Ed Van Scoy, Bonneville World 'Land Speed' Record holder, local Corvette Racer and 'Go-To' Guy on all things Corvette, has generously agreed to do a regular installment for us on all the local Corvette Racing Events and related club activities. Call it Ed's Threads (or Treads), we know it will be both informative and interesting, as well as relevant.
So, you finally have that Corvette you have always wanted and the search is on to discover exactly what America’s Greatest Sports Car has to offer. Car shows and Ride & Dines are great but there is a lot more to the Corvette experience….. Why not explore the performance capabilities GM worked so hard to put into your car?
As a Corvette owner, you already know you drive one of the most powerful and best handling machines on the road. BUT, if you drive your car to the limit on the street, you are gonna get arrested! Seriously, the performance capabilities of Corvette are awesome, but it’s not only foolish, but dangerous to push your Vette to its intended limits on the street. There is a MUCH better and safer way.
Arizona Corvette Racing is an organization designed to provide the Corvette owner with the need for speed the opportunity to learn how to drive your high performance Corvette in a safe, legal environment. From showroom stock to highly modified Corvettes; from novice drivers to experienced racers, ACR presents the opportunity to share your passion with a dedicated group of racing enthusiasts.
ACR members compete for points in time trial events at the best road course tracks the Southwest offers. Members receive discounts at NASA and ProAuto events, and discounts for other track events are constantly negotiated. Novice drivers begin in High Performance Driver’s Education (HPDE). This is a tiered driving experience where you move up at your own pace. ACR will provide experienced driver/instructors to help the novice negotiate the learning process with as little stress as possible. Timing systems are available and help measure your progress. ACR works hard to take the “intimidation” factor out of the novice’s experience by sharing driving experiences, car set-ups, tips, tricks and suggestions. There are typically 10-12 track events per year providing plenty of adrenalin, regardless of your level of skill. In addition to track racers, ANY competitive individual will find a place to fit in. We have auto-crossers, Open Road Racers (Silver State Challenge, etc.) drag racers, boat racers, and even one guy that races his Corvette in the dirt!
ACR also provides plenty of social interaction. We get together every Wednesday night at the Native New Yorker On Ray Road and 50th street (just off the freeway) from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Anyone is invited, member or not, to join us for beer, wings and whatever….. It’s a loose “meeting” of sorts where we swap racing lies, discuss events, products and services and basically anything Corvette related. Years ago, you might find 6 or 8 hearty souls discussing the racing scene in a corner booth, but these days it’s more like 30 people. Just walk in the bar, you can’t miss us, and introduce yourself. You will find yourself immediately welcome.
Need more information? Their web-site is at http://www.arizonacorvetteracing.com/ . The diversity of the group is its main strength. Any motor sports enthusiast is sure to find people that share his or her (yes! ACR has women too!) passion. Join us, we would be proud to welcome you as a friend!
