In spite the threat of rain in the forecast, my son Roger and I decided to go out to the dragstrip and make a few passes. We drove the 1993 Quasar Blue and the 1990 Black Lingenfelter 368.

We joined up with the Northern Virginia Mustang Club, They rented the Mason-Dixon Dragstrip from 8:00 AM to 12:00.

For this event we had open runs for test and tune and then time trials racing for a cash prize.

It was great fun. The weather was cool and it was hard to get traction until about 11:30 when they applied friction compound for the afternoon sessions. What a difference! The last few runs we made were the fastest ever for both ZR-1's.

For the Black 1990, Roger's best was 12.11 seconds at 122 mph.

For the Quasar 1993, I ran a 12.55 seconds at 114 mph.

Here are some pictures of the action:

My 60' times averaged 2.067 seconds with very little variation. I was under 2.0 seconds on 3 runs (out of 12), but I haven't been able to make much improvement in launching.

Jim,

Put any Stangs on notice? Street tires or DRs?

There were only 3 Corvettes at the event. Besides our 2 ZR-1's, there was a C5-Z06. The owner was just out there for fun so I don;t think he was an experienced drag racer. However we did whip up on the Z06 pretty well.

As for the Mustangs, there were about 50 there and the ZR-1's were doing real well against most of them.

Early in the day, I had a run with a .001 second reaction time. I was in the running for a $50.00 prize, but there was a Mustang that also got a .001 and he got the prize because he was eariler in the day.

I got to spend the day drag racing ZR-1's with my son. It doesn't get any better than that!!

Damn Jim, that's moving out for both of those cars! Nice times! How big a difference did the prep make? A couple tenths? Or more than that?

Sorry I didn't make it up, but looks like you and Roger had a good time.

The track traction compound cut our times by about .25 seconds for both cars. We had made about ten runs each before the treatment. The first run after the treatment was .2 to .3 better than the best run before treatment. I guess that is why they apply the traction compound.

The treatment is applied by a tractor with a tank of compound, a pipe with spray nozzles, and a drag made of cut up tires behind the spray line. The track announcer remarked that the guy driving the tractor knows when he has applied enough traction compound when he can't pull the drag in second grear.
