I'm in with a reservation and am staying at a Hampton Inn. Will drive the ZR-1 up the 5th from Chester, Va.....the Metro Richmond area.... and home the 7th probably the same way.

In case anyone wants to "caravan" I'm taking a sort of scenic drive from my area which adds about 75 miles or so to my drive by going west to the mountains before turning north.

I will leave mid morning, assuming it's decent weather, the metro Richmond area from Midlothian on route 60 going West to Amherst, Va. which is about an hour and a half or so and just beyond until I hit the junction to go North on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Going up into the BRP area rte 60 is a windy two lane scenic road and this is all country once you are outside metro Richmond, flat piedmont rising to the Blue Ridge. Once on the Blue Ridge Parkway whose speed limit is technically 45 mph I'll head north for about 50 miles along the road which is roughly the spine of the mountains plus or minus a little to Waynesboro, Va. then get off on I 64 and go briefly W. to I 81 then turn north again and take I 81 all the way into Carlisle. My drive will be about 5 or 6 hours and I'd rather do this than head up to DC and the I95 traffic and angling over nw from DC and on to Carlisle which would be a shorter drive but much less scenic with more traffic congestion. This is at least the scenic route considering where I live.

If anyone going has a tangent that intersects with this and wants to do any or all of it with me let me know here or pm and I'll adjust my driving time to be at whatever tangent point you want to meet at. I've done the B.R.P. in my '76 before and it's pleasant. I 81 N. of Waynesboro is typical interstate. I could continue in the mountains from Waynesboro and take the Skyline Drive's 106 miles n. to Front Royal but it's 35 mph speed limit and a bit too slow for my tastes having done that before as well. Might be nice enough that time of year to keep the Targa top off and the windows up and enjoy nature a little. Some views of the Shenandoah valley are quite pretty.

LancePearson
02-27-2013, 09:03 AM
Here are a couple photos from the prior Skyline Drive with my other red 76...it's pretty up there and they don't call it the "blue ridge" for nothing...when you look out from the mountains spines towards either the piedmont of the Shenandoah Valley the air often has a bluish cast to it and it is very peaceful looking.....scenic!

I'm planning on leaving Chester, Va. Friday morning around ten or so in the rain and driving out I64 W. through Waynesboro to I 81 then N. on I 81 to Carlisle for the night. I have a stop to make visiting with a friend around noon in Charlottesville for lunch then will head on up to Carlisle.

On the way home Sunday I plan to pull the Targa and drive down I 81 to Waynesboro then skip onto the blue ridge parkway and drive it 50 miles south to Buena Vista area then head east on route 60 to the Richmond area on a nicer weather day.

Anyone going that way let me know and I'll adjust to match and go in convoy.

Thanks, Kevin. My son is a grad so I'm familiar. I'm actually stopping at exit 114 which is Ivey, Va. and my friends live on some acreage outside town so it should be okay. Will watch the weather driving over the mountains as that stretch to Waynesboro includes some sometimes foggy patches and the Goodyears on mine are great for dry or rainy but absolutely suck on anything slick like snow or ice.

Anyone coming from the east that is interested in meeting and doing the last hour together, I am going to pick up my brother at the Turkey Hill just off Exit 286 of the PA TPK. It's the Reading 222 exit. When you get off that exit and go through the toll booths, go under 222 stay on that road to the Turkey Hill. It's about a mile from the toll, Turkey Hill will be on your left a Comfort Inn will be on the right.

I'm thinking of meeting there at 7AM, anyone interested?

I'm moving the meet time at Turkey Hill to 8AM.
The time I have to leave to make 7AM is just too damn early.
We'll be at Carlisle by 9 - 9:15AM

All I can say is OMG!! Seems like it has been a long winter but the first event of the season was one of the best!! Thanks to David for setting it up, Lance1 for recording it in pictures, Lance2 for allowing us to take over his yard and garages, Charlie for the excellent BBQ, Darrin for supplying the muscle, and everyone else involved. It is on my short list of 'The Best Car Things I Have Done'. This event just goes to prove 'The friendliest people in the world are brought together with ZR-1 magic!'

WOW, what a collection and a true honor to be able to see these historic vehicles in person, many have done battle and left their mark well established in automotive racing history!

Lance Miller is a Class guy that continues to carry the Torch his dad Chip Miller lit many moons ago.

Lance, your father would surely would be proud that you carry on his legacy and passion for the hobby and as you said "Apples Don't fall far from the trees".

As fellow enthusiasts, we too are proud and thankful as well for what you do for the hobby.

Thanks for putting up with us for the day and I'm sure the "Drool" marks on the floor will clean up easily if you scrub real hard!

Thanks again.:flag:

The event went well and thanks to David and others for organizing it. I did take about 150 photos with a good Nikon and they are now in three albums on Photobucket you can peruse. One is Wazoo replacing Lance Miller's ZR-1 injectors, another is the general photos including the pro's detailing a car and someone who trucked in a Z on a frame minus seats and body and the car collection with its excellent cars, my fav, the little 1954 Cherry Corvette. I'll also attach a link to the third album which when I went home to Virginia I drove my red/red down 100 miles of the Blue Ridge Mountains and about 350 or so curves slightly more aggressively than the law allows on a sunny day. You might not be so interested in that but it's here if you want to see the car on the drive. I have a dozen photos of the various license plates from the many states who were represented as well but don't as a practice post other's license plates for confidentiality reasons. You will enjoy the black Z from Florida as he took it off the trailer in the hotel parking lot to attend while wife and child snoozed away. The young daughter made up for it in Laps around the Miller patio at lunch when they joined. Great event.

What an event!
Big thanks to Lance M for being such a gracious host and a great big "well done" to David for setting it up. Not to forget - "thank you" to Darin, Rich and others who pitched in to be the point men of goodwill and turn wrenches.
Also, thank you Lance for documenting the event.
It was great to make new friends and see old friends. Only thing missing - Skipper...

Almost forgot! - thank you for a great (actually two) BBQ sandwitches Charlie!
