View Full Version : Dreaded Fuel Pump Failure (I think...)

Here's the symptoms:
Cold start runs like a champ until she warms up. After reaching temp she won't rev over idle and then eventually stalls. I think it's the dreaded fuel pump failure.
Are there any temp fixes to bring her home? Any other possibilities?
Cheers,
RH
Swap out the 2 pumps inside the tank.
If the secondary pump might still have some life in her,at least enough to get you home.
or
If you don't have tools.
get a thick gage wire and hot wire the fuel pumps test plug on the main harness under the hood to the battery.
Just make sure you unplug it everytime you shut her down.

What Pete said primary fuel pump failure once it goes out of factory loop it dies. Swap em to verify. Also while you are there dont forget to replace the fuel filter on the passenger door rail side.

So is there any rhyme or reason that a pump fails?
My 90 has 65K and as far as I know the pumps are still original, but yet Toyvet had to replace his pumps on a 23K mile 90 a few years back.
Maybe I need to do it for piece of mind

I Duno -=JEFF=- however I dont ever leave my car fall below half tank full while in town. This is one of those I will fix it when I get there issues and I have a complete assemply with new pumps already in the parts crib. If you think about it with GM giving us two pumps you can limp home on one.
My theory is a lot of folks race our cars on the track (Yeah duh) but to save a few pounds very little gas is normally in the car as it heads down the track. I think this adds to the premature pump failure issue. Ownership may be a big factor. More heat load on the pump and with less fuel in the tanks its sucking up all the nasties in the tank which ='s failure. just my thoughts as a possible reason.

Yeah I don't have an assembly on hand and would almost want to make a quick harness to keep in the car for the just in case instance. I might just do the Vettemed replacement method with the Bosch pumps he used and be done with it.
I swapped the pump on my 89 at 90K+ miles

I would bet most of them use or have used some kind of miracle/magic snake oils in there tanks.
I still have stock pumps

When the engine is running, the fp1 relay is not relaxed and will prevent the test plug from powering either pump. This threw me for a loop when mine did the same thing, cause I tried using the test plug.
Jump/swapping wires at the plug at the top of the tank C450, the grey and DK GRN/Wht would make the #2 pump run, or take the aux fuse out of #2 on the passenger side and jumper there, but that's hard to get to for seeing the right wire to jump.

I've been working the past few days and haven't had time to do any testing. I was able to get the driver that dropped her at the terminal to drop it at my house so she's home... I'll take a closer look this weekend. Also, I'm sure I can look it up but does anyone know the GM Suburban numbers I need to replace these with?
Thanks,
Ron
Pretty sure this is it.
1996 2500 Chevy Suburban 7.4L and 1995 Corvette LT1 use same pump.
If you look up 1995 ZR-1 it shows the pumps AC Delco #19180770 X 2

Or if you want to do the Bosch pumps: Bosch P/N 69225 these require making a relief slice in that plastic holder for the pump body, actually two cuts as these pumps are just a smidge fatter than the stock LT5 pumps. They work great though.

Sorry the rock auto site seems to have a thing against a direct link. Just log on, press button for the catalog, click "parts search", then fill in the P/N, Brand name of mfg, type of part, and click find.

and the pumps that came with that set up were not very good. One Brother had a failure in less than a month and I had a failure in less than 6k miles! We both bought the Bosch pumps. I have to give credit for the research to the other Brother as he found the swap with the Bosch pumps.
The only thing I am leery about is that when I bought mine two yrs ago they were $90.00 each....I don't know what to say about the price being lowered now. I don't even recall for 100% sure where the Bosch pumps that I bought back then were made....china? or Mexico? or IDK. Sorry Ron!:o

The 69225 is for same year suburban with 5.7L
The 69226 is for the 7.4L suburban and LT1 corvette.
If the 69225 fits better and plug is same maybe thats the way to go.

Zip Products sells the "remake" of the OE, LT5, pump assembly. Actually, it's more of an update rather than a remake as the Zip pump assmebly includes some modern technology in certain places.
I have a Zip pump assy in my 95. It's been there for about a year and about 5500 miles. It has worked flawlessly.
The PN is GT-406.
I stored my OE pump assy as a spare but...any of the OE pump assys still in service are a minium of 16 years old...beyond the pump's design life, I would think. Earlier in the thread someone pointed out that if the car has seen a lot of operation with low fuel levels, ie: below 1/4-tank, pump life can be shortened because they run hot. Also, if the car has spend any length of time more than a year not running, sometimes that causes a decrease in pump life due to gasoline turning to "varnish".

Thanks for the help...
I bought a pump and swapped it out this afternoon. She runs great! Man she has some torque for a N/A car.

The Bosch turbine pumps were made in Brazil, when I did the swap a while back. Here's the post where I described the procedure:

Just one more pump option- AutoZone sold me a pair of Airtex pumps; - a direct replacement; no fiddling to the assembly needed. I replaced them both.

That's the brand I put in mine, more than 2K miles later, still running great! And yes, they are a direct replacement, no modifications needed.
My car still had the originals in it, the main one was totally dead and the secondary one barely pumped at all.
