Code scanner recommendation

Hi.
The LT5 of my ZR-1 suddenly began to hunt with "Service Engine Soon" warning turned on last week. The symptom was very similar to the carburetor car which has bad secondary throttle valve. The symptom suddenly vanished away after about 30 minutes of stumble running. The engine got to be fine suddenly and the SES warning light being turned off. I have no idea about this trouble.

I think I should read the code left on the computer but I have no idea what code scanner will work with my 91 ZR-1. Could someone please let me know what scanner will work?

Any GM OBD-I scanner should work. However, you can also use a paperclip. With the key on/engine off, stick the paperclip (or short length of wire) into the rightmost upper two holes of the ALDL diagnostic port under the dash on the driver's side.

The "Service Engine Soon" light will flash out the codes. It will flash out the code "12" first, three times, then any other codes, flashing each one three times before moving on to the next.

It flashes each digit, so 12 looks like "flash, flash-flash" then a longer pause, then the next code (or repeat).

Here's also another method of displaying the codes on the speedo. http://www.corvettephotographs.com/c4vettes/codes.htm or if you want the codes, and record live data. http://www.ttspowersystems.com/DataMaster.html You would need an ALDL cable though, and a pc with a serial connector. I think the usb's might work, but harder to get it to communicate on some pc's. Software is free for the first 20 recordings.

I bought a used Tech1A tool. If cost is not important, it is the best. It is old technology, but it can read data and output signals to test circuits in the car. It can reprogram the CCM, take recording during operation to be viewed later etc.

There are laptop programs and cables that will do some of the same functions though and might be better for most people.
