Tires and Snow

I just took my 91 out of the garage this morning to photograph it in the light snow of the front yard at 19 degrees F. I took it down the driveway and around the block after. The great Goodyear Eagle F1 tires on it which work so well on dry or wet roads and at speed just make you laugh when packed snow is involved.

How do we spell exactly what you'd expect, worthless at snow traction?

As expected but it takes nothing to lose traction with them on dry, day old snow.

Last year I took the Z out after a 2" dusting of snow. Pulled to a stop sign and got stuck , then no gas pedal totally stopped......slid right off the crown of the road.

Frank, I was just in my neighborhood with no other cars around and if I had to stop it was problematical that I could...I got back up the driveway okay though the rear end did a sashay on the 3% slope up on the way in as fast as I could. Not a good idea to drive mine on snow completely apart from the engine's power. Just zero traction.

Crowned road would have done the same thing, just slid.

My car has never been a slow plow (with the air dam), but it has been in the rain MANY times....

Trust me, it doesn't melt!

SNOW? Is that the white stuff that sort of looks like blowing sand? But sticks to everything and then gets wet and makes mud? :-D

In Fahrenheit it was 62 last night and almost 80 today. But lets not compare July temperatures.

Great minds think alike, Lance. I took mine out in the 20* weather with a dusting of snow. I won't leave my 500' driveway due to salt on the road though. I launched it on the snow pack and almost completed a bat turn ;-)

Sad, but true...I've driven my Z one (1) time...and it rained. Currently driving up-armoured SUV's in the snow of Kabul. Z's in the barn for the year until I redeploy...but at least I know it's there waiting! Tschuss!

I went to a company dinner on evening, and decided to take the 95 Vette. After dinner I came out to find the "flurries" that weren't suppose to be coming until much later were 2" thick, and coming fast! But, I digress...

I had BFG KDs on it and by tip-toeing around all was OK, until I got out in the country (where I live). There was a stiff cross-wind, and tho I was rolling along in second gear several times wind gusts would hit the side, and slippery as the Vette is, the combination of the crown on the road and side force had me sliding to the edge of the road several times as I fought to keep 'er pointed toward the crest in the center of the road. It was a black car, but my knuckles were white as the snow!

Now Bob G uses a C6 as his DD in Chicago. I've seen that car covered with frozen slush and dried salt. I wonder what tires he was using (I didn't think to ask).

Wanna feel like you have 500 hp.....when you don't:p....Here's the skinny on that:
Have a set of GS-D3's
Wait for a bright, clear, cold day. Air temp should be about 35*F.
Find a concrete interstate. Just a cold road & day, no snow needed!
Do 60mph, drop down to second from 5th or 6th & stand on the gas.....and have a good laugh!

It will work on asphalt also, but it sounds better on concrete!:sign10:

I got caught in snow flurries in my Z once. It was 12/05 & my corvette buddies organized a run down to Kerbeck on a Saturday as one of the guys was picking up his brand new C6 vert.

Lance, do you have the top off in those pics ??

Yes, I do. It's in the back, clipped in place, the bronze top. the red lined top is upstairs in my studio stored. I live in what is normally a fairly temperate part of the country in central Virginia and since I'm 6'4" tall, getting in and out is simpler with the top out. It works fine with the top on and if it rains I can but I don't drive it in the rain and tend to drive only on sunny days either of my two vettes, the 91 Z or the 76 stock l48 four speed. If you run the windows up and put a little heat on your feet, wear a neck scarf the car stays pretty warm driving it down to around 50 or so on sunny days with the top out. I hope to drive it to the gathering in May with the top out though I can do it either way. Drove it home from Atlanta in Dec. when I bought it with the top on. The 76 has got its tan flannel dust cover on it now. Actually, today will be 64 and sunny from mid day on here and 73 tomorrow but rain maybe then. I plan at 11:30 to head out to my 90 mile "course" around one side of the James River on two lane twisties towards the Jamestown Ferry, cross on the ferry which is free, then come home on a two lane twisty that parallels the south side of the river. Cyclists call it the nickel and dime tour as it's state routes 5 and 10. I sold my cycle a week ago as I wasn't riding it and keeping my skills up. Down to a flying scot 19' sailboat on a trailer, two vettes, a 16' ocean kayak on trailer and a trek bicycle. More than enough toys for someone my age to try and use. I have no other responsibilities in life other than my two greyhounds who aren't allowed in either vette. Don't know how I'd fit them or keep them in while driving anyway much less their claws on leather.
