View Full Version : FX-3 ....something I did not know

Was not aware that the FX-3 system had six shock valve settings per switch setting....if you were in the performance mode the shocks stiffen more as you go faster.....below 25, 25, 50, 75, 100, and 125...

I didnt know until I read the small drivers book as a part of the MY90-91 pizza box. It speaks to this along with a graph ratio. Neat huh?

I thought the first two settings were really only used in touring...and that the switch settings basically decrease the speeds at which they begin to firm up. Which is why if you are at highway speed and flip the switch around nothing should change at certain speeds, because you are full hard by then. I don't think you need to be at 125mph to be at the hardest setting.

Bilstein still does em. Keep in mind Ron thats all they do... they do not clean them up repaint them or put new stickers on they simply rebuild the internals.

Depends on the valving. They offer standard and morroca valving for the Autocross types.

$100 ea doesn't matter if it is stock or custom valved.
I had mine done something like 20-30% more rebound and 10% more compression. They may have just tested one out on the shock dyno to get close to the appx valving desired, but i have a feeling they have done enough of them to know how to set them up just by giving them the firmness increase desired.
If i had to do it again, I would have put a little more rebound and compression valving in the fronts, but not the rears.

Phil, you mean to the original owner of the car, right? Or if you buy their FX3 shocks new? TIA
On the FX3 the early cars it does say it the the ZR-1 owner's manual about the 6 selections within each of the three switch positions. Remember the system changes two more times on it's way to becoming the "active handling" system that debuted in the C5. I think the 93 & up cars have an updated version and the 96 cars have a system without the driver controlled FX3 selector switch. I think that is the time line anyway!:o

I think they consider GM the orig purchaser.
If you were to buy new 4 shocks at $200ea, then there is a warranty. Could you imagine if people found out there was a way to get free rebuilds...GM probably bought 200k-300K of these shocks over several years that the option was available- bad business case for sure.

I had Rippie send off the FX3's on the 89 when the coilovers went on the car. It was 80 per shock plus shipping. If you can still find the FX3 computer this is a good mod as well if you track the car at all. A friend had a 90 track car with this done and it was a noticeable difference in how the shocks reacted. I wanted to do the same with the 89 however I was never able to locate a computer...

You can get 4 new FX-3's from DRM for $450... I thought rebuilds would be a better value...

I wiped my rear shock down to see how fast the leak comes back
I have not sent in my shock yet but Lisa has made the offer to repair it for free, I have a parts lady reciept
She will replace it for free but none to replace it with now
I have another correct rear shock, I wanted to put on car during repair, but the gear is the wrong gear on top, hence, I have not mounted it and sent in leaky one for repair, Those DRM prices seem very cheap, maybe old, or just wanting to clear out C4 stuff

Just got one with a roadrace chip from Lingenfelter, they have a couple other chip options. but haven't installed it yet. I don't know if the 89 would be the same controller.

That's what I think it is. I bought the rear trailing arm relocating brackets from them on sale recently as well.

Holy smokes! That's a little over 1/2 of what I paid for a new set four years ago!
Thanks Mike and Phil for the info. I have to go dig up my receipt for my shocks and drop an e-mail to Ms. Ciacci.
Thanks guys!

That's $350 for standard shocks and +$450 for FX3 upgrade for a total of $800 to purchase the FX3 shocks. Not that fantastic of a deal.

I got a price from my local part supplier last week of $375 per shock. That $450 was looking pretty good but maybe not anymore. Might look into rebuilding as next winters project.
