I changed mine not knowing what type of tranny fluid was used. Better to be safe than sorry......

Hi janozr1,
Probably no need to do that. I would think the lube is okay. If it were me I would change it just because I wouldn't feel right about using the fluid that sat for years. I have no facts to support my "feeling" but a couple of liters of fluid isn't that expensive compared to what a new trans costs. It would just make me feel better.:o
I would change it to the Castrol TWS 10w-60. See zfdoc.com for details.

Cliff,
That write up & all the other info over at Bill's place is the reason that I change my zf fluid every winter.
Although, I am close to Rockland Standard Gear, the other place that does our zf's when they go out. To me it's easier to not have to pull the trans and send it out for a rebuild because I dropped the ball on P/Maintenance.

Yes, that is a great addition, that drain plug. I had that mod on my 72's gear, and what a breeze to do the changes!
I still use the suck it out method, but that gets done every winter also. It's a PIA but what-cha-gonna-do. I'm not taking my gear down till the batwing bushings give me trouble or some other failure causes me to do an R&R on the gear.:dontknow:
