Hi,
I have searched the Solutions and read the FSM and I was wondering if anyone has knowledge of a link or whatever that covers the removal and replacement of the turn, cruise, washer and dimmer switch located deep in the steering column. From the looks of the connector that switch part is somewhat complex. Does that switch component really control the 4 functions in one switch?
My main concern is the air bag and setting it off inadvertantly. I will disconnect the batter ground and leave it set overnight before I start the R and R.
I am hoping that someone had recorded the R and R with pix or a video.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Wouldn't disconnecting the battery disable the system?

What doesn't work? What are you looking to accomplish?
In the column there's the turn-signal switch and also a wiper control switch. The stalk/lever that you actually use to control both is a separate item.

Second Chance : I sure hope so. When you are working on any part of the system that interfaces with al "live" airbag system you need to disconnect the power source and wait for a period of time because the air bag controller has a voltage source (probably a capacitor) that needs to bleed down. When I am through fixing the switch I will hook up again.
WVZR1 : I want to fix a problem with the switch contacts that control the directional lamps. I am going to buy the switch form Rockauto. The smart switch stalk is fine.

Try this video. Looks like a late model Chevy.

What do the directionals do? Don't cancel in one direction, neither direction or something different. There's more to the directionals than just the switch. If it doesn't cancel in a single direction it could be as simple as a spring. There's two a "left" control and a "right". There's a canceling cam that rotates to cancel them in both directions, this is generally not a problem with directionals but it's also the contact for the horn.
Regarding the airbag, it shouldn't be an issue but disabling it is covered very well in the FSM.

Hi WVZR1.
Thanks for the reply. First off, when I move the lever to the right turn position and engage the contacts the lamp lights. When I push the lever on to the turn lock position the lamp will cycle in an erratic manner. If I "just kiss the contact" I can make the lamp steady or eratic. The mechanical aspect seems fine but I think the contacts are intermittent.
This is my 8th C4 ( I have owned 27 Vettes over the years) and I have had this problem from time to time but this is a 1990 and my other 7 C4's were several years older.
What I was really after with this post was to see if any other member has documented the disassembly of a ZR1 steering column and perhaps give me some helpful hints on the R and R of the switch. I will use, as an example, the R and R of the clutch. Who ever did that R and R did a great job with the pictures and hints and I was able to save a lot of time in the process. As far as the FSM is concerned it is very valuable but they miss a lot of detail that is important to the mechanic doing the work.
From time to time I have asked questions about the ZR1 and the forum has been great with hints and suggestions so I was hoping that someone else has been there before and jotted down some notes and took a pix or two. I did check the FSM and the Solutions links but nothing jumped out at me.

Don,
Here is a pretty good explanation/pictures of what you are trying to do. It goes further into dissassembly of steering column, just stop at the turn signal part and reassemble.

Hope it helps.

Hi Don,
Wow !! now that link is just what I was looking for. Thank you very much. Perhaps Dynomite would be interested in that link for the Solutions section. It is very well done.
Thanks again,
