Last week I bought a Black 1990 ZR-1.
http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2011%20Mar%20Black%201990%20ZR-1/Sideshot.jpg
Having never owned a Black car before, I will need to learn how to keep it shiney and new looking.
The ZR-1 was on ebay two weeks ago. It is a Lingenfelter 368 with modified cams and full top end porting, lightweight rods and pistons. Dyno sheet shows 550 HP at the crank!
http://i407.photobucket.com/albums/pp152/QB93Z/2011%20Mar%20Black%201990%20ZR-1/LT5pic.jpg
I traded in my 78,000 miles Red 1990 plus some cash to move up to this 32,000 mile, beautiful car. I am very happy!

Thanks Pete, Yes it has long tube headers and the air pump system is still installed so it is hard to see the headers from above. According to the documentation I have so far, the car went to Lingenfelter three times. I am the second owner.
Black with Black interrior. Excellent condition and well maintained by the first owner who reportedly has a nice stable of performance cars.
Borla exhaust with no Cats.
I should be getting more documentation soon.

Don't worry Rich, I am buying, Jim, Dave, & Phil magnified rear view mirrows so they can still see us back there. Sounds like a nuke arms race with the FBI crew.
Congrats Jim! We'll plan a Ricky Day and get her all cleaned up for ya, I'll work for a WAZOO MD, I need my Red GS panels installed :saluting:

Who was the former owner?
The previous owner was a guy named Jim M. out of the Freehold area in Jersey. I met him when I 1st purchased my car and he took me for a high speed run in the Z, Great guy with an impressive stable of fast cars. I was offered last year to buy the car but could not afford to pull the trigger. Jim got a great deal on a sweeet car..=D>

on taking care of your black car. i will share what i try to operate on .is 1 every time one touches a black car it scratches it period . first invest in a doz micro fiber towels . 2 invest in a leaf bower to dry your car . stock up on detail spray it can be used in.between washings with a micro fiber towel to spoof her up .. i also bought a medium pressure washer to do the precleaning when washing.i use a 21 bucket method with screens that go down 2/3 of the way in the bucket to let the dirt settle in the bottom and not stay suspended in the water . 1 bucket is loaded with a good car wash soap and micro fiber towels .the second bucket is rinse water for the wash towels.. i blow off what suface dirt with the pressure washer . then top to bottom wash the car .i split the car in 5ths . then i rinse . .then i rinse again and spray a light mist of detail spray on that rinse water and blow dry . once a month i wax the car with meguires classic wax . i never press hard and use only a sponge applicator pad . i wait at least 20 min before wiping off .when i take off the wax i use my porter cable buffer to take off the wax on 3 with a micro fiber pad . i never press just let the weight of the machine do the work . once every 3 months i go over the whole car with the porter cable with machine glaze . then i use 3m ultra fina to polish her up before waxing . this has worked well for me for over 8 years . hope this help some anyway

I would like to see pictures of your car. Sounds like you have put alot of thought into it. I think I am going to try the leaf blower. Why did you use Meguires wax vs a synthetic?

Congratulations :handshak:
It is impossible to keep them clean, but they can be easier to maintain if you use a polymer like Zaino, do spot cleaning with the detail spray, then use a California duster to get the surface dust off.
Of course other products such as what Adam's sells will also do the trick.
Borla exhaust with no Cats.
Borla is not bad by any means, but the B&B's will knock your socks.
Either way you will be having a great time with it.

Fair question...ESPECIALLY when it comes to BLACK.
on taking care of your black car. i will share what i try to operate on .is 1 every time one touches a black car it scratches it period .
This is the #1 reason I switched to polymer coating!
"...then i rinse again and spray a light mist of detail spray on that rinse water and blow dry . once a month i wax the car with meguires classic wax . i never press hard and use only a sponge applicator pad . i wait at least 20 min before wiping off .when i take off the wax i use my porter cable buffer to take off the wax on 3 with a micro fiber pad . i never press just let the weight of the machine do the work . once every 3 months i go over the whole car with the porter cable with machine glaze . then i use 3m ultra fina to polish her up before waxing . this has worked well for me for over 8 years . hope this help some anyway
That pretty well sums up the #2 reason I quit waxing and went to polymers...(Zaino, actually).

I like um shiny, but don't like ta be a rubbin 'em alla time...waxes work, but minimal maintenance led me to polymer.

i ended up using those products after attending a sat meguires class 6 years ago . mike phillips taught the class.and suggested those products to me as well as the procedures i use . he is now working for the auto geek people . he is a great guy who has almost 30 worth of detailing and development experience of waxes and polishes. my black car still looks like new and is void of orange peel since color sanding it . there are a lot of great products out there that may be better than what i am using ,but i have stayed with what mike suggested 5 years ago since it seems to work so well and doesn't cost an arm and a leg . the key mike always said was to set up a way you want to do it and follow it religiously . which is what i have tried to do .hope in some small way it has helped

I think this 3M product works well for dark colors and hand application. walmart had it for awhile, but they discontinued it- wish I would have bought every bottle they had for $7.97 on the blowout shelf.

http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/Car/Care/DIY_Projects/Appearance/Protecting_a_Car_Finish/ that is a really nice wax . the ultra fina from 3 m is the best thing to polish/ remove spiderwebbing from dark colored cars .use with your porter cable and move the pad very slowly . you can work this stuff for almost 5 min before it drys

The car ran great a Mason Dixon-Dragway. The best 1/4 mile ET was 12.158 at 121.94.(uncorrected) with my son driving. He was getting better every run but we ran out of time. We were running drag radials. On the 12.158 run, he was shifting at >7000rpm and he crossed the line in third gear. The car has a stock differential. 60' time was 2.05 sec.
I am very pleased with the car except the shifter is a lot "looser" than my Quasar Blue. I never miss shifts in the QB, but I did some 2nd to 5th shifts in the Black car. So until I can replace the shifter, I will be doing some retraining and practicing at BG.
I am looking forward to a great day at the track. See you there.

I've always run 1-2mph slower at Mason Dixon than I have at BG, in spite of the much higher temps at BG. So I'm interested to see (well, hear really) what it does at the Gathering. That thing really hauls
Watching it run reminded me of racing Ron's LSV. Once it's about a 1/4 of the way down the track, it just really takes off. It looks to have tremendous ability to run cars down, though there were some fast cars out at Mason Dixon this last time.
