View Full Version : Weepy Hose?

I am in the process of changing the oil cooler lines and noticed a small amount of coolant on the cross member near/under the engine coolant hose. I have not noticed any significant loss of coolant. Is it possible for these hoses to "weep" through? These appear to be all original hoses on a '90 with 29K miles. This looks to be a tough job since I cant even see the clamp on the engine side of that hose.

Check your water pump the bolts tend to loosen up over time its also possible your water pump is leaking out the weep hole on the underside. Tighten the Water pump first.

As to hoses weaping anything is possible but im betting on the water pump as the issue as it is catching in the crossmember. GC

No....the hoses do not weep through.

You have to tighten the hose clamps but when you are doing that, I would just replace the hoses (I use permatex sealant on all hoses except SAMCO hoses) and place all clamps so the tightening screws are accessable once all the other engine parts are installed. Use NAPA 1825M coolant (http://www.zr1.net/forum/showthread.php?p=103271#post103271)

Could also be water pump gasket or water pump shaft leak. Tightening water pump bolts often cures that issue unless it is the water pump shaft (rare).

With that many low miles he prob still has the Spring clamps so tighening down wont be an option.

Yep, spring type clamps. With the oil leak from those lines, it's a bit of a mess. I'll try to do a little clean up first then check the pump bolts.

Not likely the water pump shaft, probably the shaft seal.
Same difference. When the shaft goes is howls and/or makes noise.

Wishing it's the hoses or spring clamps on the hose is wishful thinking maybe. But I hope it's that simple.

No noise that I can tell.

So.....since hose is off and therefore coolant is out.....:D

The hose is not off yet. I assume though your suggestion would be to replace all???? UGH!!!

Its a while you are there suggestion. Its not so much the mileage but the age of the hoses. Serp belt is also a good idea. A lot of us have moved on to the Samco silicone hoses but thats the owners choice.

Yeah its a real mess with those oil cooler lines. Dont fret PM is always worth the effort!!!

Not just yet. I went ahead with the oil cooler line replacement and that went well but need to order a full set of coolant hoses. I figure if I'm going that far, makes sense to replace em' all. I'll probably go with Samco.
I still have a lot of greasy mess to clean up from the oil leakage.
I must admit, it looks like a pretty tough job to get to all of those water pump bolts. I'm somewhat of a novice mechanic but pretty sure I'm up for it. At least I have a nice heated garage.
Thanks for checking in. I'll keep you posted.
