JUST a decade ago Peugeot was selling 100,000 superminis a year in the UK. Last year it didn’t even break the 30,000 barrier. Now with the launch of the 208 the French manufacturer is hoping to recapture some of that former success. Compared with its 207 predecessor the 208 has taken a huge leap forward. As a result Peugeot reckons it will be one of the best superminis on the market.

The 208 is smaller and lighter than the 207 but offers more space inside. It also comes with appealing styling and more efficient engines. It’s unlikely Peugeot will ever enjoy the massive success it had with the UK-built 206 but it’s confident of exceeding 20,000 sales in the second six months of the year when the 208 goes on sale. At this level it should be vying with the Volkswagen Polo for third place in the supermini market, with only the Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa ahead of them.
Peugeot expects a good take-up of its Just Add Fuel finance scheme, particularly among younger drivers. Under the scheme buyers pay a monthly amount which not only covers the car but insurance, tax, maintenance and roadside assistance. As the name suggests all the customer has to do is add fuel. The 208 certainly looks the part, particularly in its three-door form, with the Peugeot family nose working well on all models. Exhaustive (http://exhaustivenews.com)
