closest i know of, and arguably the best is Mark Haibek in chicago. Why do you need to take the zr-1 to the shop? if you let us know the problems you're having we can probably help you

define "overheating" these car's aren't the hugest fans of traffic and tend to run a bit hot till you start moving. where is the oil leak from? front right near the rad?

Far as shops go, the LT5 is what makes the ZR-1 primarily what it is, like the LS7 makes the C6 Z06!;) Less than 1% of the C4s made were ZR-1s, and most of the mechanics at GM dealers have never seen an LT5, let alone work on one. I won't take mine to any of them.

As far as the LT5 goes, the motor was bread for racing and has proven to be bullet proof, unless molested by the unwashed/unfamiliar "mechanic". Most of the R&R stuff on the engine seems to center around the vacuum operated secondary throttle system**, the pre-93 OEM injectors, and somewhere above 40k miles, the starter solenoid contacts need to be replaced or cleaned up at least. The motor has flat tappets, so you're going to want to run an oil with enhanced ZDDP additives; e.g., Amsoil AMO 10W-40, or Mobil 1 for older engines (with ZDDP added). The current API "SM" has less of the zinc and phosphorus in it, requiring motors to have roller tappets (like your LS7).

**If the vacuum secondary system ever gets to be a pain, you can do like many of us have done and eliminate them and install a specially configured "chip". The result is a much simpler system as the engine runs on all 16 injectors all the time which many (like me) prefer!

Here at the Net Registry you'll find very knowledgeable people who can help you with anything you want to know 'bout your find. And, if you need a comprehensive "going over", the world renown ZR-1 Specialist, Marc Haibeck in Addision, IL is closest to you. You don't need no steeenking GM mechanic!!

Welcome to the Brotherhood!

Hi, over at the ZR-1 Net Registry site I found this chart for you. It may be of assistance to give you a sense of what the gauges are telling you about coolant & oil temps.

Also, not to be a wise guy, but over at the 'mothership' we have an array of How to's, common issues, tips on doing stuff, even a factory TSB data base. I'm not trying to be smart, but when I first got my Z I read thru all of it as it helped me a great deal to get some understanding of the car's quirks and some solutions to them.

Sorry I forgot this is the link to our mothership.

Welcome to the Zoo - and congrats on the great score at BG - Soon you will learn what we mean about permagrin --being a Z06 owner you no doubt have been there already with that Vette. But now you get to know the grin of the beast and are in the KOTH club. DOHC fever as we call it - it has its own special sound. Nothing like 7000+ RPM's.

Maybe the front of the rad has a ton of junk in the fins from all the years. Common problem for the bottom feeder air flow design.

You need to know about two resources
Solutions >>> http://www.zr1.net/forum/showthread.php?t=11619

Tech Tips >> http://zr1netregistry.com/ZR1_tech_tips.htm

This is a nice index >> http://zr1netregistry.com/site_map.htm

There is a 3rd area and that is the search feature of the Net archives.
Join the Net here >> http://zr1netregistry.com/ZR1_net_form.htm
Then you can learn how to search all the old net archives.

Forgot to mention the search on this forum as well but that really is what the solutions is all about.

If you're in Lansing, Joe Thomas is located there and he is on the NCM Board and owns an ZR-1. BTW, Joe just brought his car over to Marc's for a re-tune. Look for member JThomas here on the registry.

Dominic:

I know Jerry. He and his wife are great people. I also belong to Capital City Corvette Club with them. I will be working with Jerry to make sure he's at the Gathering next year. Jerry also knows his way around Chicago, so I might be able to talk him into heading that way for some of your guys events.

Have a great Holiday!:Eagle:
