I am getting the radiator & thermostat replaced when car is apart. I was wondering if there was anything I should replace now as it is easy to get done. Repairs started at $8500 & so fa is up to $13,000, insured with Grundy Classic Ins so far they seem good to deal with. Thanks

Sorry about the damage, what a shame!

Replace your coolant hoses and maybe the fan. (Corvette recycling has it for $100)

How many miles on your Z?

I was following the wife to a resturant , she missed the turn & she turned left to go through the parking lot. I followed her but this light pole jumped out in front of me & BANG. I couldn't see the pole as it was hidden by the windshield post, basically I wasn't paying attention & it bit me. My buddy saw it at the last second & yelled but it was too late, so I blame him LOL There are 40,00 mi on the car. Get it fixed & move on.

rail looks tweaked alittle, so that means it got in the coolers and radiator, that starts to add up quick with RR time and parts cost, will also need to paint into the doors for blend; lights, hood costs, bumper, etc....

Who would be trusted to fix it? Surely not the average paint shop..

Any good body shop should be able to handle it....remember the factory paint tended to be less than perfect...

why not? it's just a car. I wouldn't trust it to midas but i'd probably take it a local dealer for work. maybe i'm lucky my local dealer has a good body shop

I guess I just get edgey when it comes to shops.. I had a couple of friends when growing up that worked at a dealership and they really gave cars that came in the repair shop a rough time ( test drives etc ) . They would see what the cars we're made of ( would they could handle ) . I'm sure its not every where but all it takes is 1 A hole. Before I left it I'd have a chat with the manager / owner.
I'd toss and turn if my z wasnt parked in the garage AND covered up. I tuck her in at nite.

Lorne as we talked about coolant hoses, oil cooler hoses, radiator thermostat, new cap/correct coolant, possible water pump, new headlights if broken(Hella?), any other ideas form the net?

So your friends were ******** when you were a kid so you assume all shops will take your car out and hot rod it?

you say that not all shops are like that, but in the same breath you say your edgy about bringing it to shops, so you don't trust shops.

I am just wondering If you brought it to me to have it repaired at my shop what kind of a talk would you have with me.

I plan to have my own shop once I get done in Afghanistan, Mostly finishing up failed restorations and selling the cars.

So again I am wondering what kind of a talk we would have you know just help me out because I will be dealing with the public for real when I am doing this.

Theres always an A hole somewhere , SO yea we'd have a talk . and I'd check out your shop and whats working in it. I've even read post on here about being careful about letting dealers work on our rides and learn to do what we can for ourselves. Do you think everywhere you go that someone is going to respect your car as much as you do??? ReallY ???????

10-80-10 rule; 10% of the shops out there are exceptionally good 80% do a really solid work and 10% are bad. I have found that applies to about and product, employee pools, etc

That logic seems pretty sound to me.

How about this - 20% of the shops do good work 80% of the time. The other 80% of the shops do good work 20% of the time.

I've worked in service for several dealers in the past (as a tech not a writer) and I would venture to say that generally speaking we took pretty good care of the customers car. That's not to say you can't find video on You Tube of punk kids trashing SS Camaro's and Shelby's but I really do think those are anomolies. I would trust a dealer before I would trust any other shop that I did not have prior experience with or a good recommendation. The problem is I'm just not convinced the current dealership network knows these cars anymore.

At this point, I would rather transport my Z to either Corey (who's 4 1/2 hours away) or if need be I'd send it to Chicago before I would drop it off somewhere I was unfamiliar with. At least then I know it's being worked on by people who know this car better than I do and care about this car at least as much.

IMHO - that's worth the cost of a transport. Plus it gives me a good excuse for a road trip when it's ready to pick up!

Ditto Fully Vetted Your right , That why when I get ready to do the engine work its headed to Pete.. I'd say Marc and Jerry are also with the program.. I'm sure there are also others here on the site. ( I would trust people here ) ( that are known ) rather than take a chance anywhere else..JMO .. Now if it was just some old truck or camaro I'd gamble but not with a ZR1 and what it cost for parts etc..

We rely on Corey, Pete, Marc and Jerry (no particular order) more then we could express. However, there are several on this board that contribute an unbelievable amount ofvknowledge based on their own experiences and builds. They just don't do it for a living.

Guys like Brett, Cliff and Hib just to name a few have shared a tremendous amount of research, trial and error and knowledge.

Thanks to all of you for helping some of us dimwhits live out our dream.

Last time I took a car to the dealer(05 GT Mustang Convertible), got it back with 100 more miles on it and both back tires were cooked off of it with rubber boogers all over both quarter panels and under the wheel wells. Took the car in with 1,700 miles, got it back with 1,805 miles on it.

Dealer bought me new tires, Ford had to buy it back after that. Had the snot ran out of it.

Ask me what I think about dealers!
