It seems to me that when the 3.07 D44's became extinct some used the D36 with the 3.07 for the task. I recall it mentioned from time to time but I can't put my hands on anything that seems to be "first hand'. I don't believe it was here but who knows. Anyway, why NOT?
I'm not interested for myself but I picked up a D36 with fresh bearings and seals a "street rodder" had rebuilt professionally for a spare for his blown t-bucket. Such a short wheel-base I believe kept him from abusing the one in the car so it was never needed. They're very hard to "drive".
I believe Dave uses or originally planned on a 2.59 D36 for his Bonneville "project".
It seems a D36 with a machined spacer to compensate for the mass of the D44 would enable a person to use the present drive-shaft and c-beam.
Using a 315 tire or comparable a person would need a 36 tooth (likely) and a correct VSS. I have the "NOS" VSS required for a '90 and the 36 tooth driven I'd think shouldn't be a problem. The VSS for the '91+ is available I'd think also.
6K - 4th gear + 17 MPH (150 vs 133) 5th gear + 12 MPH (199 vs 177)
For a "serious" ORR guy with coil-overs the swap I wouldn't think that great of an effort.
Thoughts?
