View Full Version : ZR-1 Convertible Conversion

I've been thinking hard about this one for a while. I figure that once I get #702 mechaincally sound, I may just take the plunge. The car isn't anything special. Not a pristine ZR-1 and not a low mileage show car....so what the heck?

It's either #702 or rebuild Dom's car and chop it up. The conversion won't be anything all that difficult to do and would be really neat. I also have the body from 1990 #444. I just don't have any extra LT5's at the moment, so #702 may just get the axe or (cutoff wheel), literally!

Last year, I came very close to owning Michael Beal's convertible. I really wanted that car but couldn't come to terms with Corvette Mike at the time.

Now THIS would be a cool rebuild thread for 2012. :-D

Regular C4.
Rear bumper has third brake light in it.
Rear wheels appear to be 9.5" not 11's.

The big hair and the swimsuit had me for a second, but then I looked at the car.

Why not just looked for a clapped out convertible, that way you have all the convertible parts? The way the prices are for these right now might be able find a complete car for cheap and sell off what you dont need.

Rear clips are dirt cheap. Under $1000 for everything needed. Remember, the rear upper surround panel and decklid will only be used to apply the rear 1/4's and then a new mold and panel will be made from the spliced panel.

You interested in doing two at the same time? Depending on when you are going to start this project I can purchase a Z strip the interior and deliver it to you.

It will be in the Spring, after #702 is mechanically sound and home from Chicago Pete.

I'll most likely do #702 and create a process for conversions. After that, I'll be ready to do them at will.

After a couple of PM's, I think I'm going to do the mockup on the red 1990 #444 body from Virginia. The body is stripped anyway. I can do the mockup and mold making on it over the next few months.

What I envision is fabbing the body, making molds for the widened panels and then making new panels so they can be available for anyone wanting to do the conversion on an existing ZR-1.

Is there a market for this type of thing?

I recomment you include the chassis stiffners that Gorden K has for the C-4 to help reduce the car flex you will induce by cutting the coupe hoop and top structure out.

I looked to do this same project several years ago. Some members gave me some great contacts of quality shops that would been able to pull this off. Prices were in the 25-30k range plus the price of a Z to chop. Some shops also gave me an hourly rate only. Most wanted to buy a donor C4 convert. and strip it down for all the parts needed.
If Brett can pull this off (which I'm sure he can I would be interested in also having it done) I might have a line on a perfect ZR-1 to CHOP! No, not my 95 :)
Keep us updated

I forgot, the idea of making her a roadster with no top at all was also tossed around by some shops.

Ricky,

I would not mind having my ZR-1 chopped for a reasonable price; that would be a one of a kind for sure. I only did a chopped top 67 VW Bug back in the day while in high school. I can't imagine how the rear hatch glass would be done other than with one of those hatch kits that remove the glass with a flat piece.

Get everything needed from a C4 Convertible, My concern would be the rear fascia, width of the C4 deck lid, Convertible top locks.

It's really a no brainer. Widening the rear is not a hard thing to do. Latches and hatches won't be an issue. After I do the first one, I'll be able to gage the labor hrs required to do them at will.

This will be fun.

Thats easy, widen the read deck on the outside of the lock receivers.Ive thought about this type of project in the past and this is how Id do it.Id take the ZR-1 and the complete donor convertible. Both cars would be striped down to the bare frame from the windshield back. All of the convertible frame structure would be transfered to the ZR-1.Everybody thinks it would be so much easier to just take a convertible and put everything ZR-1 on that, you could do that but you wouldnt have a ZR-1.There a guy somewhere close to me that has a 91 that was converted in Europe some time ago. When the weather gets nicer wee supposd to get together for some pictures, when we do Ill get as much info as I can on the car.http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a136/FLYTYM/ConanBackL.jpg

I had also thought about converting a ZR-1 over, but Figured no one would really be on board after they learned what it would cost to turn a ZR-1 into a convertible.

I do notice that the cars converted from a convertible to a ZR-1 width are different than cars converted from a ZR-1 to a convertible. The decklid is the difference. The difference is how the decklid edge is done. One wraps over the fender side. The other does not "as much".

If you go that route you should incorperate the 3rd brake lite into the light bar and make it LED as well as the tail lights :dancing

I like the 95 pace car but the litebar is to large for my taste, it almost gives a scaled down coupe w/targa off look. JMHO

I have to go to MI sometime this month to pick it up. I have a 53 to get ready for paint and then I can get started.

My plan is to use the body tub from 1990 #444 to do the conversion and make the molds from. After that, I'll probably sell the body tub as a convertible. Someone can build a car out of it.

I vote chop the windshield for a ZR-1 Spyder look???

Call ASC and see if they have the old molds:)

I've actually thought about the windshield chop a bit but it really narrows the resale market. I like to make my own molds, that way I own and retain them for future use.

Wait your turn. What car are you getting done?

Twin Turbo car. I already have the black Conv parts. I bought a wrecked 96 with 36k miles a few weeks before Brett announced his project. What timing... So, I talked w/Bret @ BG and decided to work with him instead of doing my own.

It'll be a while before I can get these panels all done. I just came in from gluing the seams together on the rear deck 12:16 am. I still have to install latches so I can align the deck lid properly before gluing the sides of the openings to the quarter panels. It all takes time to do it properly.

I have a lot of other priorities at the moment. Customer cars and some more BFR rocker panels for Scott. I just wanted to get things roughed in and then concentrate on other things.

hahaha.....yep! Gotta make a mold off the top half after I repair it. Mending it together with another rear lower portion from a different company. Making my own custom rear bumper.

Nice touch on the hood. :)

We just set the scoops on there for kicks. It was just nice to see it with some body panels finally.

Body treatment options are:
Shinoda
Callaway
Morrison
My own design (most likely my choice)

You have to see the car up close and personal to really get a feel for the lines with the convertible top.
She is going to be a beautiful piece of machinery when she is done no matter what body kit is added.
I like the hood scoops personally, the hoods on our cars are so big they need something to break them up.

In addition to the convertible top, would you ever consider putting a hardtop on there? That would be a wicked look. Kind of like the "Big Doggie" ZR-2 pictured here, with my favorite ZR-1 hood:

http://www.corvettes.nl/gm_prototypes/zr2/index.html

Where can I source one of those hoods??

If I find a hardtop for a decent price, I'm sure I'll buy it. It will fit just fine. The top mounting areas will not be changed during the conversion.

Not sure about the hood.

Finally found the time to complete the deck lid modifications. All panels are complete and ready for mold making.
Now, I can get caught up on other fiberglass projects. (BFR Rocker Panels for Scott!)

Making my own custom rear bumper.

Any thought as to offering the custom bumper without the exhaust cut-outs on each side,Brett? Having the ability to utilize a centermount Speedster-style exhaust system would be a great thing.

Not really sure at this point. After all of the fiberglass that I've laid over the last two years with the 1954 Motorama Fastback project, I'm about burnt out on it all.

*... I'm about burnt out on it all.

BTDT! with several of my past hobbies too. There's a fine line where fun/hobbie becomes...that 4-letter word...WORK. The only cure I've found is backing away from it for a while, as soon as possible: not too long tho less the fire goes out.

SO! Brett, I think you're just suffering from a terrible condition called hypo-ZR-1! But, I think that when you turn the key on a 427 LT5 (and you know you want one!) and take the vert out on that first drive...and drop the HAMMER...all will be forgotten and the permagrin will return! I know... BTDT too! - just recently...as a matter of fact!!;) Mebby you need someone to help ya - or at least hand you a brewski once in a while, while you work...;)

I have dust outside (farming) and Brett has dust inside (fiberglassing) ;)

Was over a 100 mph last night in my quarter mile which would leave most in the dust. In this case that included myself (dusty down there with a Farmer cultivating corn at the end of the quarter where I turn around) :sign10:
