View Full Version : Coilover too much spring?

I was at Dominic's tonight and he said he was not happy with Coilovers, said they are hard and bounce back instantly.

so while he was working on his car I was looking at his springs and they don't seem right. To me I think he has 12" springs which are too long. He said he thinks it is a DRM kit, but the coils on the springs look too close.

Dom's:

Mine (10" 425 rate Hyperco):

I just think Dom's is compressing on itself.. no room to go anywhere

what some of the other Coilovers look like?

Looks like your theory is sound.

Exotic Muscle?

Exotic Muscle?

not too concerned where it is from but more the spring..

I think if Dom switched to 10" springs the ride would get better

Hyperco springs are about $60 ea at Speedway motors

I would do 425 front/ 275 Rear

I wonder if one of the PO of Dom's BR swapped the springs, but Lee you might be right with Exotic Muscle for the kit since the car was down that way

Based on these pics Jeff you are correct. My springs (Hypercoils) like yours look just like yours. Doms are entirely too compressed. Hes riding on a buckboard at the moment or a nut crusher if your prefer. GC

Mine for comparision

Guys,

Thanks for the pics. Definitely the wrong springs. Not sure where they came from or what they are. I'm wondering if I just don't go ahead and buy the right springs trying to get them on before BG. The car literally bounces off the road when I hit a dip. Might explain the rubbing sound I get on a left hand sweeper. The rear tires are rubbing the inner fender well a bit towards the rear also.

yes i would get new springs..

but you need to decide on the rates

Just spoke w Randy at DRM. He suggested the 400/275. He described it as a tight ride without being bouncy. I asked about the 425s and he said that if he swapped them after having 400s, I wouldn't be able to tell the diff if i hadn't already known. So if I wanted to stiffen things up a bit, I may try the 450s. If I can get them soon enough, I would cancel my alignment to put these on.

The spring is defiantly the wrong one; it is much tighter than it should be. You can get springs and pretty much everything you need from HRP World. http://www.hrpworld.com/index.cfm?form_cat_id=504,587&action=category
That looks like the DRM set up with the hat that it has, if I am thinking correctly the EM kits use a different hat much like the Callaway set ups. How high up the sleeve do you have the perch?

Here are the DRM's on the '89 same as everyone's above: (Sorry for the crappy camera phone pictures)

Dom this is why I ditched the rear dog bones and went to the Banski trailing arms. After loading the new Poly bushings into the dogbones they were too fat with the new coilovers. I highly suggest you DO NOT do any alignment work until you are done with your suspension work. I also suggest you think about new trailing arms due to the clearance issues. GC

I messed with different spring rates and still run (99% of the time) the 400/275 that DRM originally set the car up with. When I stepped up to a bigger spring the car developed a push at lower speeds but at faster tracks (TWS, TMS) the car responded nicely. Your results may vary depending on the bar set up you are running.

Pete and I got the new springs installed. Went with 425/275. We took off the springs and found that they were Hypercoil 10" 400/300. BUT, they have 10 coils. Went to get an alignment and found that lower ball joints need replacing.

I did my uppers and lowers and all the bushings during my upgrade as well. You will be happy Dom. Im assuming FX-3 will be retained? Id list those removed coils over at the Corvette Forum Dom, somebody will want them. GC
