Last year I had oil cooler adapter plate custom CNC'ed in aluminum and black anodized so that I can fabricate a SS braided oil cooler line like Jeffevette sold a few years ago. It didn't make any sense to CNC 1 piece so I ended up with a few extra. Well, Goldcyclone got my keen interest in CF interior pieces so I am thinking about financing this by turning extra CNC pieces to good use.
I am thinking $270 as pictured including shipping.
If I see interest I will do a batch of 6 this time around.
Any interest?

Any chance we could choose a different color other than black or due to the location is black really the only color that makes sense?

Only difference is that Jeffvette used NTP fittings into the plate but I am using M16x1.5 straight thread w/ "O" rings - cleaner where the fitting meets the plate.

1. Use two 10 AN Stainless Steel Braided hose.
2. Use two AQP Hose, 90 Degree, -10 AN Hose to Female -10 AN, Aluminum, Nickel Plated.
3. Use two AQP Hose, 45 Degree, -10 AN Hose to Female -10 AN, Aluminum, Nickel Plated.
4. Use two 10 AN M18x1.5 fittings threaded into the Aluminum adapter manifold with "0"rings.
5. One 6mm x 1.0 x 35 mm SS Allen head bolt.
6. One 6 mm SS washer.
7. Two "O" rings for the Aluminum adapter manifold to oil cooler interface.

The first four items can be found at Summit Racing.

Dynomite,

May be it was M18... My memory isn't what it use to be. If so, I'll have to return and order new.
Did I send you that pic?

secondchance
02-22-2013, 08:27 AM
I took the picture of my own hose fabrication ;)
Without checking I got M16 from Summit Racing (http://www.summitracing.com/) including the Aeroquip fittings. I ended up with M18x1.5.

I did not want to INSIST on that M16/M18 issue as I sometimes am wrong even though I am positive I am right.

By the way...that is why I post technical stuff so often.....as a sanity check and confirmation. I figure if no one says anything I must be correct :D

Appreciate that Black ZR-1 flange....excellent work

I use a Small Angle Grinder for cutting the SS Braided Hose which does not fray the SS braids on the hose ends. I also use an appropriate size Box Wrench on the Hose Fittings (box end) to minimize leaving marks on the fittings.

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll142/dynomite007/Maintenance%20ZR1/8ddc4dc6-297b-40b9-a1a9-12d5ca7baf00.jpg

Note:
Unless you are making up several SS hoses it is much cheaper to just let someone else do it like secondchance (there are some tricks) :p

Dynomite,

You are correct - fittings I need are M18x1.5-10AN and not M16. I am exchanging messages with the seller (in Hong Kong) so that I can bring the correct ones and not get stuck w/ $150 dollars woth fittings I have no use for.
I use a scissor cutter meant for braided line - sotrta looks like a bolt cutter. I tried using a hack saw at first and learned a hard way.

Update:

Started assembly on Monday - real pain to assemble hoses to AN fittings. My entire right side from shoulder to the wrist is in pain after assembling 5 top hoses.

Also, only 7 of 14 45 degree elbows showed up. Evidently we are having a national shortage of Aeroquip FCE4024s!
Ended up ordering 2 from there, another 2 from Amazon and another 3 from Eb*y. Finally odered all pieces. Should be here by Tuesday.

Fittings between the plate and 90 degree elbows I ordered were wrong (thanks for heads up, Dynomite). Correct sizes should be here by Friday.

I am working on it but I need at least 2-3 days to get my strength back.
I will post and let all know when 7 sets are complete.

Thanks.

Thought I would ask ;)

OK......by PM....no more being fabricated by secondchance but the secondchance design of the Oil Cooler Hose Adapter shown below is the CATS MEOW for sure.:thumbsup:

Aluminum plate was Cadded using factory piece then modified to accept M18X1.5 threaded with AN10 Flare fitting.
Then the pieces were engraved (ZR-1) and black anodized.

OK......by PM....no more being fabricated by secondchance but the secondchance design of the Oil Cooler Hose Adapter shown below is the CATS MEOW for sure.:thumbsup:

Parts Required for SS Braided Oil Cooler Lines.

The SS Oil Cooler Lines are very easy to make up in SS Braided hose using Aeroquip reusable fittings and SS Braided hose available from Summit Racing (http://www.summitracing.com/).

1. Use two 10 AN Stainless Steel Braided hose.
2. use two Aeroquip Reusable Hose Ends, 90 Degree, -10 AN Hose to Female -10 AN, Aluminum, Nickel Plated.
3. Use two Aeroquip Reusable Hose Ends, 45 Degree, -10 AN Hose to Female -10 AN, Aluminum, Nickel Plated.
4. Use two Stat-O-Seal, 5/8 in Inside Diameter, Aluminum with O-Ring.
Or in this case with the secondchance design just one "O" ring on each 10AN Flare fitting with 18x1.5 thread.
5. Use two M18x1.5 by 10AN Flare fittings threaded into the Aluminum adapter manifold.
6. One 6mm x 1.0 x 35 mm SS Allen head bolt.
7. One 6 mm SS washer.
8. Two "O" rings for the Aluminum adapter manifold to oil cooler interface.

The first five items can be found at Summit Racing (http://www.summitracing.com/).

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll142/dynomite007/C%20Engine%20LT5/57127474-9952-481a-9e68-32884e074fb9.jpg

I have never had one of these hydraulic lines with Aeroquip Reusable Fittings leak and they are much much tougher than original crimped fittings and easily replaced or adjusted if you want to at some point make them longer or shorter (the fittings are reusable). And......you will find a much better routing of the lines if you make them yourself by looking at the routing of the existing Hydraulic Lines. The Aeroquip Reusable Fittings come in all sizes and angles to fit any situation. You can make your own oil cooler lines as shown here and Power Steering Lines or any other hydraulic line you might need on the ZR-1.

Cliff, I need 5 or 6 myself.

I am assuming you are talking the adapter shown only?

I could use a couple Oil Cooler Adapters myself but as you probably know, Jerry and White Racing make and sell the complete set of SS Braided Oil Cooler Lines (crimped fittings) including the hoses already assembled with the adapter (but not the Adapter separate). Jerry's Adapters are a one piece adapter which Adapters discussed in this thread are taken from the original Jeffvette designed three piece with the two threaded nipples separate. The SS hoses in this thread are designed using Reusable Aeroquip type fittings. The three piece adapters are the Cats Meow

Very few guys would make their own SS Braided hoses with reusable fittings although all it requires is a vice and couple crescent wrenches. An angle grinder with cut off wheel is perfect for cutting the SS Braided hoses but you can use a hacksaw ;)

Carter is aware in 2008 and it appears he declined machining the Oil Cooler Adapter back then LT5 Oil Cooler Adapter (http://zr1.net/forum/showthread.php?p=34637)

We shall see but I do know the secondchance design is the best

What are bumber moldings? I got confused ;)

OK......in 2008 going back in that thread (as indicated in Below quote from that thread).............I think you said you would make Oil Cooler Adapters for $85.......so that is where we are ($850 shipped for ten Oil Cooler Adapters in 2008) ;)

Send me a sample and I'll make them for $85 shipped in the US. Most everyone on the forum knows my quality of work. Take care, Carter .......don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to undercut anyone just trying to give another avenue for these items after the 5 pieces are sold.

Again...the unique aspect of making your own fabricated SS Oil Cooler Hoses and Fittings is that all other components (other than the Oil Cooler Adapter) are available at Summit Racing.

Definitely NOT a Big Demand for SS Oil Cooler Hoses.......or at least NOT a Big Demand for making your own SS Oil Cooler Hoses.

Most guys would prefer to just buy a complete prefabricated set of SS Oil Cooler Hoses WITH Adapter rather than save some dollars making your own with the possibility of messing up and having to do it twice. There are some little tricks and one would have to watch a video to learn how to make your own hydraulic hoses correctly using reusable fittings the first try :sign10:

There is one benefit having your own SS Oil Cooler Hose System. Once in a while the original Oil Cooler hoses/swedged fittings develop Leaks. You then have to by a whole New or Used Oil Cooler Hose System which may start out at $180 used. With the SS Oil Cooler Hoses (especially if you fabricate them yourself)......leaks can easily be repaired by replacing the leaking component (Which I do not see that any oil leaks will ever develop with the SS Oil Cooler Hose System if assembled correctly with Re-usable fittings). I have never seen an oil leak in a hydraulic hose using Aeroquip reusable fittings.

O-rings go on the adapter to oil cooler side so only 2 needed as I stated.

The AN fittings are pipe fitting thread ended so no washer needed.

For you guys and gals that are skeered of making your own SS Braided Oil Cooler Lines.........This Link makes it a 30 minute job :-D

SS Braided Oil Cooler Hoses and Fittings (http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c4-zr-1-discussion/3005470-tech-info-lt5-modifications-rebuild-tricks-500-hp-7.html#post1584987845)

These SS Braided Oil Cooler Assemblies are the Real Thing with Nickel Plated Aluminum Aeroquip Reusable Swivel Fittings. There are reusable fittings available that are less expensive.

Getting a quote on the blocks right now.

Once you get the block in hand....it is a LOT easier to make up the SS Braided Hoses to proper length by installing one made up end (with the 45 degree fittings) first onto the Oil Filter Adapter (finger tight). Then Cut (where shown in photo by red lines A and B) and Assemble (with fittings) the other end.

Once the hose sets are made up, attach hoses to Oil Cooler Adapter in hand (in vice). Tighten hose fittings at the approximate angles shown. Then after the Oil Cooler Adapter fittings are tight, attach the SS Braided Hose Assemblies to the Oil Filter Adapter. Lastly......insert the Oil Cooler Adapter with fittings attached and tight onto the Oil Cooler and insert/tighten the SS Allen Head 6 mm x35 mm bolt. Do NOT forget the two "O" rings on the Oil Cooler Adapter between the Adapter and Oil Cooler.

No modifications of the Fiberglass Radiator Housing is required.
I know I am overdoing this but it really is slick and easy and sooooo much fun. NO MORE LEAKS of any kind associated with the Oil Cooler Hoses. Less expensive Reusable fittings are available rather than the more expensive Aeroquip Fittings. The Aeroquip Fittings are Swivel so self aligning when installing.

Now....once you get these SS Braided Oil Cooler Hoses made up with Aeroquip Reusable Swivel Nickel Plated fittings.......Install that Oil Catch Can also using SS Braided Aeroquip Reusable Swivel Fittings :p

To remove existing 12AN x 3/4 NPT fittings from the Oil Filter Housing use a 1 inch box wrench (combination box/open end) with the box end on the fitting interlocked with a 3/4 inch box wrench on the other end. This will provide the leverage/torque without excessive horizontal pressure to remove the fittings. I use permatex when installing the New 10AN x 3/4 inch NPT fittings into the Oil Filter Adapter (lower fitting first).
Let the ZR-1 sit over night before removing the existing Oil Cooler Hoses to minimize oil spilling.

Another Cat's Meow is Phil's (Jagdpanzer) Improved Fuel Pressure Regulator

http://i540.photobucket.com/albums/gg333/pwasinger/IMG_1199_zpst72m6f8w.jpg

I can now remove fuel pressure regulator in 2 minutes.
I can remove a plenum in 10 min and a that means a starter can be removed in 15 min and Alternator in 15 min :sign10:

Can change oil filter in 1 min

Now.......what other car can you do maintenance that quickly.

I noticed the other day, I have a leak in either a fitting or the oiler hoses. Jerry will be getting a call from me soon, as I should just change them out. Does one need to drain the cooler oil or can you get around that?

Simple, easy way is to load up below the fittings (motor and cooler side) with old towels. I'm not sure if there is a drain plug for the oil cooler and, even if there is, wouldn't take a chance with the plug after 23 - 28 years.

There is a cooler plug on the left side of the cooler there is a hole in the plastic I got mine out easy as putting it back in was a little harder as it is on a angle above the steel frame under the front just be careful doing it back up I noticed my plug looks like it might go thought into the cooler

You do not have to drain any oil. Let the Z sit over night and then do what you want with oil cooler hoses or oil filter. you might stuff a rag or two under the fittings.
