My CDM tuner (that's what I believe it is called) is not working. I have had the head unit replaced once and all the speaker amps replaced, but I am thinking this old electronics should be replaced. I have looked at Crutchfield and see several nice units.

My question is:
Will these after market units fit into the 91 dash panel?
Will they use the Bose speakers?
Does the CDM tuner have to be working?

How tough is the retrofit?

Thanks for any advice.
Gary

Suggest you send it to Dr. Don and get it fixed up right. If your keeping the head unit, keep everything stock.

Will these after market units fit into the 91 dash panel? - single DIN will be smaller and reuire an adapter.
Will they use the Bose speakers? - you can. However, you need to splice in a interface made by an outfit like Metra.
Does the CDM tuner have to be working? - if you use a interface you do not need a CDM. If decide to stay with Bose let me know. I have a working CDM.

Thank you. I have another question:

Using the interface: Does that plug between the new radio and the CDM? Is it somewhat easy to accomplish?

I was looking at a jvc unit from Crutchfield. It was a double DIN. They claim it fits, with some cutting of an original support bracket.

It has a removable face, so my concern is will that be something I should consider, or just stay away from the removable face type?

You will need to increase the height of the opening on the radio bezel by roughly 3/16" or so.

It has a removable face, so my concern is will that be something I should consider, or just stay away from the removable face type?- it can be made to work either with or w/o removable face.

My questions are:

Will these after market units fit into the 91 dash panel? Some fit better than others however you radio is a true double DIN. You will need a Metra pocket install kit you basically throw away the pocket since your not installing a single DIN radio. In most cases you will need to cut the back plastic support that the back nut of the BOSE radio uses for support. Also some light sanding on the bezel surround may be required.

Will they use the Bose speakers? You can but you will need to buy the currect harness. Dont forget these are individually amplified and it might be a great time to perform an upgrade at this time.

Does the CDM tuner have to be working?
No since you upgrading to a new double DIN radio.

How tough is the retrofit?
If you have the parts, harness, mouting brackets its no harder than any other af radio installation.

Thanks for any advice.

Thank you for all the advice.
I have one question regarding the L98 and LT5 marking below the name. I have a LT5 but it states L98. Can that be changed?

It takes 100 posts to reach LT5 status with increasing status along the way.

On my 91 ZR-1, I installed a Pioneer Double Din 3300 with DVD player, back up camera, and many other amenities. It FITS! Did not even have to cut the outer bezel. The plastic pin that held the inner end of the Bose has to be trimmed out. Since the Bose speakers have their own amps, I replaced ALL the speakers and all the wiring. Took out the seats, cleaned and shampooed the 20 something year old carpet, and yes, it is a lot of work, but finally, a system that works.
