View Full Version : CCM code 54 "Cranks does NOT run"! '90 MY

The VATS (crank) is fine. I've used an Interrogator to check key and supply the VATS resistance to enable crank but I've no "fuel".
I have no other codes except a H41 (communication) and occasionally there is a communication problem on my Tech1. I've nearly got the CCM in my hands and I'm going to attempt the rest of the diagnostics this week-end likely.
I'm interested in maybe this resolution. Can just the "fuel enable" be programmed out of the PROM for the ECM. If it can then I might consider removing the secondaries and just have a PROM done to accomplish everything.
I've ordered a simple "fuel enable VATS by-pass" to just get it running if I have no luck in the diagnostics. It's not a solution I'd like to use permanently, I understand there can be and likely will be maybe "SECURITY" lamp issues. Don't know!
Not knowing if the car is a 30Hz or a 50Hz signal to the ECM I ordered a dual wave. There's comments everywhere that indicate both!
There's a 10 pin connector, engine harness to instrument panel (right side of instrument panel) I believe that I've not put my hands on either. Can someone maybe point me towards it!!

I'm pretty confused by your post. If you had a VATS problem, motor wouldn't crank. You'd have no juice going to starter.
When you turn ignition ON, do you hear fuel pumps priming? If pumps are not running, it's because there's no signal from ECM indicating that you have ignition or Distributor Reference Pulse. Does the motor try to start and then die or simply not ignite at all?

Did you put a battery booster on the car recently?

VATS in a '90 MY and more accomplishes both "crank" and "fuel enable". They're somewhat related but you certainly can have "crank" with NO "fuel enable"! Like I mentioned I have crank and it will crank with key, and I've also used an interrogator. For the ECM to do what you mention the CCM needs to supply either a 30 Hz or 50 Hz signal to it. It may be more technical than that but I believe that's it in "simple terms"!
Fuel enable I believe was accomplished in the late '86+ VATS cars through the "Theft Deterent Module". I believe in '90+ cars it was moved to CCM/BCM component.
'90 MY FSM 8D54 - CCM Code 54 - VATS (Pass-key) FUEL ENABLE CIRCUIT (Fuel enable failure)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
KW - I have but weeks ago and it has run several times since. This time I started the car, idled it for some time and moved it maybe 100 yards. Hours later "cranks - does not run"! I've read where a battery jump start can disable a CCM. Is that what your maybe implying? Could be?
I'd maybe be interested in trying a CCM if someone had one with a "known key resistance" that would save the aggravation of the interrogator! I can have mine rebuit but a used now on loan or very inexpensive could make it run NOW! The diagnostics would be over. I could then just not install the by-pass that shold be here probably Wednesday!

I'm quite interested in whether the "fuel enable" can be defeated in a "PROM update" and if it's possible I might just consider removing the secondaries and defeating the "fuel-enable" with just one PROM change. I hadn't planned on the secondary removal until next fall (if at all) BUT this situation could change my plan if it can be accomplished.

The VATS control on ZR-1's is in the CCM.
Chances are that the key was not read correctly. The VATS system would lock out the starter and the fuel. Maybe in the past, someone has bypassed the start relay. Then with a VATS lockout the engine will crank but not start.
It might be best to skip the VATS repair and bypass the VATS fuel lockout. It's easy to do on ZR-1's with a modification to the engine calibration chip.
Best of luck.

Marc,
Thanks for commenting.
The original CCM will only allow crank with a #6 VATS. I installed a 2nd CCM today that will only crank with a #9 VATS. I get the same errors Code 54 Fuel enable circuit.
If I understand your comment correctly the "fuel enable" can be bypassed/defeated with a PROM modification?
In the FSM there's notes regarding an SIR situation could also create a CCM code 54 and disable fuel. The SIR fuse is NOT blown but there could be issues with the SIR. The Tech1 CCM data displays the seat belt as "buckled" but it certainly is NOT!
I will drop you an email regarding the situation.
Thanks,
-Dave
