This is definitely a newb question, but I am curious why the engine says "4 cam" , but I always see people refer to this engine as DOHC ( dual overhead cam ). Dual = 2 ... see my confusion? HAHAH
I am sure there is an easy answer, thanks for the time and help ... I will be researching a lot when the holidays pass , right now work is SLAMMED!!! :saluting: ---

Is that typical of the DOHC engines to have 2 per head, not just 2 per engine?
Thanks :) ---

That's what DOHC means - Dual Over-head Cam - 2 cams "over" the head. If it were an inline engine it could still be DOHC and only have 2 cams, on a V - 2 heads, 2 cams per head i.e. 4
If an engine only had one came per head it would be a SOHC - Single overhead cam engine. This was the set up on the Jaguar V12 for example which the LT5 designers "borrowed" quite a bit from.

If memory serves when I was in the Cop business it was radio code for Drunk or under the influence but not violent. Perhaps he is making a play on words that he likes the sauce a bit? ;)

It's all over my head :-D
Conventions are like that. They may be obtuse but many are.
I'd like to meet and talk to the guy that decided Feb gets 28 or 29 days but other months have 31. You'd think they'd be split differently.
Ah, conventions. I would have made it
DOCC - double over cylinder cam
or
QTCC - quad total cam count
or
THFC - two heads four cams
or

Does that mean Bugatti W16 motor would have 8 cams? - 2 cams per head and 4 heads?
Should we call this OCQH - Octa Cam Quad Heads?

It would still be DOHC. Two cams per head. I don't think anything has been made in the auto industry that was more than two cams per head, I think some planes experimented with three.

Jay leno put a 427 SOHC from the 60s into a Cobra replica.

Ah, ha! My new screen saver!!! Can't wait to do mine. I'll be collecting parts during 2013 for a 013-014 build.

I made the mistake of driving Pete's car, right after I got my 500 package running. I almost wanted to tear it apart again and add some cams...It just never ends!
Bob G said if I drove his car, I'd prolly have to mortgage the house. I'll make a point NOT to do that any time soon!:)
I envy you tho! (If I had your tallent, I'd burn mine!)

You have low expectations. LOL
My car has cams and is a blast to drive. I just want mine to be a litle more exclusive, I guess??? Not really sure why I want to do it. Not a cheap whim.
My motor was just a temporary thing, in my mind. The bottom end has more miles than the car. I want to use my #'s matching block, so I figure "what the hell", might as well collect parts and build a 427. I like the sound of it. Pete's doing the work (his talent).
I just get to pay for it.......:o
Chevrolet also did a chain driven SOHC 427 BBC test engine back in 1964/65 that ran 12.5:1 compression and it made 660hp at 6800rpm and 532lb/ft torque at 4000rpm.
They also did a pushrod 427 with hemispherical heads that ran an 11.3:1 cr and made 628hp at 6400rpm and 552 lb/ft torque at 4400rpm.
These engine were strictly testbeds to see what output was possible from 427 cubes. From this period the L-88 and ZL-1 engine were born.
L-88 12.5:1CR Chevrolet rated it at 430hp at 5200rpm, and dynoed at 560hp at 6400rpm(the engines power peak).
This was confirmed later with testing, with tube headers, 115 H&H race fuel L-88 no. 21550 made 437hp at 5200rpm and 560hp at 6200rpm. The owner did not want to take the engine to its red line.
For 1968 Chevrolet issued seperate AMA specs(dated October 15, 1967) for the L-88 Corvette. Chev rated it at 430hp at 4600rpm/485 lb/ft at 4000rpm with a 12.5:1 CR.
A 1967 L-88 427 Vette with 11:1 CR instead of 12.5:1 and stronger rods hit 186 mph in the 1970 24hrs at Daytona.
The 427 has and will always have a special place in the hearts of all Chevrolet enthusiasts. GM built the 427 until 1998 in the medium duty trucks with its tall deck block and extra piston ring, then picked it up again in a much more exciting package, the LS7 in the C6 ZO6.
That 701 hp 427 with the custom cams/headers is sweet. Did it ever get into a car?
peace
Hog
