View Full Version : i just did some quick maths on what it would cost to mod my car

Kevin

to the level i want it....top end/heads/headers/powder coat the engine/stainless bolts/tune and I'm looking at $13,609 and that doesn't count the exhaust system which I haven't priced yet because i can't find a price list for the power effects system or getting the car to Chicago, the flight home, or the flight to go pick it up. Feck it this ones staying mostly stock except for headers and exhaust. I can buy another zr-1 for less!

so who's got a modded zr-1 coming up for sale in the next few years?

Can you post how you arrived at those numbers? Seems awfully high to me. I have all that done on mine (except the heads) and I'm sure that I didn't spend but 4-5K on mine. I also have the power effect exhaust system....really sounds great with the long tube headers....

Having the heads done sure drives the cost up. I'm hiding money from my wife and hope someday to have enough coffee cans buried to get mine done.

I didn't think the power effects system could be sourced anymore - but maybe I'm wrong?

I hope I am as I'd sure like to find one available!

Headers: $449
EXhaust: $350-$1200: find a nice used one
Porting intake : $700-$2400 depnding on who does it
Chip: $350

i went to mark haibeks site and ran the numbers.

they came up slightly lower this time: $12,857
haibecks 500 hp package: 9899
engine referbish: 2108
cats: 570
s/s bolts: 140
coolent bypass: 25
red and black lettering: 25
IAC relocation: 90

and that doesn't include the cost of the exhaust system which is probably $1500, on top of getting the car there, getting myself there and back....and of course this is assuming the cost of tuning is included in the 500 hp package...

then you need new wheels/tires to put down the power...whats the going rate on a set of FM5s or FM10s? then the price of a good set of rubber, then more woah to keep up with the go....this is getting ridiculous

Kevin

LPEs package runs $15,xxx
sgc is 7500
corrys package isn't listed on his site
neither is JVDs

You're wanting a Power Effects Exhaust system......they're no longer available....I sold the one that came on my Black Rose last year and went to a Corsa and love it. Having driven to Bowling Green numerous times the droan was driving us crazy. It's all a matter of what you like and want..........best of luck in your search for one, but I would drive a Power Effect car first.

I just read a thread somewhere about a guy thats got a Power Effects system on his car and wants something a little more quite.

I traded my B&B away for a Corsa. Just drove 400 miles across the desert with it comfortably. Seems to make the same hp on a car with stock cats.

I'm fairly satisfied keeping mine CA legal with oem manifolds. Maybe she's putting down 410-415 hp? What's 112.5 to 113 mph in the quarter relate to in hp for a 3500 lb car? That's about what it runs like with mild porting plus pipe and chip etc with all stock gears/flywheel etc. But pulling the engine and going for cams and porting gets expensive. I would rather mod my LS3 once the $ level goes into serious big wallet territory.

LOL I did similar calculations, as you did above, earlier this year. I then went to racingjunk.com and found this little gem for $7K. Been having fun ever since!

That pass was 6.52@103.5mph in the 1/8 mi. I plan to run a 200shot of NOS later this summer.

How about a modded ZR-1 from Long Island NY that has been for sale for the last 2 years? 441 ci with neck snapping performance. Frank was asking less than what it would cost to just build the 441. This is a phenomenal opportunity for the enthusiast who wants big cube LT5 fun. You can probably see it run at Beech Bend in 3 weeks. :saluting:

i've wanted to buy that car since it was a 368 but i've never had the money and it doesn't look like i'm going to have that much spare cash anytime soon. I'm also not going to lie, i'm a little afraid of an lt5 that big

As mentioned before, the Power Effects system hasn't been available for quite a while. You can find them used, but they don't come up very often. Prices I have seen for used have been in the $800-900 range. Not long ago there was one for sale on Corvette Forum, but it wasn't for the ZR-1. Asking price was around $500 if I remember correctly.

Make sure you never ever ever ride in a modded ZR-1 or all of the above goes out the window.

This should be enough to sustain 7,500 rpm and generate over 750 horsepower on pump gas (93 Octane) on the engine dyno. The other route that was discussed was to spin 8500 rpm but that would require another 5K to 8K and a loss in reliability.

Or, you can just wait ( like me ) and someday have some of the slowness removed from the stock LT5 you already own!

You weren't riding in DDSLT5's 368, it was mine and DDSLT5 was driving it like he stole it. I was behind you 2 in another ZR-1. The 368 was running a little rich and shooting flames at me from the tailpipes. That drive was a lot of fun.;)

The price for a turn-key 500 hp package is considerably more that a DIY. How much different? My semi-DIY package came in at about $4200 including chip and exhaust, sans powder coating and "education".

There is a lot of satisfaction gained from a DIY project, and a lot to be learned too. And, you can do it in steps: You can P&P the top end, install the chip, and install the exhaust and end up with 400 RWHP for little more than the cost of the exhaust and the chip. And, what the heck...Many an LSx will eat your dust when you're putting down "400", yet it runs just like a stocker...until the hammer is put down! Then later you can do the heads and cams too, if you like, and add around 40-50 more to the rear wheels. Now you're standing over a stock LS7 Vette for under $5k. That leave plenty in your budget for powder coating.;)

BTW, If I'm not mistaken, Bob G and Al boosted their LT5s to 427 and 441 ci (respectively) for about the same ballpark money as your Ford project you quoted - just to keep apples to apples.

Options...options...options.

I had the Haibeck 500hp pkg done back in 2009-2010. I think it was worth every penny. I didn't have the option of DIY but I did have the option to spread the cost over the time of the build. I was also able to get some other things done to the car while it was in trusted hands. I think now days a DIY is a lot easier because of the collected wisdom & expeirence that is being gathered by many people on this forum. You have WAZOO & FBI just to name two. Some fast cars coming out Ill. WAZOO will have some soon

Can't help ya with the "balls" part.:sign10: But far as skills go, nobody is born with them. (That is the "sans...'education'" part I eluded to. ;) Now I know where the "quicksand" is in the swamp and posted signs for others that follow so their education can be much cheaper. As Marc Haibeck told me at the onset: "If you don't punch through a runner at least once, you arn't trying hard enough!" Hell...It's only aluminum. Pros can fix just about anything, so let the chips fly, I say!)
