View Full Version : First Plenum Pull - Code 16

What would be the most common cause of a code 16 after a plenum pull to R & R a starter. I get a SES "Code 16" about 2 second after start. If I clear it by removing the battery cable, it resets the next start in the same time frame. If someone could give some advice I would appreciate it. I did have some trouble getting that Da%# rear bolt on connector in place so if the most common cause would be a bent pin I can take it off again, but I don't want to re-pull if I don't need to. I have not yet run through the FSM diagnostics tree, it will take quite a bit of time to get up to speed on the procedure, pin outs etc.

Ok I pulled the plenum to remove and replace the starter, I did change to a new set of Corvette LT5 plug wires. Of course all of the connectors for the Ignition Module and Coil Packs had to be unplugged. I only had trouble with the one with the 1/4 inch bolt.

hey there,

Please say what you did when you pulled the plenum?

Did you change injectors? Coil packs? Spark plug wires?

I'll let the experts chime in, but they will need what you were working on first.

Did you have issues before the plenum pull?

I think 16 is drivers side air bag sensor. I'll check the fsm to be sure. Infl rest light on?

DTC 16 is Direct Ignition System fault line circuit. I don't know what that means and I'll go run down the page & report back.:salute:

Okay this is an involved one. two steps into the flow chart if you get a "NO" answer go to DTC 36 flow chart....anyway cut to the chase. You may have put the DIS main connector on upside down and bent a pin. I'll read further and report back again. Peace/out!

Sounds like a bent pin in the 40 pin connector...

Can the connector actually be bolted in upside down? I didn't turn it over at any time but it was off center to each side more than once during the process of trying to get it into the fitting.

I dont think its possible to put it in upside down, should have guides in the plug allowing installation only one way.

Technically No is the short answer to the question of will it go on upside down.

There is a slot and tab to line up. All I can say for sure that it is possible because I'm the bone head that did it! :o :sign10: :o

among the host of things that can be at issue to get a 16: bad ECM; bad DIS; several bad circuits and bad grounds. Do you have the FSM?

One thing to look at on the connector are the 2 plastic push type pins, one on each side of the plug.Could these be there to hold the plug in place while trying to get the 2 bolts started?

Yes I have the FSM, I don't see how anyone could work on one of these beasts without it. I'll start the flow chart to see if I can trace it down.
Thanks for all the Fish to all responders. (obscure reference) I'll let you know what I find out.

anyone have any luck straightening a pin that's been bent flat .if so how did you straighten it out ?????

:o I fixed mine using a very small needle nose. I was gentle as those pins don't look like they tolerate a lot of bending. I bent my pin fairly flat also, kind of into an "L" shape. Just be gentle, and it shouldn't break off. fwiw, so I never do that again, I marked the "top" side of the connector using a red sharpie.:o

To all who responded:

This turned out to be a bent pin on the ignition module. It was easily straightened and the car jumped to life, no codes no problems. Repair was postponed due to an A-Fib(cardiac episode) issue, mine not the car ;), it has been surgically corrected and all is well there as well. Sorry for the delayed resolution.

I'll post about a fuel pressure problem that developed 2,599 miles after I first drove it out of the garage under another title.

Glad you are back to health. You can't be replaced,
a car can. Well, almost.....

Thanks-
I've had A-Fib issues since 2003, It's a pretty common issue. After the 4th Zap to put it back into rhythm since then, when it went out again just 4 month later, I decided to have the Ablation surgery. The heart center has just started using Cryoablation. It was scary, they are messin' with your heart... All went as planed. I almost had a heart attack though(kidding) when I got the hospital bill. For the Prep, Operating room and one night in a semi-private progressive care room, just the hospital charges were $105,650.00... My insurance paid every dime!! Interestingly enough, they wouldn't pay $629.00 of the surgeons $2,500.00 bill. Go figure!

Never forget your towel.

My vote is on the DIS plug as well.
Nearly impossible to get to without pulling the plenum again, but if this is the first time you've seen this code, it is the smoking gun.
