Anybody use this before? They claim up to 20 hp gain. Is it worth it over the stock unit and any cutting needed to install? It is on sale at $339.99 at corvetteguys.com with free shipping.

Thanks

There was a discussion regarding this a few years ago.
Concensus was that the stock filter area was more than sufficient to provide air volume needed for our LT5.
Also, although not a major concern for our LT5 since our LT5 does not use MAF (mass air flow sensor?) to measure incoming air, those that has MAF can be thrown off due to oil build up on MAF sensor - migration from air filter oil to wire in the MAF.
If I were to spend money, my preference would be to get the stainless steel air box from George.
20 hp gain with this air filter, I believe, is too optimistic.

Hey Charlie

The key part of their claim is "up to" so is that 0/1/2... most people seem to install them because they like the look as much as any proven gains. I had one, never installed it though. I couldn't decide whether I liked it or not. I left mine with David last time I was down there, I think he sold it but you might check with him in case he still has it.

I'm sure others will chip in with their own experiences.

When I removed mine and installed an open filter type unit, my car ran like a completely different car. I would NEVER put the Claw back on my car. Like day and night.

This was my experience only. Others may have experiencd somethinig to the contrary.

Thanks Dave,
Am sure David has sold it. Like the look but would rather have good performance.

I think this is the "open filter" solution.

This is from Corvette Central (http://www.parts123.com/parts123/yb.dll?parta~dyndetail~Z5Z5Z50000050f~Z5Z5Z528380~ P39.95~~~~S3N00S3WHC20617737350x~Z5Z5Z5~Z5Z5Z50000 050F) but you can probably find similar ones at the other main vette parts suppliers.

Actually I just realized, I have one of these too - also not yet installed lol

I have one of the stainless steel units that was offered last Spring, from the WAZOO area. I use a stock fram filter.

I bought a spare air filter front bezel and cut it out like this AND added a Corsa exhaust with a DRM chip. Gained 30 documented HP gain.

i have the claw and it doesn't seem any different, but I never did a dyno check, I've also added headers and a catback so any gains I see will be a combination. I might put the stock stuff back one one day to see if there is any difference.

I would pass on spending money on the claw intake... I researched this too and found a dyno test showing 1-2 RWHP increase if any on dyno:
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c4-tech-performance/1315330-air-intake-dyno-results.html. Spend the none on an OBX or Corsa exhaust.

I have one on my car. It came with the car, so I don't know if there's any increased HP. It works just fine though. I'll sell or trade you mine if you want it, was thinking of going back to stock anyway.

If you want a stock one, your welcome to mine. (can give it to you Saturday)

That would be great. I actually only need the metal piece that goes on top. I have the plastic bottom and 2 top parts (but the 2 top parts were not the originals, think their from L98's).

I'm the one who did that dyno test, pretty sure I posted it here on this forum too way back when. Keep in mind that the claw is not a cold air intake, it takes air at the same place as the stock unit. The modified stock box didn't really show any gains either.

In discussing my winter work with Marc Haibeck I asked about cutting open the air cleaner. He says at the 500 hp level does not make a big difference in power but he does it anyway to go for whatever slight improvement in power might be there. He says the stock air cleaner setup pretty much flows enough air for up to 500 hp. So I will have it done.-Bob

That has not been my experience. Back when mine was bone stock the first thing I did was re-enforce the bellows and open up the bezel on the breather. It was good for 3hp but then, the +/- error would also be about 3 from run to run so who knows.
