This is one of those new reamers that goes around corners.

Everybody makes mistakes. But I figured I show some of them. These are called DR inserted drills. When the cutting edge wears out you just unscrew the carbide inserts and rotate them around to another corner and your ready to go. They also are high pressure coolant fed holes that go all the way down to the tip. Not only does it keep the cutting edge cool deep in the hole but also blasts the chips out. The one on the right is 1 5/8 dia and is $1,000 just for the drill body. And this is why CNC machines are equipped with a single block function which only makes one move at a time. And a rapid feed over ride so the spindle won't head toward the part at 1,100 inches per minute. Once the program is proven on the first part then you can turn everything up to 100% and let her rip.

First time porting I had no clue, put a 6" shank in the die grinder, of course no speed control on the grinder. turned it on, it went to 27K RPM, and 6" shank bent at a 45-50 degree angle from the vibration.(cheap HF grinder)

Yikes!

These tools were crashed into the part by guys with very little experience. They hit the green button and CRASH right into the part. That was a 1/2 reamer. I always write my programs to where the tools rapid to within 1" of the top of the part before cutting into it. All the operator has to do is turn the spindle off and use a 1" block to see if it's right. If the 1" distance is wrong then they either didn't touch their tools off right or their offset is wrong. A 50 taper CNC mill is usually pushing 50hp spindles and has several thousand pounds of force behind it. And if the tool doesnt clear the part it's usually the tool that gets wasted. More experienced guys are allot more careful and rarely crash a tool.

Those drills are bad a$$! Didn't have anything that nice back when I ran the mills.

I can usually hear the cnc tool crashes and cursing from my office which is right next to the machine shop. But not as fortunate when my guys crash the head on one of our lasers all the way in the back of the shop. I usually don't find out until they've wasted an hour or two of production trying to repair it themselves. [-X

Some guys will break a cutter and if nobody noticed they will throw it behind the cabinets. So the next time you need it you can't find it. And I love this one. Instead of letting me know that they're getting low on insert or drills they will wait until they are one the last one before they say something. We have until 8:30 am to order stuff or it won't make it on the truck for delivery. Then you either have to wait until the next day to get them or you have to drive accross town to pick them up in willcall. The day and night shift crew we have now is on top of it which makes my job a little easier.
