I watched that and was thinking how would a stock ZR-1 do in the same test? I had to admit that I just thought to myself that that Porsche should do about 150 in the mile, I was kind of surprised when it didn't. I guess I don't know enough to know better.:o

You could very briefly catch a C4 in the show. Was it a Z? I missed the original air date and watched it "streaming", so rewind/pause and such is rough.

I could be wrong, you know how memories get inflated.

there was an article in the registry mag from a few years ago that talked about a member, i think his name was joe, doing a mile run, but i can't seem to find it now.

I was thinking about a ZR-1 gathering in Vegas about 5 years ago. There was a mile run on the Nellis AFB main runway. The fastest was an 89 L98 (I think) Blown with NOS was in the mid 180s. Someone with first hand knowledge will pop in sooner or later and bring us up to speed.

I went 155 at Nellis, mildly modded, maybe 325/350 RWHP
410 RWHP, went 166
422 RWHP, went 168
It takes a boatload(MercCruiser) of HP to gain mph above 100/120 mph, fighting the wind

Hey, that might have been my car!

I want residuals!

BTW, about 400 RWHP. I went faster last time. ~166 with 17 inch
rims, not the 18s I have now. OK, so I probably also weigh more now...

I thought I saw a ZR-1 in that segment when I was watching the show! HooooRah!

So now let me get this straight? That Porsche is the top of the 911 heap, right? It probably costs over 100K but less than 150k, so if you inflate our cars' price to today's dollars our cars are in the low end of the ball park? That guy said that the Porsche was "like a race car" so I was expecting something superior to a 20 yr old corvette......that thing better handle like it's velcroed to the road or I'd be really pi$$ed off if I spent that much cash and some 20 yr old corvette was eye ball to eye ball with me!

:o sorry for the stupid rant....I just get angry when they pick on a corvette because it's interior is plastic instead of cowhide from Scotland. :o

Your Z is not just any 20 yr old POS!

I apologize for my out burst. I just get a little twisted when corvettes are compared to those expensive imports and mechanically they more than measure up, but there is always a "but" somewhere that has nothing to do with the car's engineering or lack there of!

A buddy of mine is a Porsche Tufosi & he has a small herd of them. His 928S isn't all that much nicer than my 90 on the inside in my opinion. He has some kind of 911 turbo from the late 80's with the big spoiler w/ the built in oil cooler ( kind of smart idea ) and the inside of that car is spartan to be kind...okay maybe it's all leather (?) but it ain't winning no interior design contests either...and the pedals are hinged at the bottom like a VW bug! And it isn't even all that much quicker than my 90 when he's on boost! His 964 All-Rad I'm sure on wet road can out corner me, but in the dry I can chase him around for hours on the back roads and he can't run away and hide and that car was almost 70k new. He has this old 924 Turbo that is just a joke, okay it's old & all but when I had my 72 LT-1 I could just bury him, and even that car didn't handle that much better than my 72. I guess I'm just not that sophisticated in my appreciation of cars.

Not only is Phillip's car very fast and sound great, it is pristine!
Even out in the desert it is spotless, shiny, and polished inside
and out. He keeps it like a waxer, but runs it like a racer. Plus,
he let his son race his car! What a guy..........
PS- Thanks for the beers!

You guys need to go out and run the mile. That is where our cars perform!

My question is what would happen after the mile? Where would both top out at? We say life begins at 180 mph so were do we stop vs the porsche?

My question is what would happen after the mile? Where would both top out at? We say life begins at 180 mph so were do we stop vs the porsche? Life may begin at 180mph for our cars but that's also were it ends. Unless you have a tuner car. I saw and old Lingenfelter video on discovery channel and they clocked a yellow 415 ZR-1 with a radar gun at 218 mph. But stock 176 to 180 is it for our cars.

fwiw, in the pizza box for my 90 there is another owner's manual for a ZR-1. It's not the same as the one in the glove box. Anyway I remember it saying 177....I assume that is for a 90.

My 90 ZR-1 did 179mph before top end porting. It just didn't have anymore to give.
http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn63/keeno1970/avatar297751_11.jpg
But after top end porting 181mph. The ZR-1 performance chart on this site shows top speeds of low 170's to high 170"s so they do vary a bit depending on the car it seems. Could be the wieght of the driver also. 300lb man vs 180lb man makes a difference.

How long a distance did it take you to get up to speed? And then slow down? And where?
300lb man vs 180lb man makes a difference. Doomed! Best way to lighten the car? Forget Lexan, forget gutting the car, forget bleeding fuel. - Go on a diet!

Doomed! Best way to lighten the car? Forget Lexan, forget gutting the car, forget bleeding fuel. - Go on a diet! Im not sure because I started from a 107mph cruising speed then when it was clear ahead I burried my foot to the floor and hit 153 and had to slow down to pass a Mercedes and a Volkwagon GTI. After that it was clear sailing. It gets up to 160 pretty quick. After that its about a mph a second. That was a snapshot from the video I posted about 4 years ago. And yes it was on a public toll road. It wasn't at any race track that's for sure.
Also these cars speedometers have a slight lag to them. The mph numbers seem to have to catch up to the engine rpms.

it takes about 5 miles to get a stock zr-1 to 180

it takes about 5 miles to get a stock zr-1 to 180 There's no way it took me 5 miles to top out. Maybe 3 miles. And that's including the fact I had to slow down a few times.
I haven't seen any other members who have actually taken their ZR-1 to the limit. Plenty of drag racing videos but no top speed vids. And lots of opinions.

you also didn't start at 0 I tell you what I'll do. When I get a wild hair I'll do it and we will know for sure how many miles it takes to top out. The only problem is its not stock anymore so that will weigh on the results. Id like to know myself.

i'd like to know also. I look forward to your findings. I just wish pa had more long straight flat in decent shape stretches of road so i could do it again.

There aren't many places you can get humping like that. But there are where I live. Hell 179 is nothing. I have a couple of buddies with C6Z06's with prochargers and mods that have gone up over 200mph on the same stretch of toll road. Apparently im not the only one that knows about it. Hahaha!
