Hi Lee-- I know you like to do things yourself, but don't you know some good window glass people who could come to your house and do it? I doubt it would be too expensive and it is tricky to do right without breaking the glass....Bob

The glass on my 87 is toast, the glass w/install is cheap; $193, the trim piece is the problem. The process for removal is to just compromise the trim....takes too long to get it off undamaged and they lose outdue to labor cost. Trim piece is $250
I do work in ins bob, but in todays day and age if I even work with a vendor who I have a business relationship with ......I can lose my job. So I steer clear of asking for favors, etc...our company is tough on ethics and even perceived improper relationships are grounds for dismissal. I have to sign an agreemnet to that effect once per year.

You mention trim piece@ $250 - I don't follow that.
Your concern is saving the three reveal moldings? The three reveal moldings aren't difficult to save and Rich "Scrrem" had his reveal moldings I believe powder coated before the new install. He of course had a new header/pillar weatherstrip for the install. Your attempt isn't to save the weatherstrip? He did his this past summer and would certainly recall his experience. I'm sure he likely did the removal of the reveal moldings. If I were doing one I'd do that myself also.
Jeff "Z51JEFF" did his '84MY and his removal was to an "extreme" and it's documented with snapshots.
"Scrrem" is is most recent "Z51JEFF" for a documentation.

Lee, you just need to et all of the trim screwes loose. After that, use a good thin paint scraper and a windshield knife to cut the butyl. You can get the trim off without bending it up.
I sandblasted and PC'd my trim on EX5023. I think I may have another set of PC'd trim on the shelf.

I assumed you'd stop by so I didn't include you in my post. I expected that both might have snapshots for Lee's "consumption"!!

LOL
I didn't do a pictorial, unfortunately. I was "speed building" in order to get EX5023 to Bowling Green in one piece.

Hey Lee,
The trim comes off pretty easy, just need to make note of where all the screws come out and put them back in the same place. When I had my windshield replaced I had the shop remove and re-install the trim, big mistake!! They used so much sealer and gooop, it looked horrible. It had so much goop, I distroyed the trim getting it off. Luckly I found a repacement set of trim and took it out and had it power coated and re-instaled myself, looked much better. I didn't do a good job of taking pics but did shoot some of the trim, I can certinly send you what I have. PM me your email address.

Lee,
The trim can be removed without damage if one is very careful. You could remove the weatherstrip and then the trim yourself. Then let a glass specialist install the glass. Like Scrrem say's you can probably do a better job of installing the weatherstrip than some glass installers.
Keep in mind, handling glass is totally unforgiving. Been there done that. Leave it to an experienced person that is also responsible for breakage.

Yes,Ive done it.Would rather have root canals done in ALL my teeth before I do it again. The trim needs to be removed with lacquer thinner. With a small squirt bottle get some lacquer thinner between the 2 pieces, trim and retainer and gently pull then apart. The dash pad needs to come out of the car,87 might be the same as 84.Theres screws along the top bottom edge in the middle under the radio bezel. There 2 screws at the defroster bezel and a few more I cant remember. The dash pad slides out but the steering wheel is in the way so its going to need to be lowered,Ive been told the dropping the wheel isnt necessary but I dont see how the dash will come out with it in place.Onto the windshield removal. This trim when you could buy it was at least $800 for the 3 pieces. The bad thing here about using a used set of trim, the holes in the a pillar were drilled when the trim was installed so anybody using a used set of trim will end up with extra holes.I have one NOS piece of trim, driver side is anybody needs it.Now,when I pulled the windshield out of this 84 I was really surprised to find rust on the windshield frame in a car thats been in Ca its whole life. The frame in these cars were galvanized from what I understand, nick the coating and you get rust issues.

If Marc does not do it himself.....I am NOT doing it myself :p
Absolutely right!! Have the pro's set the windshield and re-install the trim youself. My shop are so concerned that the windshield does not leak, they go crazy with the RTV.
Lee, I'll send you my pics this evening when I get home from work.

Sounds like a very good reason not to do it my suggested way!! --Bob
