My friend and I are about to upgrade his 91 ZR-1 brakes to C5 calipers, rotors, etc. He purchased some used calipers and caliper brackets which are now clean and ready to install. He also got some new adapter brackets, but they did not come with hardware. My question, then, is what size bolt do we get to hold the adapters to the spindles? It looks like the adapters are drilled and tapped for M14X2.0x?? Yup, we don't know the length. From pictures I've seen, these bolts are usually allen head and grade 10.9. Before I go to the friendly nut, screw and bolt store in our area, however, I need to know how long should the bolts be that I ask for. Please help if you know. Thanks.

Try these install instructions with "snap-shots"!! There are a couple of different style adapters out there I believe so you need to make sure yours are very similar to these. Good luck! There's nothing that says "these are what you need"!

Dave,

Do the C6Z calipers use the same adapters as the C5? I'm thinking of selling my Brembos and going w the Z brakes/rotors.

The C5 and C5Z and I think the base C6 use the same adapters. The Z51, ZO6, and other high performance C6 packages require different adapters.

Yeah the Z brakes are 14" rotors. Also been looking at CTS-V Brembos and Camaro Brembos. Wondering about the spindle bolt pattern on those.

I think there's some C4 folks on the other forum who have discussed the CTS-V swap. I don't recall specifics.

Can you do the C5 upgrade with the stock rims on my 90?

I don't think that the '90 or '91-'93 wheels will clear the calipers. The a-molds provide adequate clearance, however.

Only the 5 spokes will work.

So, upgrades brakes are going to mean new rims. Hhhmmmm, how will I convincer her of that?

Just tell her you can sell the original wheels to defray the cost :)

I think the key will be to teach her to drive it. She can't drive a stick. Then she'll be asking me about the next upgrade. The passenger seat is never as much fun as the drivers seat.

Honey the wheels are faulty and need replacement!!!! They are unsafe! :blahblah:

I'm taking off my C5 brakes this weekend. ;)

No. Completely different ones for the front. Rear are unique too

Dave,

Where do you get adapters for fronts?

Looking at this installation of the C6Z brakes on a C5, the location of the caliper and bolt pattern is identical. May not even need the adapter according to Pete.

Now here's a provider of C4-C6Z caliper adapters. http://flynbye.com/catalog/i28.html Looks like it is different from the C5
adapters which appears to contradict the pic I posted previously.

Given the installation of the C6Z brakes on a C5 spindle, how could the adapters be dimensionally different?? Maybe they just look different? Unless its the clearance for a 14" rotor?

Post up a few picture's of the C6Z brake conversion adapters.

Also take lot's of pic's during the install ! We can put this in the tech how to section for all to see.

I put a set of the C5 and C6 Z06 adapters together (when ricky got his).... They are bigger, but not Not by much.

When we uninstall we will take pictures and compare

There will be a limited write up and all will be available via the newsletter. ;)

Do the bolts line up (each adapter?). Probably yes. But the adapter is different Because of the calipers

Thanks for your help, guys. I never imagined when I posed my simple question about bolt size in the starting post for this thread that I'd learn so much about brake upgrade options. Never in my wildest dreams did I think the thread would have gone on so long.
Oh well, surprises like this are good. For the record, I went to a rather unique place here in Charlotte called Atlantic Steel to purchase the needed bolts and washers indicated in WVZR-1's reply. I was able to get all of the socket head bolts in grade 12.9 steel. They had to cut the 30MM and 50MM ones from 60MM original length, though, as they did not have those two sizes in stock. (The did have the 40s) Needless to say they did a much better job with their machines than I could have done with a hacksaw and grinder. We now have most of the necessary parts for the upgrade, so soon the fun will begin. Thanks again.
