What's the best shift light out there and how hard would it be to install? Also, I am thinking of a stealthy location for install like inside an A/C vent maybe? Any pics/suggestions?
Thanks in Advance :)

I mount my Raptor on the A pillar. Also use the diagnostic harness connector to hook up shift light. I can have it disconnected in 3 minutes.
Raptor shift light @ $ 100 on E-bay. Easy to wire etc. Mount it in the AC duct.

I have mine laying next to the A pillar. A lot of folks mount these in the AC vent like Vettemed "Andrew" did However my raptor is a type 2 light which has a staging function. If you do this you cant get to the buttons on the side of the unit to turn it from mode to mode. For a regualr Raptor. No problem

I used the Harlan shift light in the A/C vent and it works great. Looking at around 50 or so.

Done. "Carlos, your payment of US $110.95 has been processed by PayPal"
Now, any tips on getting the A/C vent off? Do I have to take apart the whole console or will a simple screw driver be all that I need...

This is the shift light I bought and installed; it works like a champ and very easy following the instructions here.

I used a wire from a coat hanger to" fiche" behind the kick panned to the connector on the firewall (above and to the left of where the drivers left ankle would normally be - tying into the tack signal wire. The Raptor sits behind the A/C vent. Very stealthy...until it comes on. No trouble seeing it then!

Paul,
It would be easier and more convenient to just use diag harness connector on drivers side and pull switched power and tach signal from there. Add a ground to the MAP sensor bolts then snake wires between A pillar and IP pad.

I wish someone had a YouTube video of a shift light install...I've got some goodies I want for my Vette for this Fall...Skinny front tires, Fidanza flywheel, and perhaps relocating the battery to behind the seat.

Apples and oranges...
If mounting the light at the A pillar that sounds like the ticket. But, if the A/C vent is the target...then I'm seeing some difficulty getting from the A pillar location to the A/C panel; whereas the "C" connector route is pretty simple, methinks, no?
To Nacho: I'll pull up the wiring details and post them after work. Gotta run just now.

Far as skinny front tires go...you might want to talk to Pete about his experience with them...Was pretty hairy!

Way late on this post, but why not just reprogram the 'shift' light on the dash to illuminate a few hundred RPM before you want to shift? Not cutting, no wire running, it just works! Corey set it in my chip calibration (comes on at 6800).

Nacho,
I just installed my Raptor on the A pillar yesterday. Took about 15min since I already had harness done to diag connector. Biggest time consumer was ground to back of plenum. I'll take pics today. Personally I like the light mounted at eye level on the pillar. It's very small and unobtrusive
plus it makes it very convenient to change shift points.
BTW, if anyone is looking for a shift light I have a Harlan
with a long harness ready to go. All you need is a connector which I could do for you. $40 shipped for light add another 10 if you want me to attach connector.

I asked Marc about doing this for me and he said the shift light functionality existed on the '90 calibration chip but that GM didn't use it in the following years.
Said he might explore how to possibly make it work on the '91 and up this summer.

For me the dash shift light doesn't get my attention.
But a bright light in your face does.

I appreciate everyone's replies regarding the A-pillar however, I wanted to remain as stock appearing as possible. i like being stealthy, which is also the reason why I haven't upgraded to a fancy 3" exhaust. I have Dynomax mufflers with the stock ZR1 tips so I like telling people its just a stock little ZR-1....Until I blow past them on the street ;)
Regarding the skinnies, what's the scoopage? I'm thinking upgrading to lightweight aluminum wheels all the way around would shave off between 80-100lbs and thats a whole tenth off my ET. Are skinnies a bad idea? Noone replied to my other posting regarding if Weld makes skinnies and rims for the rear so I am assuming this isn't commonly done on the Z?

Nacho,
If you really want to remain stealthy I would say keep the stock wheel on the run drag radials. I personally stay away from skinnies unless you primary want your car just for drags. I think the first time you get off an exit or in an emergency situation that those wheels and tires could get you in trouble. It would looks badass like my old school 68 Z/28 Camaro did with skinnies, but I feel the Corvette and ZR-1 were meant to be the all around machine for the the street and track. I'm sure you can get anything made these days to our offset and I know CCW can do anything you want as well as others, just not sure about Weld. Everyone is different so again, just my humble opinion. Best of luck with all your upgrades.

Wasn't where I "knew" it was.
