My red on red 1990 ZR-1 just hit a major mile stone on the way to work this morning. At almost 23 years old just hit 100,000 miles. And although
I know it's easily got another 100k left in it I wish it didn't have that many miles on it. But it is what it is and from the time I bought it with 68k on it I've had a blast owning and driving it.

I guess that is why some people have two of these cars..ha! If only I had the room. I'm glad you only just stated you reached a certain mileage, because when I first glossed over your post it read like you hit a major stone- I was gonna try to find out what broke!

Well, mebby dis will put a smile on yer puss...

A while back I dropped by Marc's shop after he recently had a Z there with 170k on it; a Z that was used extensively on the road course gambits. It was sent to Marc for an assessment and freshening/overhaul as needed.

Marc told me that it really didn't need anything! It was ready to go out and play some more.

I'm convinced that anything we have come to learn about SBCs (or BBCs too?) does not apply to this jewel we love called the LT5! Ride on, buddy! May your permagrin never stop!

Look at it this way that is only 4,350 miles a year :)

BTW When I read the first part my heart dropped with the "My red on red 1990 ZR-1 just hit"

I wouldn't be sad at all....

I bought mine with 23k miles and I'm going fast @ 70k. Will love it when it goes over 100k and more.

It's a milestone, but they can go MUCH further!

:salute:

You know high milers have personality; best part is who cares how much you drive it, if its dirty, scratched, etc. Guy in Crystal Lake has an original 289 Shelby Cobra(he has 2 actually)....he drives them, they are scratched, dinged, dead bugs on the front, rotted leather seat belts, but the car is "as is" from the factory. One of the coolest cars I have seen....it is gathering a history. Owning a car means nothing, but the expereinces you have with the car and memories you build are what counts.

I have hardly driven my 92 this year, but racked up miles on my 140K mile 90. I take my daughter out for for drives and that is what makes the car meaingful to me; ice cream drips on the center console, a rogue french fire under the seat....its all about the experience.

I hope that my 6th digit is burned out by the time I cross over. If I ever do It'll be doing 150+ when it happens! 55K for me now.

At 42 I'm sure that this is just the first of many ZR-1's that I'll own in my lifetime. And it's going to be allot of fun shopping for the next one. I've learned allot on this first ZR-1 and shared what I've learned with others. Even gone to their houses and helped work on their ZR-1's with them.

While I've never experience a "french fire" under the set, I know what you meant. At 92k I'm looking forward to the big 100.
I think of high miles the same as I do women. Not everything gets better but what does it priceless.

When I say I've enjoyed this 90 to the fullest I'm not kidding. And it didn't blow up on me over heat or go haywire. Then I pulled into Starbucks and had a quad lotte. This says it all.

Just broke in!

I am 65 and been driving since I was 15. I have only owned 7 new vehicles, 2 of which I still own and drive. A '95 Grand Cherokee and a '01 Nissan Sentra. Both still run great! The key is to fix things as they go bad; regular service and don't abuse them. They will last forever!!

I absolutely second what Lee has said. I was a lot more conscious of the miles of AZZURRO-1 at 50K. But ROZA NERO, w 112K on the clock, has freed me up to just enjoy driving the car. The motor has about 36K on it coming from #474. So I don't think much of getting in an taking it out for a spin. And let me tell you guys, with the 3.73s installed, this car has just gotten that much more fun to drive. So I find I want to drive it even more looking for excuses to do it.
Frankly, getting a ZR w 100k on it is the most fun you can have w a car. You just don't give a crap anymore about some phony baloney resale value. ;)

Actually passing 100k was liberating. My first was 91 bought in October of 91 (brand spaking new) and ran that one up to 98,000 by april of 1996. After 4 years of BMW 850 (I could not erase my love of ZR-1), I found a 94 in Birmingham, Alabama, cut a deal sight unseen, flew out there from Orlando, Fl, and drove her back home - that was in June 2000. Since then, the 94 was my daily driver until I hit 110,000 in 2009.
As luck would have it, I ran into the WAZOO gang and these wonderful friends helped me bring her back mechanically - motor was fine but needed new bushings, oil and trans leak, driveline stuff, etc...
A new paint in 2010 was the final touch - well sorta... Since then I have been doing extra touches such as 18" Fikses, headers, SS ehaust, Pioneer Avic, etc... On the list are top end, big brakes (leaning towards Wilwood), maybe coil-overs, and God knows what.
Last April with 128,000+ she pulled 363 rwhp - about 435 at crank? This was with plugs loose, so I found out, when my plug boot kept popping out mysteriously a week later.
At 131,000, I drive her as long as it's not raining, including my daily commute into DC - like I said, I no longer worry about milege!
I figure the day she looses compression I will take her to Marc and have him do a 368 or maybe even a 385 rebuild. Come to think of it, I look forward to the day I can justify a rebuild!

And even better when you know how to do all the Maintenance and Modifications work yourself

High Miler Z (http://www.zr1.net/forum/showthread.php?t=13377) You've got that right.

Yea, my heart skipped a beat as I started to read your post Rick....but then it was all good! Good for you Brother, drive on!

I remember when mine turned 10k, and I felt a little sad but then I figured I'd just finished doing the 'long break in program'. LOL Then it didn't matter much till 50k, and I was a bit sad again as I figure I had now turned it into a "driver". It must be me, but I hate that term! Anytime I hear "Driver" it always sounds so negative, like you ruined a great collector car by using it? So now I have convinced myself that mine has "patina" ( road rash & pitted windshield ) and "character" ( dirt ) imparted by regular exercise! :sign10:

I agree with Lee, he hit the mark dead!

Oh and as to the 427 idea? Yea man! That's my dream! I even have the plate picked out, "4CAM-427"......one can dream right?

Carter, What did happen to the Dinosaur's?

From what I can see they all get ported and polished or go for 500hp kits and become formidable competition for the 405 hp BLACK ZR-1's :p
