While I was out of town over the last three weeks TDY I had the ZFDOC install a new RH Cam tensioner upgrade kit. As discussed here. Pic below was taken from this thread the upgrade consisted of an aluminum housing that collected more oil. Note that the tensioner in the kit comes "loaded" or compressed.

http://www.zr1.net/forum/showthread.php?p=105663&post105663

While I know its "normal" for some of our cars to be a little rattlely at start up... to me.... it was just plain unnerving. My car would sound like the cams on the passenger side were going to fly out of it. I can tell you this is a outstanding upgrade to get if your car is doing the same thing. If you look at the above post you can see pics posted up on the differences.

I know GM would never call this chain rattle a defect just like those famous Multech MY 90 Fuel injectors however my hats off to the engineer who resolved the problem by allowing more oil to be cupped in order to remove almost ALL ofthe rattle. My results were fantastic and I highly reccomend getting this kit. The kit is pricey but it includes a brand new tensoner as well so.... Your mileage may vary. I highly recommend this mod. GC out

Okay, I know I'm not swift on the uptake....so we have to make these....well I mean we have to get a sample of one so Carter can reverse engineer it so Carter make them....do I understand the situation correctly?

These are nla at GM right? So we have to keep our eyes on e-bay to buy one for our reverse engineering project, right?

No not quite. You didnt add the part where Cliff implied im a butt head for not sending off the susposed "last one" (hell I had no idea) off to Carter first who responded two days after my final post BTW in that thread.

Holly crap was my "more forthcoming response" Cliff because I just realized I hosed up a chance to "help" the community. I had not even looked at that thread again until last night when I posted up my impressions to find a picture I remembered being in there. Now I read to the bottom where Carter offered to help.

So "Holly crap" I guess I am a total self serving AZZHOLE. Thanks for pointing that out to the entire community. Next time I go TDY for almost 4 weeks i'll make sure I reread all the posts again on my work laptop.

No your not Daryl, you didn't realize what the conversation was at the time you decided to have your issue repaired.

If I was paying more attention, I would have started looking for one a long time ago....I didn't do it either so I'm just as much an A-HOLE as the next guy!

If I find one, I'll buy it and send it to Carter to do whatever we need to do to reproduce this stuff.

Thanks Tom. Jerry asked me scans for the GM install sheets. I still have that and I am sending the scans of it tonight to Jerry. I will send those to whomever wants them as well. I think we will ALL be looking for that housing to pop up again. GC

Do you suppose if I begged on my hands & knees at the gathering this year some engineer, either presently employed or retired, at the BG factory would go dig up the blue prints and make a copy for us?????:sign10:

Let me clarify before GC gets into more trouble for buying the "last one";)

He bought the last one for sale, i kept one on safety stock & will throw it in the mail to Carter tomorrow to see if he can make 50 or so.

Just a heads up for ya.......reverse engineering especially in any quantities is frowned upon by those holding the original patent if a patent exists in this case. I also recall there is a 12 year (or set number of years) limit on patents before others can compete selling patented items ;)

So they're Art Nouveau candle holders... :D

I am sure not knowing the original design situation or how it came to be that this is a special case since it appears very limited production exists. It also appears that none were installed on original engines. In other words this was a GM after market improvement which really never took off.

Why do we need spare Aluminum Chain Tensioner Housing Upgrades :drunken_s

Uncle Cliff

Because GM won?t admit the rattle at startup was a defect. You are correct this never showed up as a correction on the entire production model run. I think "think mind you" this was created by an engineer as a solution to the problem that bothered a lot of original owners. Can you imagine some owners out there that were under warranty when there 70K in some case 100K ZR-1 started to rattle like the cams were going to fly out of the engine? It was done either to appease the earlier original owners or somebody at GM was so damn bothered by the problem that they determined to provide a solution. To GM and most ZR-1 owners this was an LT5ism.

Just like the letter GM wrote in response to the early Multech fuel injectors. GMs stance was basically these performed as designed and the problems associated with them due to the changes in fuel formulation (Methanol MTBE) is not our problem. The fact that these are melting due to this change in pump gas is your problem.

So Carter sells them as his design candle holders and has copyright on them for the next 100 years or so :)

All he needs to do is put one little tweak on it, maybe an engraving of the ZR-1 symbol or something and it becomes something different.

Yeah, I would definitely agree on abandoned! If I'm wrong, go buy some at your local Chevrolet dealership.

I don't think anyone gives a flip if parts for the LT5 are reproduced. Heck, what about rods, pistons, sleeves, valves, water pumps, alternators and a plethora of other LT5 specific parts that have been.

Dynomite,

Sometimes you make my head hurt, but you are probably a genius and that is why.

I failed to post the instruction sheet that comes with the tensioner kit and because of my great organization, I had to buy another kit since I could not find the one I originally bought. While preparing to move I found the original kit and not sure if I put it with my long term storage or shipped with my parts in my household goods to Japan. If I come across it I will try to coodinate with Carter to have the housing duplicated, if not it will be 5 years before see it again. The instructions do indicate how critical it is to set the hole in the proper location but I can't even remember those details right now. I think I have a scan of the instructions on my computer and will send them to you if so since I could not figure out how to post the PDF file at the time other than individual page scans with another format.

I'm glad to see Darryl's post as to how these upgraded housings really help since I was not able to really notice in my situation. They were kind of expensive if I remember correctly and wondered if worth the money at the time.

Package arrived yesterday and it was from Kurt White Racing. I had no idea but he sent me a complete tensioner unit, original GM! John offered and Kurt responded so it sure is great to have people like them in this madness.
Now to find the time to disect this rascal.........;)

Hans,
I have been a bit tied up as my dad is dying and I'm not doing anything but comforting him right now. I'll be back in the saddle when all is over. I have had 2 people interested in funding this project but no one has pulled the trigger yet.
Hang in there as this WILL happen in the near future.

Carter,

Went through this with my mother earlier this year. In fact, have lost 4 loved ones in the last 2 years. The only solace is that you would rather see them go than continue with their suffering.

Hi...also my 90 zr1 begin the chain rattle when start up...it has about 26k miles...i have some questions....
- if i buy the jerrys gasket housing i can use my original tensioner (old)?
- it's an easy job change the housing?
- need regulation when installed?

Thank you so much in advance

Tensioner can be reused BUT, you must follow direction that came with the new housing. A customer chose not to and ended up with a broken camshaft & bent valve.

WOW...great info...i'm not a mechanic and this info is very important...but there are regulation to do or is plug and play? There is a sheet with installation guide?
It's an easy job or must disassemble a lot of parts?

Yes, there is an installation guide directions included with the new housing. The procedure to reset the Tensioner to transport mode, is not included, but can be furnished if requested, or you can send them to Jerrys Gaskets.
Here is a link for that service. https://www.jerrysgaskets.com/secondary-cam-chain-tensioner-re-set-90-95/

Easy? Depends on your skills & knowledge of the parts relationship & comprehension of the instructions. Easy for some is hard for others.

Here is a link to the instructions which are photos 2 & 3.
