I might be wrong, but I am wondering if it was a housefire; in order for the heat to melt the rims and intake it would need something to hold the heat in like the structure of the home....oven effect

Our 1st 89 and 1st GS looked like that if not worse (melted rear & ZF) from a house fire. Not even a VIN plate was left.

Really! What could there possilby be left that is of any value?
I have to believe that even the frame would be distorted with all that heat.

I bet the aluminum in the engine is worth a good bit. Depending on what type of AL, it goes from $.53-$1.35/lb. Steel is less, but still worth something scrapped. There's machines that shred an entire car and separate all the plastic, metal, and whatever is else is in there (saw it on Modern Marvels) to be recycled.

you guys understand that this is where all salvage cars go.. the insurance companies put them up for sale.
Someone will buy it just to scrap it.

Is the $21k price tax the price the insurance paid out on this claim / the current value? ---

the value stated is the ACV put in by the carrier, it is possible that loss was settled for more.
