What shifter do you have?

Ok let's see if I can get this right the first time since Polls can't be corrected after they're started.

Select more than one if you have more than one ZR-1.
But if you have the same shifter on more than one car you're limited to one selection.

Car came w a Hurst. After having owned another c4 with a blue label that shifted like a hot knife thru butter, I can't say that I'm really for it. Had the ZF Doc blueprint treatment on my gear box though and it shifts every time pretty well considering the increased effort on the short stick.

Don't need the short shifter- seems like a gimmick - like the answer to a question that was never asked.


Case in point- 2011 and newer mustangs with the MT-82 trans. factory stubby- short throw from Ford because I guess they finally figured to save you the trouble and give a short throw from the factory....aftermarket came in and offered a shifter with an even tighter pattern! Why? I think people just automatically think the oem shifter is garbage.

So we can modify the length that the shifter travels, (hence short throw) and we can modify the actual length of the shifter. I would imagine with a short throw, more effort is required to change gears? TIA -Steve

Hurst short throw. I had Bill B. do his refurb on the tranny last December and he reconditioned the shifter as well to better match his setup. Also added the crash-thru reverse detent.

After Bill's magic, the shifting is silky smooth and very direct. IMO, I like the shifter over the stock (had one on my '91) because it is more solid with less "slush".

It was an addition to the ZF in '95 that removed the lock-out ring on the shifter and added a mechanism inside the tranny that provided extra resistance when shifting into reverse. The Hurst shifter does not provide for a lock out and the gate between 6th and reverse is extremely close. At least it was in the one I had. Bill / ZFDoc said it had been ground down either on purpose or from use that made it even closer. Bill has his own shifter that has a lock-out ring.

I have attached a photo of the crash through mechanism that Bill added to mine. How it actually works I am not sure, maybe someone more knowledgeable can explain. All I know is it works and the adjustments Bill made were well worth it.

Exactly! It's actually not that hard and you can't hit reverse while moving forward unless you try real hard! Ask the guys that have the '95 ZF.

The shifter on mine was so bad, it would almost "fall" into reverse if you weren't careful. Either that or you would jump back down to 4th. It was that close.

When the stock shifter is kept but throw is shortened the effort increase is barely noticeable. AND the accidental pushing of the CD back into the player goes away.

I posted this in the FX3 discussion: "I had Marc install a Hurst shifter in my 95 this past summer as I had done on my 93 many years ago. It has the stock knob on it and looks completely stock, which I like. I originally switched because when I had a CD in the player and it was ejected and sticking out, I would hit it shifting into third gear and push it back in. Mostly I like the short throw. It is more mechanical sounding than the stock shifter because it lacks a rubber bushing that the stock one has. Overall I am glad I did it again."
Having said that, I voted on the poll that I have a stock shifter/short throw because it looks stock. Maybe we should have called it an aftermarket shifter/short throw.--Bob

Have expirence with stock long throw, BB mod short throw, and the Hurst.
The BB is the best for the street but prefer the more positive feel of the Hurst for the track.

Good to know. I have to admit while mine is precise and reasonably easy to shift it is a bit clunky without the rubber bushing. But I guess I am used to it, and since I just put it in I think I'll keep it for a while. - Bob

Mine is
Stock,but with a recent stock clutch flywheel exct . Complete rebuild after which it shifts like most Chevrolet muscle cars with the longer throws. Not bad if driven based on driving conditions. It would have been a good time to have intoduced a American Muscle car with a short throw Lotus type back in 90.

bill boudreaus modified short shifter is the best one out there . i have had both the hurst and bills and his hands down is a little shorter throw and smoother too.jmho

Mine is stock, but this is my first experience with the ZF transmission.

My other 6 speed is a T-56 and you go up and right for reverse with no lockout ring to pull up.

I need to do some research on what it takes to install a short throw in our cars and not mess up that whole "reverse/lockout" thing.

You just reuse your stock lift-ring, and stock knob ... then use the short throw shift lever you purchase from them?

Do any of these setups actually include the "gate" too , so the gear changes feel closer and more notchy ... or are they just shorter levers?

Installed is a stock lever with "HURST" ball - mine has the "HURST" branding. If the ball is installed less the locking nut it seems to equate to a lever of maybe a bit more than 1" shorter than OE. Suits me!

I've a KWR modification package and the install CD that I've never gotten around to and a Hurst "take-out" with only a few hundred miles that a fellow just didn't like. I exchanged a late "crash-thru" stock to him. I might be offering these for sale soon.

BB with stock Z shifter,
Stock/ Stock.
I dont know about the last Z I have not drove the car in three years.

I cannot tell the difference between any of them to be honest. Someday I am going to have to have someone teach me how to drive my cars correctly.
