. It was noisy until he tuned it. It is absolutely dead quite now.

Put it this way, When I bought the Purple Beast I thought the engine had a spun bearing. However, GC is correct push the clutch in and the noise goes away.

Stock dual mass is around 40#.. Lightweight one is somewhere between 15-20#13.5lbs to be exact. Another nice thing about a Fidanza is that the friction/clutch plate is replaceable on it so you don't have to buy another flywheel. Purdy nice.

Lots of things to think about.
Thanks for the feedback.

I agree w/ Dominic and others, but will add that after I installed my new injectors, the rattle dissappeared. This is mine idling with the Fidanza and sprung hub friction disc at about 850 rpm with the new injectors and Marc's tune (set there to accomodate the top end porting and sans SPTs).

Consider the fact that the "effective" 15 hp increase is due to the reduced rotating mass as a function of accelleration...typically measured in 4th gear at a 1:1 transmission gear ratio**. However, in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears the rate of rotational accelleration is considerably greater, and thus the value of "effective" rwhp due to (the Fidanza) would be considerably greater than 15 hp, especially in first gear! Compared to the lift I got from adding headers, the difference in accelleration I felt from hammering the gas in a lower gear was a lot more than the 20-25 hp lift I felt from the seat of the pants I got from the headers.

**typical of a 500 chp LT5/ZR-1 on an inertia (weighted drum) dyno, tested while running in 4th gear.

Nuttin like a 5-2 downshift at 45-50 mph and standing on the LT5 with the Fidanza to wipe the smirk off the faces of ricers and unwitting LSx shmart azzes  We're talkin significant "grin factor!"

The WAZOO guys installed a Fidanza flywheel in my car last year (thanks everyone!) and I've been extremely happy with it. The engine definitely spins up quicker and feels much more powerful. It's slightly harder to drive as it's a little more rev sensitive, but you get used to that in about 30 mins. It is louder, but only marginally so and not what I would call in any way objectionable and only noticeable if the car is out of gear with the clutch out - I don't spend a lot of time with the car in that state :)

Very happy with the mod.

Thanks for the info Guys.
Paul your car sounds great ...and Clean !!
I'm trying to do what I can myself before taking it to Pete for PP and cams. If I can get my exhaust and now a flywheel this summer It would be a step in the right direction.

You can't go wrong with Pete's porting and cams! I got the same and now I want even more power... It's addicting!

I have fidanza too and it's quiet but I have a balanced / blue printed transmission.

Having a Carolina stage 2 (sprung hub) clutch which helps.

Ill see if I can download a video audio of my Z @ idle
