tire selection

I need new tires, pretty sure I have 22 yr old tires w/33,000 mi on them. Been doing some research. I'm a member of Consumer Reports and they tested 174 brands of tires. I only selected the ultra high performance summer tires. Out of the 23 brands listed only 4 fit a 1990 ZR-1(these are in order from higher to lower ratings and lowest price to have shipped to my house )
1- Goodyear F1 $1528
2-Kumho Ecsta $911.50
3- Nitto NT 05 $808
4-Sumitomo HTR $691.50
I know the Nitto NT 555 is $728 and have had great reviews from various buyers, but I'm not sure why they didn't make the top 23, the NT 05 and Invo did. I'm leaning towards the Kumho. Does anyone have these tires? Which tire would you go with? Here's the page w/ the ratings, as some of these will fit other cars. If you can't read it PM me and I'll email a copy.:cheers:

I love the Kumhos on my Z! They don't get much "press"
on our site, buy they do well in
Tirerack's comparison tests. The aggressive
tread pattern looks great and the $ are good too.
Not too bad in the rain either if you "lift"
a little..

There are more tires that fit ZR-1's and one is Michelin Pilot Sport 2.

Super summer tire and decent wear as well.

I paid $1500, but they are $1300 SHIPPED now.

Heard great things about all of the tires except the Sumi's.

You should be very happy with any of those tires, but base it on how much you plan to drive it.

The Michelin Pilot Super Sport was the overall top-rated tire on CR. I went to Michelin's website, put in my vechicle, and it said they didn't have anything that would fit the rear. I also know some tires will fit, like bf goodrich g-force, but they don't have the proper load index for the 90' Z. Not sure if that's why Michelin site said they didn't have anything for the rear or if it was just a glitch. Once I change the tires, I plan to take it out as much as I can, but not sure how many miles I'll end up putting on it. Maybe@5000/yr?

PS2s you need to go to 335s - I have that setup and they're good tires. Very slightly oversize on the stock rim but just lower the tire pressure a little to compensate.

There are Y rated European ultra performance tires that arent on your list that fit the ZR-1 and are as good if not better than the ones listed for about $845 shipped to your door.

I ran the Khumos on my '92 ZR-1. I felt they were a good road tire, better autocross tire and good in the rain.

On my '95 I have the Nitto 555, and after 2,500 miles I think it's a great road tire. I haven't been in the rain or autocross, but that's not the plan for this car.

When I purchased both cars, they came out of California and had Sumitomos on them. I did not like the Sumis, and if you are an "aggressive" driver from time to time, you will not like the Sumis either. Sumis are good if you just want a tire that "fits" the ZR-1, albeit the rear tire looks small.

What are the manufacturer's names? I'll check them out, although I really try to buy things manufactured in the U.S.. Was actually searching around while I was writing this and scratching the Sumi's for that reason(although they make Dunlop here). Goodyear, Kumho and Nitto all produce tires here. But I can't pin down where the Kuhmo Ecsta is made. So now I'm leaning towards the Nitto.

I have the NT-05 and like it...I also run the Michelin PS2 on my 18" wheels and like them. I think the NT=-05 will lack a little behind the Nitto 555 in heavy rain.

That's Ok. I won't ever be driving this car in the rain. Got my truck for rainy days. If I happen to get caught, I'll put the hazards on and drive slow or pull into a diner or something til it passes.
