Who here has used a regular radio bezel with the power key?...I have seen pics from the front but not the back,..does it have a bit of plastic you can mount the unit to?

There's no standoffs for mounting the switch, unfortunately. I've thought about taking out my switch and bezel in favor of a standard one, since the secondary throttle plates have been eliminated, but I can't bring myself to lose the only obvious defining characteristic of the ZR-1 interior (yes, 8K tach, but LT4 cars had that too).

here's a few pics I took when I had the dash apart to fix my key earlier this year:

Note, that's the 1990-only style, in 1991-1995 the mounting is very different and couldn't easily be added to a standard bezel. Also, 1991 added the green LED instead of the indicator in the DIC.

i've never seen the back of a 91+, do you have any pics? I'd love to compare the two

Ask, and ye shall receive:
As you can see, the 90 is simply a key cylinder -- the 91-95 is an actual module, not just a cylinder.

wow you weren't kidding that it was different. I'd forgotten that the 91+ had that light. I remembered that it defaulted to off, but having never owned a 91+ I'd forgotten about the light. gona have to save those pics when I get home

You could get a chip and it becomes a mute point

Functionally, yes. Cosmetically, no. Depends on what you're looking for :)
You can still mount the llater 1991-1995
Since you'll be using a standard C4 item no harm done.
I would drill 2 holes,2 long screws w/nuts use spacers
Slide screw thru hole add spacer, add switch tighten nut done.
For the light drill 2 holes and cut the middle out.
Done
So you will have the head of the screws show touch them up with paint.
This is better then nothing or paying thru the nose.

I agree with you, Pete. You could also make the mounting studs and use Fusor to bond them and then have no screws showing.

Correct, it's possible to cut them to make the later style fit, but it's not quite the correct look.
