Well, after two plus years of looking I finally got a ZR-1. White with red interior 1991 with just over 56,000 miles on the clock. Drove it back from Bloomington Il. to Vicksburg MS. 10-11 hours about 730 miles without a single hitch or problem; car ran amazingly. These cars are amazing, and owning one is a little surreal.
Car has a good bit of work done to it, but nothing major. Dyno says she puts down 388hp to the ground.

A few things I need help fixing on the car.
1.) It looks like it has a vacuum leak. Pump turns on ever 30 seconds to a minute. Would driving the car around town for a few days with a vacuum leak be a bad thing, or something to get fixed asap but nothing to keep it from being driven? I live a few hours away from Mike Ebert and will probably end up taking it to him. Will driving it those few hours to him be problematic?

2.) The previous owner pointed out to me that after the car has been running awhile on a hot day the car, while idling, will have a slight miss, but runs fine. Which it does. I'm hoping fixing the vacuum leak will solve the problem. He talked to Haibeck, and he believes it's probably an ignition coil. It may be an o2 sensor and at worst an injector, but Haibeck doubts it's an injector because he's never heard of an RC injector having a problem.

3.) The rear hatch botton does not open the hatch.

Pics don't do her justice. Some pics I took on a MS backroad.

Sounds like injectors. If they are original, good idea to replace them....

Congrats on your ZR-1!

Look forward to pictures

Dave,
I think, based on his post, he's got RC injectors.

Welcome to the Brotherhood Bro! I am not far from you in Alexandria, LA if you need help with anything let me know I am learing the LT5 myself. I picked up a white 91 this spring and have done a few projects on it alreay.

Congratulations on your first ZR-1. It sounds like you got a nice one.

There is no problem driving with a slight vacuum leak.

Enjoy.

Congratz!! Welcome to the "Brotherhood of the Beast!" Some of the best of the best ZR-1 / LT5 gurus hang out on the Registry, to the exclusion of some "other sites", so when you have problems or questions, this is the pinicle site for all things ZR-1, it seems.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys! The fact I have one of these monsters is still hard to let sink in. I was diving late last night and got on her pretty good and the sound that LT5 makes is nothing you can imagine. You have to experience it. I now understand what ZR-1 owners are always saying. The engine does lazily and smooth accelerate, there is no boring chug. The only thing I can describe what it fells like and sounds like is an explosion. And the fact my little ole c4 can eat alive any car where I live makes me grin just knowing that fact.

My next question is spare tires. The previous owner said his old man has it, but lived two hours away in Chicago.
Should I go ahead and try to find a replacement, or do I get a spare tire delete and some fix-a-flat?

Thanks again guys.

The spare tire is the same for any of the later C4's. Use AAA and a good set of tires.
More important....You gotta get together with the Chicago FBI guy's.

Congratulations. I just got my white/red with more than double your miles, but I am looking forward to making her look as good as yours!

This is definitely the place to be too :) Enjoy the warm welcome.. I guess it's just part of the ZR-1 experience that makes it so special.

Welcome!! Very nice photos too, like the background & the lighting conditions.

Regarding your slight miss. A simple driving test that will typically expose a slight miss. Drive 45~50mph in 6th gear and simply accelerate moderately. If acceleration is not smooth, it is likely to be weak spark and associated with a coil.

I concur that your injectors are not likely to be associated with the problem. Replacement of injectors in 1990~92 models is very common, due primarily to ethanol blended fuels. Right behind injectors, is coils & wires, that isn't necessarily related to mileage.

When you push the hatch button do you hear the solenoid click,if so the struts are shot. The solenoid will release the window but if the struts are shot they wont lift the window, the window weights ALOT.

Hey that car looks familiar. Took this pic in 2006 right after I got my Z at a local cruise night here in Bloomington. The guy you bought it from lives less than a mile from me (or at least he used to). I haven't seen him in a while, wondered if the car was still around.

Congrats on your Z!

Welcome aboard man. Fantastic looking car!

You won't hurt a thing driving around with the vacuum pump cycling. It'll be fine until you get it fixed. Take a good look at the posts here and over at CF to see what exactly you need to purchase. Very similar vac pumps are available... you don't need to buy NOS for this part.

The miss is hard to tell without a little more information. It could be anything from that vac leak you mentioned to a starting-to-fail O2 sensor. Learn how to pull error codes and let us know if it has any stored.

Congrats again!

The exact vacuum pump from a Kodiak truck can be had for as little as $125 shipped to your door opposed to $$300+ for the pump for a ZR-1.The plug for a 1990 is the only difference I believe. The part number is 94669091.

My pump cycles briefly at times- maybe once every 45 seconds. If that's all you have with that, and everything else is functioning in the secondary system, I wouldn't worry about it much until you have to remove the plenum for something else.
