show up, make friends, don't ride in a big cube zr-1...it just hurts your bank account

Trick question, but how much time does it take to go through the museum?
Kevin
12-12-2011, 03:41 PM
depends on what you want to see and how long you want to see it. they used to have more prototype zr-1's and c4's there but most of them have been sold off to private collectors. and I haven't been there in a few years

So I'll just plan on the three days of the gathering. Can't wait to meet some of the people.

The whole point is really meeting the people and hanging out at Bob's motorhome for sausage and beer. Maybe even do a little racing weather permitting. The NMC may take a day MAX.
Come. You'll have a good time (tough on the liver) Meet the people , it's all most the best part.

I'll start exercising my liver now. Sounds like it will be a great raod trip and chance to meet some of the crowd.

The Gathering at the National Corvette Museum (NCM) has, in my opinion, the most knowledgeable and enthusiastic group associated with a specific genre of Corvette, being the C4/ZR-1.
I have attended for the last three years and have enjoyed all of them, even when I left my car there in 2010 to be repaired!
You won't find a better group of ZR-1 Brothers, PERIOD!

This link will get you to the NCM. I haven't checked lately, but they will post up the event when they open the registration process. Keep watching here in the forum for a specific thread aboutthe '12 Gathering. Dave usually starts that thread and he gives us the skinny on where to stay and all the rest of the stuff.
btw, Hi, I'm Tom. Welcome to the Brotherhood. If you decide to go maybe we should communicate as I'm going this year. I may have to be up in Mystic, CT to pick up a passenger. Maybe we might hook up and convoy down....just a thought, no hard & fast thing, okay?

Thanks Tom, I'd love to travel with someone. This is first 'Vette. I'm really excited and can't wait to get involved. Someone in Pittsburg? mentioned somewhere about hooking up with someone to head out. I forget which thread I read that on. BTW, I'm Steve

Hi Steve! Yes, for sure I will keep you informed of my plans for driving down to BG this May. Right now I know I'm going! I'd be glad to hook up with you at some point and convoy down to BG together.
I figure that since you're in NH I will look up mapquest and see what route makes sense for you and then plot an intercept. We have time to sort this out. It's early days yet. My perspective passenger has not yet made a decision and I figure I'll know more when he decides between ride with me or use his own Z.....yes it's the old razor of "do I drive it and pile up the miles? Or do I leave it in the garage?" IDK what to say to that as I just used mine yesterday to make a very unpleasant situation more pleasant. She sure sounded sweet in the canyons on the West Side Highway down by the Mercantile Exchange and thru the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel!:o:mrgreen:

Took mine out in the cold Yesterday to a family event. It was 15 degrees when I got home. I don't think she'll be out to many more times this year.

Tom Tom,
I was thinking I'd drive my daily driver down to you. But if that "intercept" goes thru Mystic maybe we could hook up that way?
Steve, oh by the way, I'm Doug, nice to meet you! Welcome aboard! It was 13 here this morning, must be a beach day in NH? Corvettes make a lot of new noises when it's really cold outside...

Good to meet you Doug. She was groaning a little yesterday, but didn't mind the cold. Still goes to 100 in the blink of an eye. I'll be looking for opionions on headers this spring. I thought SW was a slam dunk, but OBX is looking better.

Well Kevin, looks like we're heading to BG in May. If you're looking for a ride, my passenger seat will have my wife in it, and there's not much room in the back. If you're looking to joint the convoy, as far as I'm concerend, the more the merrier.

Okay, but I was thinking an intercept from your location might be easier? You are gonna have to help me out with some "local knowledge" as the mariners used to say!
I was thinking about you driving down here and that could work as I can store your ride in the garage as we'll be in the vette and leave my car at my work/home location for the duration. You'd have to drive over to the vette's garage though? Eh, we'll figure it out I have faith in that! Wehere there's a will, there is a way!;)

Tom Tom,
That could work. We better get goin', we've only got 4 and half months to figure this out... Maybe we can talk Lou into joining us? He needs a break, he works too hard! In my case, like Bob said, "I used to care, but things have changed"...
Hope you had a great Xmas and wishing you a prosperous New Year!
I'm a little concerned about 12/21/12 though... if they're right, it's gonna really hurt ZR-1 values...

There is one book that you have to find and one person that you have to meet. Well, maybe two or three. The book is called Heart of The Beast. It details the LT5 in great detail and the people that built it. It's written by Anthony Young. It is out of print but you should be able to find it. I have two of the books if you can't find one.
The other is the people. There should be a beer & barbeque going on at Automaster's. Jim Van Dorn owns it and he has stories that you won't believe. The other is Dave McLellan who was the Corvette Chief Engineer from 1975 to 1992. He is the guy behind the ZR-1. Another is Graham Behan and Gary Kline. These guys are hilarious. I'm kinda hoping that some of the other guys from GM will be there as they are getting up there in age but I really enjoy seeing these guys and the cars.
You really need to meet the officers in the ZR-1 Net Registry. These guys are die-hard ZR-1 car guys. ZR-1 Net Registry has the greatest information source on the ZR-1 except for the GM and Lotus guys.
You will enjoy the trip especially if you travel with other ZR-1's. Hope to see you there!

If everyone wants sausage, I live in a German town (Frankenmuth, MI) where they have some of the best sausage in the world. I would be more than happy to bring 20 or so pounds if someone will cook it.

OK, so about a week ago I reserved a room in our club block at the Holiday Inn (per David Johnson) for Wed. through Sat. Looking at the the listing of daily events posted by David on our website, it appears that each day Thurs. through Sat. there's an item "advance registration pickup". What's that? Should I/we be looking to register now for the events of those days? If so, how? I don't see any instructions. Thanks in advance to anyone who can clarify. By the way, I think it's already possible to register for Carlisle in August. I haven't done it yet but plan to do so soon.

What night is the VanDorn BBQ????
Brett, Usually JVD does the BBQ on Thursday nights.....the last three were on Thursday nights anyway.
GSJoe, usually by this time of year the NCM's page devoted to the C4 Gathering has the provision for "advance registration". The only thing I have been checking on & off for the last few weeks and either my browser is screwed up or the NCM has not put the "advance registration" links in place. I wish I could tell you more than that, but I'm in the dark on this now. I would always do "advance registration" for the last three Gatherings that I attended. Oh, yes on the Carlisle thing. I registered for that back in Jan or late Dec!

S1: Why & How
Frank Ellis - then a young Chevy marketing manager, now a retired GM executive, is an unsung Corvette Challenge Hero. He held together the patchwork of engineers, dealers, sponsors and racers that kept the series going in ’88 and ’89. But there wouldn’t have been a Corvette Challenge had not Doug Robinson orchestrated the rout of the SCCA’s Escort Endurance series in ’85, ’86 and ’87 that got the Corvettes kicked out.
Frank, Doug and retired Corvette Chief Engineer Dave McLellan and others will tell all.
Located in the Chevrolet Theater
11:00am – 12:00pm
Open Discussion on Corvette Challenge Series
Located in Chevrolet Theater
1:00pm – 2:30pm S2: Guts, Guile and Glory
This is a show-and-tell. It starts in the Chevrolet Theater and adjourns to the NCM garage, where Challenge cars will be described, inspected, and dissected.
Bill Cooper won the 1989 Challenge championship in Doug Rippie’s car. Hear them and others, including Chevrolet engineer Jim Minneker, discuss the racing and the machinery. How were ’88 cars different from ’89? What role did CAMS play? What rules did the racers not break?
2:30pm – 3:00pm Open Discussion on the win
3:15pm 4:15pm S4: Hoodwinks, Hanky-Panky and History
Hear first-hand about how Chevy dealers both affected (and were infected) by the series and about how collectors have been treated since then by a unique batch of VIN specific production C4 racers.
Listen to Wilkes-Barre’s Ken Wallace explain how he found himself the owner of so many ‘88s. Be awed by Curt Smith’s incredible spread sheets as he has documented and tracked Challenge Cars. Be thankful for Frank Ellis’ creativity and courage and the far-sightedness of collectors like Mike Yager and Chip Miller.
