I've pulled out my old carpeting, to install a Heat/Sound Deadening material and new carpeting in my Z. I've come across a fastener, I'm unfamiliar with.
I need to remove the part in the first picture so I can remove the insulation to install the stuff & junk. It's held on along with the foam with the little round black fastener. Can this connector be removed without destroying it? If so how, if not what is it called and are new ones available?

Not sure what the exact nomenclature is but over here it is usually referred to as a push pin retainer. Commonly used in various sizes to hold insulation, small plastic pieces and covering plates. They are ribbed & graduated in circumference, semi hard plastic or rubber. If in pliable shape should come out easily by lifting one side with a blade screw driver or a piece of flat plastic like the little plastic stirring sticks that come in epoxy. Should be available at almost any parts store or car agency. If you break one take it to the shop as a sample.

Hope what I am seeing is what I THINK it is and if memory serves there are a few parts shops on the road to Wasilla.

Correct. Just pull it out. If it breaks, go to any auto pats supply store and they will have replacemants.

closest replacement likely to be listed as a hood insulation retainer.

I'm also thinking about doing some interior improvments at some point.
Which heat/sound deadening material and carpet are you using?
Seems there is a lot of aftermarket heat & sound deadening suppliers out there all claiming their stuff is the best. So far I have not found much hard test data which sorts this out.

I used RAAMmat, and Ensolite, booth available from Rick at RAAM Audio. He was great to work with, and the product works well. More so for sound than heat, though.

I used the "crazy cowboy" or whatever their name is now, kit on my prior ZR-1, and was disappointed with it. It's just foil-backed bubble wrap, basically, and I did not think it did anything other than make reinstallation of carpet more difficult.

Thanks to all who responded. Armed with the knowledge that the fastener wasn't made of unobtainium, I pulled on it and popped it out. No real damage, so I'm good to go. Now- For those doing this in the future- Once it was removed it didn't loosen the black plastic piece. There is a 7mm bolt that holds that on and hides behind the foam rubber, accesible by pulling the foam up from the bottom. Remove that and the Targa Top brackets and then the whole thing comes out. Again thanks, the project moves on. I did choose the one that VetteMed said he put in before the RAAMat, as I'm looking for heat as well as sound remediation. There are tons of stuff out there with very little real objective data, one plus was this stuff is precut!
